AIR Enquiry

“The way we design, is we design fully custom, fully unique yachts, we start with a blank piece of paper and we start asking the client how they use the boat, what they want to do on board, what kind of experience they have but we also want input on what kind of styling they like... It’s about getting to learn about the owner and how they want to use the boat.” - Ronno Schouten, Design Manager of De Voogt Naval Architects

AIR yacht interior

The AIR yacht was interiorly designed by the famous Remi Tessier , who started his design career training as a cabinetmaker for over seven years.

Now, he has transitioned and applied all his learnings in yacht designing and has been the one responsible for some incredible yachts.

One of these yachts is the Squall yacht; a 53-meter yacht delivered back in 2002; She can comfortably travel at cruising speeds of 10 knots and go up to 14 knots.

Another of these yachts is the PARSIFAL II, a charter yacht that can readily welcome up to 10 guests at a time and can be attended to by six qualified crew members.

air yacht

Designed for entertainment, the AIR yacht lacks nothing in the amenities department. She has a full-blown gym, a swimming pool, a beauty room, an elevator, an impressive movie theatre, a jacuzzi, a spa room, and a commercial helipad.

She also has full air-conditioning and internet connection throughout the yacht.

Adding to this, she has access to tons of toys on board. Guests can choose from a plethora of activities they can do, such as riding in one of their jet skis, kayaks, scuba diving equipment, water skis, wave runners, and even inflatable water toys.

AirYacht reveals radical 52m airship-yacht crossover concept

Flying yachts, once the stuff of our wildest, most outlandish dreams, are slowly inching closer to a reality. As the industry prepares for the 2022 Superyacht Design Festival , BOAT catches up with  Guillaume Hoddé, co-founder of AirYacht, and Franck Darnet, the yacht's designer, to learn more about an exciting concept that's set to take to the skies in 2026...

Swiss company AirYacht has unveiled a radical new concept that marries the flying power of an airship with the luxury amenities of a superyacht.

Capable of flying between 100 to 3,000 metres above the ground with an autonomous cruising time of around one week, the AirYacht's groundbreaking design is composed of two separate modules: a 200-metre helium-filled airship attached to an ultra-lightweight all-carbon 52-metre superyacht residence.

The three-storey residence can be landed in its entirety or it can deploy a 12-person elevator to allow guests to disembark for a quick stopover.

Each module has its own complement of crew - the airship will have a crew of three and the residence will have a crew of 12.

The AirYacht is the brainchild of Guillaume Hoddé and Matthieu Ozanne, who founded the company in 2017 and enlisted the design expertise of Franck Darnet , who most recently worked on the exteriors of 63.8 metre Atomic . Born in Nantes and immersed in the world of Vendée Globe racing boats, Darnet has a masterful knowledge of "weight performance" technology that makes him uniquely suited to the challenges of airborne yachts.

The residence will have the same layout as a superyacht, with three decks, 750 square metres of indoor space and amenities including a gym, sauna, swimming pool and touch and go helipad.

Accommodation is provided for between ten and 12 guests in a five or six-cabin layout. Terraces, which can be used while the AirYacht is both underway and stationary, flank the starboard and port sides and there is an additional 120 square metre terrace-style lounge on the aft.

Aerodynamic shape and low weight are crucial to the design of the AirYacht. In order to keep the vessel as lightweight as possible, the residence component won’t be fitted with engines.

This creates additional space and increased flexibility to tailor the interior layout, while also allowing the residence to be built at AirYachts’ own facility without the need for a shoreside shipyard. When the residence is detached and on water, it will be towed by its tenders.

The AirYacht aims to give passengers the freedom to roam anywhere in the world, from lakes and seas to deserts and mountains. “On a normal superyacht you have to stay at sea. You can’t cross a hill or a mountain,” said Franck Darnet. “Most of the beautiful things that you see on our planet - some of them are next to the shore [...] but a lot of them are inland.”

In order to conceptualise the residence, Darnet had to rethink various different aspects of design. To this end, the crew quarters are in the forward upper part of the residence - in the section that ‘plugs’ into the airship - in order to give the crew to access the airship module.

The AirYacht also features large sections of glazing in the hull that allows passengers to look down, “because the most spectacular things that exist when you are flying are on the floor,” said Darnet.

While the AirYacht will be able to fly at dizzying heights of around 3,000 metres, the vessel is designed to cruise at heights of between 100 and 200 metres to allow for crystal-clear views of the world unfolding below.

