A must-attend event is back, a must for every sailing enthusiast. From this morning (06-09) until Sept. 10, Liguria in fact becomes the host of the annual International Sailing Week in Imperia , a five-day event and regatta dedicated to the great sailing classics. In short, the Vele d’Epoca in Imperia, the traditional event dedicated to classic boats that has attracted and fascinated entire legions of enthusiasts since 1986.

Protagonists of the event, from the September 6 to 10 in Imperia , will be the two major regattas of international significance: on the one hand, the Vintage Sails 2023 – reserved for vintage and classic boats, replicas, the Tall-Ship , to the Spirit of Tradition and Classic IORs ; on the other hand, the Imperia Cup 2023 , which will see the iconic Eight-Meter Tonnage International (8M-SI), an Olympic class from 1908 to 1936, compete.

Populating this 2023 edition of the Vele d’Epoca-with the first race at 11 a.m. on Sept. 7-are many participating boats, including big names a little bit in every category, such as undoubtedly French Kiss , Serenade , Corinthian and Tuiga , to name a few. There is also no shortage of some classic boats known to us, such as Crivizza e Pilgrim .

Also not to be missed, strong on its 100th birthday, will be Barbara , an elegant 18-meter yawl designed by Charles E. Nicholson in 1923, then revolutionary with its Bermudian yawl rig.

Eight Metre Tonnage International | The Participants

Parallel to the classic Imperia regatta, the Imperia Cup will also take place, with several 8M-SIs competing in Ligurian waters. Participants will also include Vision KC-3-strong holder of seven world titles and standard-bearer of the Imperia Yacht Club-and Anne Sophie , an 8M-SI designed for the never-competed 1940 Tokyo Olympics .

THE PANERAI CLASSIC YACHTS CHALLENGE

One of the world’s most imposing historic boat fleets is making ready to sail into Imperia in Northern Liguria for the 18th edition of Le Vele d’Epoca di Imperia which plays out between September 10th and 14th. Imperia is also the fifth Mediterranean stage of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, the international racing circuit for vintage and classic craft sponsored by the Florentine haute horlogerie maison for the 10th consecutive year in 2014.

Organised by the Assonautica Provinciale di Imperia under the patronage of the CIM (International Mediterranean Committee) with technical support provided by the Yacht Club Sanremo, Le Vele d’Epoca di Imperia is the largest regatta of its kind in Italy. In fact, more than 70 yachts ranging in size between seven and 85 metres and built between the late 19th century and the present day will moor in Porto Maurizio and along the floating jetties overlooking the Banchina Medaglie d’Oro for its duration. The craft will be split into “Vintage”, “Classic” and “Spirit of Tradition” categories based on their year of launch too.

The opening ceremony takes place on Wednesday, September 10th, with one race per day scheduled between Thursday morning and Sunday. Side events include photographic exhibitions, concerts and culinary challenges with “La Grande Parata” on Sunday morning being followed by the last of the four planned races and the prize-giving ceremony. Imperia is held only every second year and so always features new boats, attracted by not merely by a desire to compete but also its wonderfully friendly atmosphere and the chance to be admired by the 200,000 visitors that flock to the Ligurian town in the course of the five-day event.

The largest yacht in port will be Signora del Vento, an 85-metre schooner built in Northern Europe in 1962 and used as a naval training vessel before taking up her current career on the charter market. The smallest will be Wianno, a gaff sloop of just 7.6 metres and a replica of the 1914 American design aboard which President John F. Kennedy learned to sail.

Making her first appearance at Imperia will be the 38-metre two-masted topsail schooner, Jacob Meindert, originally built in Holland in 1953 as a steel ice-breaking tug but converted to a tall-ship in 1989. She selected Italy as her new base this year.

Also coming to Imperia for the first time is Star 1907, a gaff cutter built on the Isle of Wight. Over a century ago, in fact, she played host to the future King Edward VIII when he was attending the Royal Naval College on the island. Today she belongs to an Italian owner who had her meticulously restored and also transferred by road to Imperia from her current home on Lake Maggiore.

Another high profile attendee is Xarifa, a majestic 50-metre three-masted schooner built in England in 1927 for sewing machine magnate Franklin Morse Singer. Xarifa, whose name means “magnificent creature” in Egyptian, is also already entered for the Panerai Transat Classique 2015, which starts from the Canary Islands next January and finishes in Martinique in the Caribbean.

The other Big Boats at Imperia include three magnificent schooners: the 32-metre Altair (1931), the 55-metre Elena and the 50-metre Eleonora. They will be joined by the 1915 gaff schooner Mariette which has been competing – and winning – on the classic sailing circuits for over a decade now.

Imperia is always a big draw too for the Italian Navy which this year brings a mini-fleet of no less than eight vessels: Artica II (1956), Capricia (1963), Chaplin (1974), Corsaro II (1961) and Stella Polare (1965), flanked by Gemini, Orsa Maggiore and Sagittario.

