Both the town and the marina of Porto di Tropea offer good shopping facilities for your yacht charter. The marina offers the usual services including a Despar market, pharmacy, hairdresser, shops, bars and restaurants and even has a swimming pool despite being surrounded by beaches. You can also stroll along the harbour promenade with its many small shops and restaurants and climb the stairs to the old town, which has a beautiful historic centre. 

Getting to your yacht charter 

The nearest airport is Lamezia Terme (SUF). It is about 57 kilometres away and is served by almost all major airlines during the season (Ryanair, Easyjet, Eurowings, Condor, ITA, Wizzair, Swiss, Trasavia, Lufthansa...). 

A transfer is offered. The larger train station Vibo Pizzo is about 30 km away, the train station Tropea is about 3 kilometres from the port. For those arriving by car, video-monitored parking is available in the marina.

When it comes to boat hire or yacht charter in Tropea you typically have two choices - bareboat yacht hire or skippered yacht charter.

When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases skippers will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a skipper as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.

Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can skipper these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In Tropea

If you are on a gulet or skippered yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of Tropea. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Tropea, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

But the city is best known for the Rocca di Cefalù. This 270 m high limestone rock lies directly on the beach and protects the bay.

Can you rent a yacht in Tropea – do I need a license?

Small boats (under a certain horsepower or length), electric boats, crewed yacht charters and gulet charters may not require a license. Larger boats or those with more powerful engines need a skipper’s license. Before you confirm your sailing trip to Tropea, please send us a copy and we will check it for you. You need to have the original copies on board, so don’t forget to take them. To sail in Italy , one of the following qualifications is necessary : • ICC (International Certificate of Competence), International, with valid Navigational and VHF licenses, Prerequisites: RYA “Day Skipper Course” or complete the ICC Assessment form to prove competence from previous experience.• IPC (International Proficiency Certificate), America, Prerequisites: ASA 104 or US Sailing “Bareboat Cruising Course” OR: • NauticEd SLC (International Sailing License and Credentials), International, • UK – RYA Day Skipper practical, • USA – US Sailing “Bareboat Cruising Course”, ASA “104 Bareboat Cruising Course” or above, • Germany – “Sportbootführerschein See“ or above, • Belgium – Algemeen Stuurbrevet/ Brevet de conduite général, • France – LE PERMIS PLAISANCE If you do not have a skipper license, it is also possible to rent a boat with a skipper

Tropea & the Aeolian Islands

Named after Aeolus, God of the Winds, the Aeolian Islands are a Volcanic Group of Islands located West of Tropea and North of Sicily. They are also known as the Lipari Islands and locally as the Isole Eolie. The Main Islands of the Archipelago are: Lipari, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi, Stomboli, Panarea and Vulcano.

The Islands are very beautiful with Great Beaches, Castles, Thermal Resorts, Good Fishing and some Volcanic Activity on Stomboli, with some fairly frequent eruptions. Salina is famous for the 1990’s film about the Legendary Poet Pablo Neruda, Il Postino. Panarea is the Party Island with some fine Boutique’s and the Jet-Set.

Filicudi and Alicudi have some great fishing and remote Beaches and very clear waters for Snorkeling and Diving. The Island of Vulcano has an open-air pool of volcanic mud and Thermal Baths. It’s a Huge Attraction for bathers looking for some Skin Treatment and to soothe some Aches and Pains.

Lipari is perhaps the most interesting with Great Beaches, Archaeological remains, a Beautiful Town, excellent Seafood Restaurants, Museums, Shops, Galleries and the Ancient Citadel or Castello di Lipari. The Aeolian Archipelago is a UNESCO heritage site due to its Geology and Vulcanology.

Tropea is a municipality located within the province of Vibo Valentia, in Calabria. The town is a famous bathing place, situated on a reef, in the gulf of St. Euphemia. The town of Tropea has almost completely preserved its XVIth century planning and is both historically and architecturally fascinating. Es gibt es auch einen anderen Flughafen in Reggio Calabria, allerdings ist dieser 120 km von Tropea entfernt und deswegen nicht unbedingt zu empfehlen.

Luxury Yacht: Luxury yacht charters are available for either a sailing yacht (sailboat), catamaran or motorboat and will have a crew and host/hostess on hand to cater for whatever your needs are along with a skipper who will have a detailed knowledge of your cruising area. The global megarich are paying up to $2 million a week for superyacht rentals but smaller boat charters are down

Sales of luxury yachts may be down but the world’s megarich have found another, more instantaneous way to get their high seas kicks — chartering a swanky boat instead.

Total chartered days for yachts longer than 50 meters has increased since 2020, according to  IYC , a global firm specializing in the sale and charters of luxury yachts. Vessels between 60 to 70 meters posted the most growth last year, at 10%, whereas shorter yachts aren’t nearly as popular as before.

IYC Chief Executive Officer  Raphael Sauleau  said he’s seeing more customers willing to pay a higher premium for the ultimate ocean experience. Clients are willing to pay more for a so-called advanced provisioning allowance, which covers on-board expenses like food and service, of up to 40% compared to the standard 30% of the total charter fee, he said.

New customers are coming to yachting “with an appetite for larger yachts,” Sauleau said. Compared with smaller vessels, these floating villas come with more privacy, better facilities and a larger crew. A bigger range of large models that’s become available over the past three years has also contributed to higher bookings, he added.

Fraser Yachts , a major international broker, is experiencing a similar phenomenon, receiving 7% more charter bookings for yachts over 60 meters in 2023 versus prior years. Across yachts of all sizes however, the number of charter days reported last year was 19% down on 2021.

It’s a quirk that would seem to chime with the trend of super luxury brands defying a broader luxury slowdown. Hermes International SCA, for example, saw Chinese buyers  snap up its products . Hermes typically caters to the most affluent customers, making it more resilient in a challenging luxury goods market.

At the same time, sales of floating palaces are waning, the Superyacht Times said in a  report  in March. Sales of superyachts, generally defined as boats longer than 30 meters, contracted 20% in 2023 from 2022 and are well down on 2021, when many rich people splurged on boats to travel in a safe and exclusive way.

Stacy Fischer-Rosenthal , the president of luxury travel and lifestyle consultancy Fischer Travel Enterprises, said she’s expecting to help clients charter at least 10 yachts this year. Most of the interest is around megayachts — or yachts above 60 meters — and prices range from about $700,000 to $2 million a week, she said.

Wealthy people may be shying away from outright purchases due to geopolitical worries and global conflicts.

Fear of more widespread fighting in the Middle East and Russian’s war in Ukraine “seem to make some buyers nervous, particularly those in the market for very large new builds,” the Superyacht Times said.