The AirYacht will require ‘early adopters’ for it to take off - both literally and figuratively. “This isn’t a new ship, or a new yacht or new plane. This is a completely new thing,” said Guillaume Hoddé, co-founder of AirYacht. ‘New concept, new design. It’s like a dream.”

Currently, the AirYacht is powered by hybrid technology. “In ten years, we hope to have a full hydrogen version,” added Hoddé.

The first AirYacht will be able to achieve top speeds of 50 knots and the first unit is due for completion in 2026.

Guillaume Hoddé will be attending the 2022 Superyacht Design Festival to shed more light on the AirYacht and discuss the future of flying-focused yacht designs. The event will be held in Milan from 22-24 June. Tickets are still available to purchase .

The Stunning New ‘Air Yacht’ Is a Catamaran That Floats to the Skies

The Air Yacht

Lazzarini Design Studio

Lazzarini Design Studio released its latest effort, the Air Yacht, a floating catamaran lifted by two helium-filled blimps that sit in place of a traditional twin hull, a report from New Atlas explains.

Pierpaolo Lazzarini is known for extravagant designs such as the swan-inspired Avanguardia and his hollowed-out superyacht ‘the Shape’ design.

The Air Yacht is a new addition to Lazzarini’s series of unusual, luxurious designs. The floating catamaran is lifted by two 492 feet long (150 meters) airships connected to either side of a 262 feet long (80 meters) central hull.

yacht air

The central hull is 33 feet (10 meters) wide and allows for panoramic 360-degree views of the skies and ground below. A master cabin, dining area, and living area are located in the central hull, while the two airships each host five ensuite guest rooms with large windows, allowing for a total of 22 passengers.

A sustainable hybrid airship-superyacht

The twin airships are separated into hives that store up to 14.1 million cubic feet (400,000 cubic meters) of compressed helium gas. This allows the Air Yacht to fly at a leisurely pace of 60 knots (69 mph/111 kph) for slightly more than 48 hours before it needs to be refueled. When it’s sailing on the water, the Air Yacht moves at a speed of five knots (6 mph, 9 km/h). On top of the central hull is a helipad, presumably for passengers that have to get where they want to go a little quicker than 60 knots.

yacht air

The tops of the two airships are fitted with solar panels that help to add power to the hybrid craft’s ultra-light batteries fueling the ship’s electric rotors. The impressive design is pitched as a sustainable form of luxury travel that doubles up as a superyacht and an airship.

RECOMMENDED ARTICLES

Last month, another company,  California-based startup H2 Clipper, revealed a more utilitarian approach to reviving the blimp. The company  announced its plans to develop hydrogen airships that could provide zero-emission cargo transportation at a quarter of the cost of traditional air cargo. The company has a lot of hurdles to overcome before its concept can take flight, such as changing the long-held negative public perception of airships held ever since the Hindenburg disaster .

We might never see the Air Yacht concept become a reality, but we can already imagine it forming part of a dramatic set-piece in a future James Bond movie.

The Engines that Power Superyachts

The sight of a majestic superyacht is absolutely fascinating, but only few people actually know the different engine types that power these massive vessels.

The size of a yacht and its weight, which is given in gross tons, have considerable influence on the type of engine it will come with.

For that reason, the majority of superyachts usually do not only have one engine but actually several in most cases.

This post lists the most popular engines used in both smaller boats as well as some of the largest privately owned yachts in the world.

MTU engines

The manufacturer MTU is probably the most popular engine brand in the yachting industry, and their products can be found in vessels from all over the world.

Founded in 1909, MTU first produced engines for airships, most famously blimps, before specializing in the marine industry.

Today the engine manufacturer is also well known for its power train and locomotive, armored vehicle, haul truck engines as well as, of course, yachts.

Not only does MTU offer the best equipment for series and performance yachts, but also customized and specially manufactured engines for superyachts.

The world-renowned company advertises exceptional and powerful engines that are particularly quiet and low-vibration for maximum comfort and the best possible operating conditions.

For yachts, the MTU engine series 2000, 4000, 1163, and 8000 are the most common models and can reach a performance between 400 and 10000 KW or even 500 to 13400 HP.

The 162.5 meters (533 ft) ECLIPSE , currently the third largest yacht in the world, is equipped with not just one but four MTU 20V 1163 TB93 diesel engines allowing the giant vessel to reach top speeds of 25 knots.