Officine Panerai too takes part with its brand ambassador, the 1936 Bermudan ketch Eilean. The Florentine luxury sports watch maker remains the world’s leading organiser of classic yachting events with 11 different events scheduled for 2014 across the globe. Panerai has also further underscored its close links to classic sailing with the creation of the Luminor 1950 Regatta 3 Days Chrono Flyback Titanio, a chronograph designed to bring a revolutionary simplicity to calculating race start times.

The sixth and final round of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge Mediterranean Circuit is Les Régates Royales de Cannes in France between September 23rd and 27th at which the much-sought after trophies for the 2014 season will be presented.

Imperia Hosts Vintage Boats Regatta

One of the world’s largest and most impressive historic boat fleets has sailed into northern Liguria for the Imperia Vintage Yacht Challenge (Vele d’Epoca di Imperia), the largest regatta of its kind in Italy, taking place until Sunday.

More than 70 yachts ranging in size between seven and 85 meters and built between the late 19th century and today, divided into the categories of Vintage, Classic and Spirit of Tradition, can be admired during the five-day event, which is expected to attract 200,000 visitors.

One race per day is scheduled between today and Sunday. Side events include photographic exhibitions, concerts and culinary challenges. “La Grande Parata” (The Grand Parade) takes place on Sunday morning, followed by the last of the four planned races and the prize-giving ceremony.

Established in 1986, the Imperia Vintage Yacht Challenge has become an important date in the calendar of events dedicated to historic boats. It takes place every two years, alternating with the Porto Rotondo Vintage Yachts event.

The Imperia Vintage Yacht Challenge is also the fifth Mediterranean stage of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, the international racing circuit for classic and vintage saiboats.

Imperia Classic Yachts: Vele d’Epoca Regatta

Vele d’Epoca di Imperia celebrate this year its 16th edition. Over the years, the Imperia Regatta has become one of the most important competitions in European vintage sailing calendar.

From 8th to 12th September 2010 Imperia Bay will be the setting for the 16th Edition of the “Imperia Classic Yachts”, one leg of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge 2010 international circuit, an unmissable event reserved for vintage and classic sailing boats , sponsored for the first time by the Ministry of Tourism.

This is an event which attracts increasing numbers of Queens of the Sea, each with her own fascinating story. But it is the warm hospitality and the series of events organised around the regattas which has drawn all eyes along the coast to this Italian town. Visitors from all over the world are bewitched by the Riviera climate, the colours, perfumes and flavours of the Province of Imperia, and the breathtaking sight of a thousand sails silhouetted against the setting sun.

“There’s a lot of hard work on a classic boat…. no electric winches, only bent backs and arms hauling the sheets and hoisting the halyard on these masterpieces of the sea which the passion of a few have restored to their original splendour” – says Lucio Carli – President of Assonautica Provinciale di Imperia which has been the organiser of the event from the very outset.

The new face of PORTO MAURIZIO  means a more elegant setting for IMPERIA CLASSIC YACHTS: and improved facilities for participating boats which must have been built prior to 1950, the classic yachts built between 1950 and 1975 and their replicas recognised under C.I.M. regulations 2010-2013. Modern sailboats can also take part in the special “Spirit of Tradition” section if the design or construction materials are in the traditional style. Among these are the “classics” and the metric classes which include the 12 metre (International Rule), which have been the protagonists of the America’s Cup classic challenges. 2008 saw a new section with the invitation to craft in the historic “J Class” which will take part alongside the other well-loved sections. The “J Class” made history in the America’s Cup in the  30s thanks to characters like Lipton, Sopwith and Vanderbilt. Since 2006 the Panerai – Imperia Classic Yachts event has been part of the “PANERAI

CLASSIC YACHTS CHALLENGE” which touches on some of the historic ports on the Mediterranean (Antibes, Cannes and Mahon) as well as overseas ones like Antigua, Nantucket and Newport. Every two years, Imperia is also part of the Circuit and plays an increasingly important role. Craft are divided into categories and challenge one another in exciting regattas.

The circuit, organised by A.I.V.E. (Associazione Italiana Vele d’epoca =Italian Classic Yachts Association) and C.I.M. (Comité International de la Méditerranée =International Mediterranean Committee) is divided into four regattas, plus some high seas races. At the end of the various trials, the Challenge winners will be declared in each class and category.