Caterpillar engines

The international brand Caterpillar is widely known for its mining vehicles, including excavators and trucks and is one of the leading manufacturers of high-quality and powerful industrial engines.

However, Caterpillar also manufactures different engines for the yacht industry and has become a top choice for mid-sized and large superyachts.

The yacht manufacturers Pride Mega Yachts, and Tourquise Yachts are known to put great trust in the engines of Caterpillar, choosing them time and time again for their most high-profile projects.

These include, for example, the ESTATEMENT with its 115 meters (377 feet) and the 77-meter (253 feet) GO, both of which are powered by Caterpillar engines.

Caterpillar offers a wide variety of yacht engines such as the series C12, C18, C32, 3512C as well as VM32C with a performance range between 500 to 8000 KW and 660 to 11000 HP.

At the moment Caterpillar manufactures 18 different models of the series mentioned above that are suitable for exclusive yachts, speedboats, and fishing vessels.

MAN engines

MAN SE is a well-known machine manufacturer from Germany, established in 1758 and recently merged to form Traton SE. T

he company has made a name for itself in truck and bus manufacturing and produces different types of engines and machines.

MAN’s most famous project in the boating industry was in 1987 when they supplied a total of nine four-stroke diesel engines for the cruise ship Queen Elizabeth II, which at that time was considered the largest engine for a vessel carrying passengers.

On the water, MAN offers 12 different engines for yachts as well as fishing boats. Their popular i6 series has three different engines which have an output from 537 to 625 KW, which corresponds to 730 to 850 HP.

The V8 series also has three engines which range between 735 and 956 KW (1000 to 1300 HP).

The most powerful yacht engine series by MAN is the V12 model. With an output range of 1029 up to 1471 KW, these powerful engines provide 1400 to 2000 HP per engine.

SEMT Pielstick

The 147-meter (482 ft.) PRINCE ABDULAZIZ is one of the largest yachts in the world, relying on Pielstick engines.

She is powered by two 5,816 kW Pielstick diesel generator sets that produce an astonishing cruising speed of 18 knots, which is considerable for her size.

Since 2006, SEMT Pielstick, which originally mainly produced engines for locomotives, power plants, and naval and merchant’s vessels, has actually been part of MAN, although the brand SEMT remains.

Pielstick was originally based in France, and in addition to producing engines for superyachts, the company built power plants and locomotive engines.

Wärtsilä engines

While companies like MAN or Caterpillar have become household names, Wärtsilä is a somewhat lesser-known engine manufacturer in the yachting industry.

The Finnish brand was founded in 1834 and has worked on very large projects like the 82-meter ALFA NERO, the 106-meter BLACK PEARL, and the 84-meter SAVANNAH.

Wärtsilä is therefore not to be underestimated, and their experience in the energy sector makes their engines extremely efficient and highly innovative.

In addition to traditional diesel and gas engines, Wärtsilä also manufactures propellers, marine control systems, and water management solutions.

The majority of their projects are, however, industrial, although it is expected that Wärtsilä will most likely work on more superyachts in the future, given their innovative approaches.

The World's First Hydrogen-Powered Superyacht Has a $644 Million Price Tag

how are mega yachts powered

By Nick Mafi

exterior of a yacht

Superyachts seemed to be among the last modes of (luxe) transportation to bend toward the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly engine designs. But if news from last week’s Monaco Yacht Show served as a bellwether, the industry meant to cater to the wealthiest among us made a progressive splash with the unveiling of Aqua, the world's first hydrogen-powered superyacht.

Designed by the Dutch firm Sinot Yacht & Architecture Design, Aqua is a nearly 400-foot-long vessel that's run entirely by a renewable energy source. "Water is the eternal fuel of life, the life-sustaining force that makes planet Earth habitable," says Sander Sinot, founder of the firm that bears his name. "Water is soft, yet at the same time it cuts through hard rocks." It was this appreciation of water that helped the firm find balance between the natural world and the technological. The propulsion system is made up of two 28-ton vacuumed tanks that each contain liquified hydrogen which are stored at -423 degrees Fahrenheit. Along with being eco-friendly, hydrogen-based energy means for a quieter experience aboard the ship in comparison to traditional engines. That said, there will be backup diesel generators handy should the captain ever need them.

swimming pool on yacht

There was much confusion on Monday if there was already a buyer who had paid the hefty $644 million price tag. Reports spread throughout the internet that billionaire Bill Gates had purchased the superyacht, rumors that proved to be false. Yet readers couldn't be blamed for believing such reports, as images show Aqua to include its own infinity pool, helipad, spa, and gym—amenities meant to attract billionaires such as Gates.

An aerial view of the superyacht shows how close passengers can get to the water, as well as the cascading design of the infinity pool.

Sinot and his team designed the vessel to safely bring passengers as close to the water as possible. "Water is relaxation; it makes us calmer and more creative," Sinot comments. "We wanted to provide those on board with the closest possible proximity to the water. The aft deck features an innovative series of platforms cascading down towards the sea, while a large swim platform allows all passengers to enjoy the optimal experience of accessing the water at sea level."

Aqua can reach speeds of up to 19.5 mph and features enough room for 14 guests and 31 crew members. The firm plans to complete the vessel by 2024.

Inside AQUA: The 112m hydrogen-powered superyacht concept which emits only water

By Katia Damborsky   10 February 2020

Computer-generated images give us a look inside the 112m/ 372ft superyacht AQUA , an eco-friendly concept developed by Sinot Yacht Architecture that is powered by liquid hydrogen and emits only water.

Breaking new ground in form and function, AQUA is a yacht concept that’s at the cutting-edge of what is possible in superyacht design and engineering today.

The yacht concept was presented at the 2019 Monaco Yacht Show by Sinot, the esteemed Dutch design studio. They have collaborated with Lateral Naval Architects for the yacht’s naval architecture.

how are mega yachts powered

AQUA will be powered by liquid hydrogen stored in two on-board tanks at -423F, meaning the yacht’s only emission is water. This innovative technology nods to her namesake.

She comes with an incredible selection of amenities, including a waterfall pool and fully-equipped spa.

Speaking about the concept, designer Sander Sinot said: “For the development of Aqua we took inspiration from the lifestyle of a discerning, forward-looking owner, the fluid versatility of water and cutting-edge technology to combine this in a 112-metre superyacht with truly innovative features.

“Our challenge was to implement fully operational liquid hydrogen and fuel cells in a true superyacht that is not only groundbreaking in technology, but also in design and aesthetics."

Alfresco areas

According to Sinot, AQUA has been designed to provide her guests with a constant connection to the ocean.

Renderings show an exterior inspired by the ocean, with sweeping lines and a futuristic profile that looks similar to a spaceship. Large portions of glass and bubble-hood wheelhouse add to the contemporary look.

The yacht’s alfresco areas are centred around the aft decks, which have been designed to provide maximum volume and space. The main deck aft is dominated by a huge pool flanked by steps, with a cascading water feature that offers a show-stopping entrance to anyone stepping on board.

A variety of seating options are scattered across the deck, before the space merges seamlessly with the yacht’s main salon via sliding, floor-to-ceiling glass doors. This creates a versatile winter garden that allows the deck to be enjoyed by the entire party.

The circular seating area also allows the space to function as a home cinema.

Open space continues on the upper deck aft, where guests will find more seating arranged around fire pits. Formal dining can be found forward, in an open setting that offers panoramic views over the surroundings. This deck can offer privacy or open entertainment space dependent on the needs of the guests, thanks to Japanese shoji grid screens.

Accommodation

how are mega yachts powered

Accommodation is provided for a total of 12 guests in seven cabins.

Occupying the forward area of the upper deck, the vast owner’s deck is a vast, interlinked space divided by finely crafted wooden screens that allow for complete privacy. On the starboard and port sides, floor-to-ceiling windows offer incredible views and influxes of light.

how are mega yachts powered

The ceiling in the owner’s deck varies between 280cm to 380cm, with the tallest point at the central skylight. A wooden structure extends from the skylight, with a raised platform at the base that creates a stage or display area.

The en suite facilities in the owner’s apartment are one of the focal points on board. High gloss black marble floors complement the incredible panoramic views, with a freestanding geometric tub in the centre.

His and hers vanities, basins and crescent-shaped mirrors flank the space. Large walk-in wardrobes and an office area add a level of convenience.

The remaining cabins are similarly styled, with Japanese themes, wide windows and individual en suite bathrooms. Textured silk carpets, wooden furniture and mixed textures on the walls and ceilings contribute to the holistic ambience.