FRATELLI CARLI, AGNESI, has long been a byword for Mediterranean cooking and Imperia, together with FONDAZIONE BANCA CARIGE, PORTO DI IMPERIA SPA  and IMPERIA YACHT SRL, are present at this edition alongside the TITLE SPONSOR OFFICINE PANERAI and, together, have contributed much to a deeper understanding of the seagoing tradition. The Imperia Classic Yachts event will also see the Italian debut of EILEAN, the 22 metre ketch from Bermuda, designed and built in 1936 in the legendary Scottish Fife boatyards, recently restored to her original glory in the wake of conservative philological restoration which took over three years to complete. Officine Panerai, the Florentine luxury watchmakers and sponsor of the Classic Yachts Challenge was behind the purchase and restoration of this historic craft. In order to celebrate the return to the regattas of this Queen of the Sea, there will be a real feast for all lovers of classic yachts, an exhibition along the quays recounting the story of the painstaking salvage and rebuilding which brought Eilean back to life, using original parts and historical photos of the boat.

Since the first edition, the Classic Yachts has been organised by the Imperia Sailing Association,  Assonautica Provinciale di Imperia, with a contribution from the Imperia Chamber of Commerce, under the sponsorship of the Liguria Region, the Province of Imperia, and the municipal authority and Prefecture of Imperia, with the administrative and logistical cooperation of the Harbour Office. The organisation and logistics of this event, one of the major ones in the Mediterranean, is possible thanks to the help of Yacht Club Imperia, Yacht Club San Marino,  Yacht  Club Marina degli Aregai, Club del Mare Diano Marina, Circolo Nautico Arma and Club Nautico San Bartolomeo al Mare. The main area where the even will take place is in Calata Anselmi, the dock of Porto Maurizio but the entire city of Imperia is in a festive mood.

AIVE, Associazione Italiana Vele d’Epoca (the Italian Classic Yacht Association), presents their official regatta calendar for 2021. After the cancellation of almost all events scheduled for 2020 due to Covid concerns, 17 events are scheduled for this year, between April and October, in both the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic Seas. Many other events will be held in France, Spain, Montecarlo, Corsica and Greece. The four Italian national trophies up this year will be awarded in October. The 2021 calendar is subject to modifications based on the evolution of the worldwide health emergency.

From April to October: Seven Months of Classic Yacht Racing AIVE is proud to present the official 2021 regatta calendar. Chaired by Pier Maria Giusteschi Conti, the Italian Classic Yacht Association is a member of CIM (International Mediterranean Committee), the organization in charge of issuing and supervising the rules that govern classic yacht racing since 1926. The AIVE calendar includes 17 events, all valid for the four annual trophies at stake: the AIVE Tyrrhenian Cup, the AIVE Adriatic Cup, the Artiglio Trophy, and the Olin Stephens II Centennial Cup, provided by the Sparkman & Stephens Association for participating yachts with a valid CIM rating certificate designed by the legendary American naval architect. Though not valid for the AIVE trophies, there will also be many other independently organized meets and regattas in France, Spain, Montecarlo, Corsica and Greece, for a total of more than 35 events across the Mediterranean dedicated to vintage yachting. Participants in the AIVE events will be divided into three categories: Vintage for yachts launched before 1950, Classic for yachts launched between 1950 and 1975, and Spirit of Tradition for modern yachts with traditional lines. Several hundred historic yachts are expected to participate in this season’s events.

Tyrrhenian regattas After the season’s first three events (the Settimana Velica Internazionale Accademia Navale e Città di Livorno, the Trofeo Ammiraglio G. Francese in Viareggio and the Regata dei Tre Golfi in Naples), where the classic yachts will race in their own category, the gradual descent of the Tyhrrenian begins on June 5th with the third edition of the Vele d’Epoca nel Golfo in La Spezia. Later in June and then July we have the Regata della Capraia, the Argentario Sailing Week in Porto Santo Stefano, the Grandi Vele in Gaeta and Le Vele d’Epoca in Naples. After the August pause, the second half of the season opens with the Vele d’Epoca di Imperia (from the 2nd to the 5th of September), the historic event first run in 1986, followed by the Trofeo Mariperman, organized by the Italian Navy later in September, and finally the Vele Storiche di Viareggio in October to conclude the season and award the year’s trophies.

Adriatic regattas Five events, running between June and October 2021, make up the circuit valid for the AIVE Adriatic Cup. Two events will be held in June: the Portopiccolo Classic in Sistiana (near Trieste) and the Trofeo Principato di Monaco in Venice. In September we have the International Hannibal Classic (the only race that actually ran in 2020) in Monfalcone. The season will close with the October events, the Trofeo Città di Trieste and the Barcolana Classic. These regattas see many yachts typical of the Adriatic Sea participating, like the famous Passere and many designs from the board of a master of classic yacht design, Carlo Sciarrelli.

The regatta della Capraia: Multiple starting ports and floating museums The Regata della Capraia is a new race with a new format. Starting on Friday, June 11th, participants cast off to sail to the island of Capraia, but from any of three different ports – Leghorn, Viareggio or La Spezia. In Capraia they will have exclusive use of a part of the marina, and, weather permitting, on Saturday the 12th will race either around the island or around the buoys. At the docks, the yachts may be toured by the public according to the formula “Benvenuti a bordo”. On Sunday the 13th participants will sail back to their home ports. The Notice of Race with further details will be published in the next few days by the race organizer, the Associazione Vele Storiche Viareggio.