Central Staircase

how are mega yachts powered

Situated at AQUA’s core, the spectacular circular staircase winds down from the top deck to the lower deck, floating around a  cylindrical void.

A skylight is located at the top, and an art piece can be found at the base, which mirrors the skylight and reflects an ocean theme. On the lowest level, a panel of glass allows guests to see the two liquified hydrogen tanks which power the yacht.

how are mega yachts powered

The staircase itself features a finely crafted wooden balustrade that seems to defy gravity and catches the light created by the wave structure of the artwork. Backlit glass inserts in the steps accentuate the motif of flowing water, trickling down from the bridge deck.

Spa and Gym Area

how are mega yachts powered

Accessed via a circular tunnel, the health and wellness centre boasts an exclusive hydrotherapy suite and a water-level gym. The gym area opens out, giving guests the feeling of working out while being connected to the water.

There is a yoga space and workout floor, with plenty of the latest exercise equipment to ensure guests can keep up their fitness regimes.

The Aqua Room

how are mega yachts powered

Situated at the very bow of the yacht, the AQUA room adjoins the owner’s apartment and offers an incredible observatory area with some of the best views on board. It can remain the owner’s secret, or be enjoyed by the entire party.

While underway, guests will love getting comfortable and enjoy the feeling of being totally at one with the ocean thanks to full-height windows that eliminate the borders between the outside and the inside. A stainless steel structural support adds a polished finish to the room.

how are mega yachts powered

The yacht’s interiors are a fine balance of elegance and understated, with an overarching contemporary theme. There is a large main salon with sumptuous sofa seating, a stone-paneled wall and bronze-finished sculptures.

The skylounge is primed for daytime relaxing, with huge expanses of glass and recessed seating.

how are mega yachts powered

How does the hydrogen technology work?

The hydrogen is pumped through a special type of fuel cell which converts it into electricity while emitting only water which can be safely pumped into the ocean.

Despite its novel fuel source, the vessel is able to reach 17 knots and travel 3,750 miles before it needs to refuel, enough to cover an Atlantic crossing from New York to Southampton.

how are mega yachts powered

What’s the price of AQUA?

The yacht is reported to cost around $645 million.

Media reports stated the yacht was being built by Feadship and had been purchased by Bill Gates. These claims have been denied by Sinot. The Dutch designers have said that any links between Aqua and Mr. Gates are "factually incorrect."

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Mega-Yachts (and Their Owners)

Question number one: do they need more friends.

how are mega yachts powered

Yacht-setters, i.e. the maritime equivalent to jet-setters, circle the globe on mega yachts, the price tags of which can easily equal the yearly-budgets for a small nation. But don’t think it’s easy being rich — these gazillionairs have their yachting woes . The Biggie: when their mega yacht breaks down in a foreign port.

I asked Sean Blue, Head of Global Watercraft for AIG Private Client Group (which represents the owners of more that 300 80-foot-plus super yachts worldwide), to tell me about mega yachts and their owners .

Who are the owners of super yachts? I can’t divulge our clients, but I can share that mega yacht owners include CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, captains of industry, entertainers, engineers, inventors, rulers, owners of manufacturing companies, billionaires, and generally people who are leaders in their fields. Mega yachts are generally defined as yachts greater than 100 feet or longer, all the way up to the current largest yacht in the world — AZZAM, which is 180.6 meters long (594 feet).

Tell me about the distances these yachts can navigate. This depends on the specifications of the yacht and what it was designed for . Some are not designed to travel long distances and instead are built for speed, or for local cruising, or with maybe enough range to make a trans-Atlantic crossing safely. But others are built with an incredible amount of range in mind and can travel some 8,000 nautical miles without refueling, while others are designed to explore arctic regions, or both. Circumnavigations are not uncommon and large yachts regularly make ocean transits — whether cruising from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, or en route to Fiji across the Pacific. The only real limitations are time and money. And for most mega yacht owners, it’s just time.

Are these really ships — how do you differentiate a yacht from a ship? Some of them really are ships and are built that way, but the difference lies in how they are used. A yacht is a vessel built for the pleasure of her owner. The best yachts are built to commercial ship standards in terms of seaworthiness, safety, and technology; often times even a higher standard.

How about the price tag for these yachts? $1,000,000 a meter is the rule of thumb, but this can vary depending on the design, builder, systems, interiors and a great many other things. The largest yacht currently in the world, AZZAM, is reported to have cost over $700M to build. In addition to the yachts themselves are the interior décors and furnishings, wine collections, fine art collections, and its “toys” and tenders (support vessels).

What happens when a yacht breaks down on the other side of the globe? Mega yachts are managed and run by highly trained professionals from the captains and crews to the yacht managers that are often hired to manage all the aspects of owning and running a yacht. Not unlike the world of aviation, maintenance is ongoing, so an all-out breakdown on the water whereby you have a dead ship is a relatively rare occurrence. Fire aboard a yacht is actually a little more common, which is the primary source of large losses on yachts that AIG has seen, and something to which we pay a lot of attention by providing shipboard fire training for crews and local firefighters in seaside communities. Whether it’s a breakdown or a fire, after the initial response to save lives and property, the yacht may call for assistance from a neighboring ship or vessel and in some cases call a towing or salvage company for assistance to get the yacht back to the nearest safest port to evaluate damage and decide on next steps. That is usually when specialty insurers are called to facilitate the logistics and repairs.

What if it just needs work? Most of the work performed on a super yacht is performed by its crew. If there is need beyond that, specialists can be flown in from all around the world. Larger yachts are like big commercial buildings with air conditioning systems, watermakers, plumbing, electrical, hydraulics, refrigeration, and virtually any mechanical system you can imagine. If expertise is not available locally, you get the experts to come to you.

Where do they go for repairs? The best local place they can find that can address the yacht’s specific need. There are numerous facilities around the world that can accommodate and repair mega yachts, but as you get farther from the Western world, these facilities may not specialize or deal with yachts everyday and may be more directed toward commercial work and a more industrial level of care and finish quality. Often in these situations, repairs are made for the safety and seaworthiness of the yacht and cosmetics are handled at a later date at a facility specializing in the high level of yacht fitting and finish.

Does work need to be done on dry land? Some works can be accomplished while the yacht is in the water , even if it involves work to the bottom or propulsion or stabilizer equipment and that may sometimes be a safer and less expensive route if it’s feasible, but some maintenance and repair does require a haul out on land or dry dock.

How much does a typical yacht weigh? There really is not a typical yacht, and the weight can vary greatly. Yachts are generally measured in gross tonnage, which is a volumetric measurement.  A yacht at the smaller end of the Mega Yacht segment, such as a 112-foot Westport, displaces 275,000 pounds and carries a gross tonnage of 207 gross tonnes. AZZAM, the largest yacht in the world, which is  590 feet long and was built by Lurssen in Germany, is reported to be over 13,000 gross tonnes.

Are there places in the U.S. that repair yachts? The U.S. is blessed with many great facilities around the country and on every coast that are capable of repairing and refitting yachts and mega yachts.   Some are boat and ship yards that are also involved in building yachts, while some are mixed between private and commercial work, and others cater exclusively to the mega yacht community. South Florida is certainly an area of concentration for these facilities, but not the only region where one can find them.

Are there cranes capable of lifting these heavy yachts? Travel lifts can accommodate some pretty large yachts, but at a certain size, a dry-dock might be necessary and in these cases, this can certainly limit your options on where your yacht can be hauled and repaired.

An aside: Marine Group Boat Works in San Diego caters to mega yacht owners. Its six-story traveling crane is capable of lifting 665-tons. Each tire (there are 16) stands a foot taller than a grown man.  The crane is said to be the strongest mobile crane in the U.S. It made record books when the 626 ton mega-yacht Ronin (previously owned by billionaire Larry Ellison – now owned by Venezuelan banker Victor Vargas ), became the largest private yacht ever to be lifted by a moving crane.

Mega Yachts to be powered by hydrogen fuel cells

Freudenberg and Lürssen Werft have entered in a strategic partnership to develop hydrogen fuel cell systems for mega yachts, allowing a vessel to cruise for 1,000 miles or stay anchored for 15 days.

The yacht industry is a significant part of the maritime economy and is key to reaching zero emission targets through decarbonisation initiatives.

Its customers value innovations, new technologies and environmental protection with yachts often situated near residential coasts where factors such as emissions is a delicate issue.