Can I actively join the sailing aboard yacht Hallowe'en?

Yes, of course! On the first day, the experienced crew of Hallowe’en will introduce you to all safety measurements and handlings, as well as guide you throughout the whole regatta event. Take the chance to be part of the winning team and show your knowledge! Should you, on the other hand, prefer to just enjoy the thrill of the race and the salty breeze on your skin without actively joining the sailing, then the decision is all yours at any time.

How many days of sailing are there during the regattas?

This depends on the event. Most events offer anything between 3 – 6 days of sailing action. Certain regattas, like the Bailli de Suffren , also span a considerably extended duration. With a 1-day sailing training before the start of the regatta, you can call yourself a true sailor after crossing the finishing line on the last day. Please note that attending the regatta races is at no time obligatory. If you ever feel like skipping a day of sailing, the choice is yours at any time. We have plenty of activities for you to choose from to make your stay as perfect as possible.

Is it possible to only attend single days during the regatta?

Certainly. If, for any reason, you are not able to attend the whole regatta, you can always choose to attend only one or several days of your choice. Please note that availability for single-day participants is limited, so we encourage you to secure your spot as soon as possible.

What is the history of classic yacht Hallowe'en?

In 1926, William Fife III launched the 24.7m cutter Hallowe’en . According to William Fife III, designer of a number of classic yachts still racing today, “ Hallowe’en is the perfect gentleman’s yacht. She is a jewel”. When gaff-rigged racers dominated various regattas, he chose to rig the yacht as a low-aspect Bermudan cutter. Her mast and boom heights continued to change over the years, and eventually, she was transformed into a yawl.

Under new owner Alfred Larsen, a Norwegian industrialist, she returned to the Atlantic after racing in the Mediterranean for several years. The yacht became the official yacht of the Royal Norwegian Racing Club and was helmed by Prince Olaf numerous times. Following her transatlantic journey in 1938, she vanished from radar screens. She was further renamed Cotton Blosson IV by Walter Wheeler and continued her history of ocean racing before eventually being donated to the Classic Boat Museum in New Port, Rhode Island, for a much-needed refit.As a result of funds drying up in New Port, Hallowe’en was in need of a new owner and returned to the Mediterranean when Elizabeth Meyer (owner of J-Class Endeavour) assisted in finding a buyer.

From 1988 to 1991, Hallowe’en was carefully restored to her original lines at the Classic Boat Works in Newport, Rhode Island. All sawn English Oak frames were carefully repaired or replaced, and the planking was secured with bronze fasteners from the museum. Having undergone some major changes in France in 1994, she underwent another transformation in 1998, perhaps looking better now than ever. Greqt location”

The location is great.it is in 55.th floor of one of Moscow city towers.the city view is great if ypu are lucky to have the correct room.because some rooms have no view at all.

Don't expect a smile or politeness of western standards from anyone in the hotel! Excellent view from the suites. Cool with a tub in the room! Breakfast buffet is not included despite the price! But it is sent as roomservice for an acceptable price. Fresh orange juice is recommended. All channels except CNN is in russian, nice LED-flatscree s though. It promises l'occitane make up in luxury suites but they are not there. It only provides basic shampo, showergel and toothbrush. Rooms were cold in december but they have heaters. Two bottles of free water and tea is provided. I expected more of the hotel, especially a smile for €200/night but all in all I think it was a good stay.

Not impressed”

Been here on a business trip and immediately from the hall you can see that this is not a business hotel... Let's say it's more of a concept hotel, on the 55th floor of a huge skyscraper, rooms tiled with golden mosaics, statues and mirrors on the ceiling... Opulent Russia. Anyhow the room was missing napkins, small towels, the change of towels left a bit to be desired (they changed the shower foot mat but not the towels one day). Fridge is noisy as traffic at midday. Staff was really nice and this is a positive, but for the price I paid for the room I cannot give a good review as much was missing.

I'm totally disappointed with the hotel; there were numerous things which forced me to write this overview: - not all receptionists speak English - waiting for around 40 minutes for breakfast (it's served in the room); by the way it's very simple - rotten salad leaves for breakfast - worn out bathroom mat with big holes - dirty napkin for breakfast - worn out shower curtain - lack of TV channels; needed to ask technician for help - but the worst was the noise in the room which could not be switched off; it was impossible to sleep; tried till 1:30 am and asked for a new room for all the above I paid 200 EUR/night Only the view is spectacular. There was other hotel available close to our office so I needed to book this one. It was my first and for sure last stay there. Made few photos to prove my words but impossible to publish here.