Mega Yachts Grow Bigger and Greener

Those in the marina industry see firsthand how once a boater gets hooked on boating, it’s only a matter of time until he will buy up, trading in that initial 24-footer, for something a bit longer, roomier, and maybe featuring more amenities. The world of super and mega yachts is no different, and over the past several years, even these have shown an increase in size and creature comforts. The desires of a mega yacht owner can be a bellwether for what’s to come for the boating market and the marinas that support it. With that in mind, marinas should get ready to power up and roll out the red carpet.

how are mega yachts powered

Marina Infrastructure and Support In the category of large ships, superyachts range in size from 78 to about 250, while mega yachts start off at 260 feet. For many marinas, finding space to dock even one mega yacht isn’t feasible. However, according to Suntex Marinas regional manager of Florida’s east coast, Jeff Stukel, Suntex Marinas ’ facility that caters to large yachts, Bahia Mar Yachting Center , can hold 15 megas. “Seven slips are long-term tenants and 8 are transient or monthly. We are still taking reservations for this upcoming season but the dates fill quickly,” he said. Bahia Mar is appealing because it offers side-tie docking, plenty of power, and fuel bunkering directly in the slips. As an added bonus Stukel said,“We’re across the street from Fort Lauderdale beach and plenty of restaurants and bars are within walking distance.”

It’s not just more space that’s needed. Stukel explained that bigger cleats, more stable docks, and lots of three-phase 480 power are necessary. There is heightened security concerns when hosting super and mega yachts since their owners are often well-known figures and the ships themselves attract a lot of attention. Bahia Mar has covered its property in cameras to increase safety.

Keeping mega yachts afloat requires large crews with ships easily carrying crews of 30 or more who have their own needs when coming into port. Since the Maritime Labour Convention was introduced in 2006 and enacted in 2013 assuring all seafarers regardless of nationality or flag of the ship they work on, are assured decent living and working conditions, crews have become accustomed to a better way of life than the traditional stacked bunk, close quarters, and bare necessities of the crew quarters on yachts past. And even while the Convention is not applicable to some private yachts, the social awareness of today has encouraged most yacht owners to adhere to its guidance. This has altered how marinas cater to crews who are looking for more from their temporary landside homes when yachts are docked.

“Crews need activities nearby and a crew lounge to hang out in. Golf carts for easy provisioning and high-speed hardwire internet are also essential,” Stukel said. Another practical consideration is for the marina to be able to receive packages and mail for the crew on a large scale as many have been out to sea for extended times. Filling the needs of mega yachts crews has become a priority for marinas hoping to attract more of this clientele.

For Stukel, bringing in mega yachts often comes down to hiring staff who can provide great customer service. While the dock mates who handle the big ships at Bahia Mar have to be trained to handle bigger lines and power that come with the large ships, there is no other special training required. “Great customer service is universal. We always give the same great customer service no matter what size the boat is,” he said.

A Green Floating Home Not only has the size of big yachts been growing, but the latest generation of mega yachts has a greater eco-consciousness. Reflecting this, the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show, held in late September, featured a first-ever Sustainability Hub where companies and brands that specialize in new technologies designed to reduce a superyacht’s impact gathered. While naval architects and designers have always blended science with aesthetics, that skill is now more critical than ever to meet the growing demand for environmentally-friendly yachts. This has sparked technologies like the Azipod. In this system, diesel generators supply electrical power to electric motors that drive the propellers. Those motors are encased outside the hull in watertight pods that rotate for steering. The ship is essentially powered by electricity, greatly reducing the pollutants that come with traditional engines but also potentially increasing its shoreside power needs.

how are mega yachts powered

Similarly, advanced water-cleaning systems, solar panels, and additions like electric-powered tenders are all showing up in new designs, likely dictating how marinas that cater to yachts will need to design power grids for the future. Power supplies also need attention since people are spending a longer time on their yachts and require more of the comforts of home. Partly stemming from the pandemic but also part of the growing trend of adventure travel, is that people are spending much longer periods out at sea. Whether owners or those chartering, short trips are being replaced by much longer journeys, shifting the amenities aboard and even the overall design of the ships. Yachts often carry helicopter pads, drydocks for tenders, and space for other water toys, but interior features have grown. A “home” office complete with conference and meeting space is a prerequisite and many have added wine cellars, gyms, spas, and even nanny cabins. Entertainment systems are also becoming more complex to allow viewing from anywhere aboard. Available technology for boats has enabled smart home features that make yachts as comfortable and convenient as being home.

Similar to home design, the concept of bringing the outdoors in has extended to yachts with much more glass that opens up the indoors to the outdoors. There is more deck space for optimal views and lounging and often space for several pools and even beaches. All that open space, as well as the seemingly more fragile state of the world, has dictated a need for enhanced security. Yachts are decked out with similar systems to home security with cameras, alarms, and connections to smartphones for constant monitoring.

Mega yachts will never become the regular customer of marinas instead choosing to dock at select few facilities that can accommodate their needs and wants. But watching what happens within this market can be useful as an indicator of where trends in the boating market, and by default, marinas, are heading in the future. Boaters don’t often buy up into the mega yacht range, but it doesn’t mean they don’t have the same desires for their boating experience.

MEYER Group plans world's largest and greenest mega yachts

yacht_tagansicht_d_multi_1

MEYER Group continues to work on realizing innovative ship concepts in new market segments: At the Monaco Yacht Show, the family-owned company will now show for the first time a concept for a mega yacht under the MEYER Yachts brand powered entirely by fuel cells and batteries, named ONE 50.

The MEYER Group is thus further diversifying its product portfolio. "Since 1795, we have built more than 700 ships in Papenburg alone. So our references can be seen on all the world's oceans. Now we are opening the next chapter in our history and entering the market for mega yachts. We have already received very positive feedback because we can realize almost limitless ideas and ship sizes - even the seemingly craziest ones. We are currently seeing that the demand for mega yachts is increasing and there is room for another shipyard in this segment," says Bernard Meyer.

Large and complex ships are part of the MEYER Group's core competence. In the shipbuilding halls, which can be up to 504 meters long, ships with a length of almost 350 meters have been built almost exclusively for years. "Mega yachts are a new market segment that we can serve at all our three shipyards. At MEYER, it is always our ambition to position ourselves at the top - in environmental protection as well as now in yacht size. That's why the ONE 50 is just the beginning of our ideas and plans," says Thomas Weigend.

150-meter yacht concept with fuel cells and battery system

As the first model from MEYER Yachts, ONE 50 immediately shows what the new brand stands for - pioneering spirit, exceptional excellence and no limits. At 150 metres long and 20 metres wide, ONE 50 has an enormous volume of 15,000 gross tons. On six decks, the yacht for a maximum of 44 guests offers a spa on two levels, a cinema with an adjoining billiard salon, an entertainment area including a stage, an art gallery and a huge infinity pool at the stern. Fuel cells and battery banks are installed in the engine room to make ONE 50 as sustainable as possible. Electrically powered by 25 000 kilowatts, ONE 50 will reach a maximum speed of 23 knots.

Building mega yachts may become next MEYER success story

"We see a lot of potential in mega yachts for new environmentally friendly technologies, which we also use directly in the ONE 50, for example the fuel cell for emission-free ship operation. We attach very great importance to this. In addition to the many competencies and skills we already have, we will also bring additional specialists from the yacht building industry into our team and strengthen the MEYER Group," says Malte Poelmann.

Mega yachts have the potential to become the next MEYER success story and thus also secure employment at all locations. "We are experts in building special ships, we have proven that many times. Now we are working on making mega yachts even bigger and, above all, greener," says Bernard Meyer.

Mega Millions and Powerball lotteries rack up record jackpots after rollovers

Mega Millions has a pot of $875m while Powerball is at $645m, generating excitement among players even with unbeatable odds

If you’re feeling some St Patrick’s Day magic, you might want to buy a lottery ticket. Mega Millions and Powerball have racked up some huge jackpots after weeks of rollovers.

The Mega Millions jackpot is already estimated at a whopping $875m for Tuesday night’s drawing after no tickets matched all six numbers drawn on Friday night. Monday night’s Powerball jackpot is $645m after no tickets matched the winning numbers drawn on Saturday night.

Players of either lottery are seeking to overcome staggeringly slim odds of winning. Mega Millions players have a 1 in 302.6m chance of taking home the top prize. And it’s not much easier to win a Powerball jackpot with the odds near 1 in 292.2m.

Yet excitement is high across the US with both lotteries having larger than usual jackpots simultaneously.

This is just the sixth time in the nearly 22-year history of the Mega Millions game that the jackpot has been this large, and five of those six jackpots exceeded $1bn, according to a Mega Millions statement. The winning tickets were sold in South Carolina, Michigan, Illinois, Maine and Florida.

There was one big winner in Friday night’s Mega Millions drawing. A ticket in New York matched all five white balls drawn and will win $1m.

Also Friday, California officials satisfied state law by identifying the winner of a $1.765bn jackpot of an 11 October drawing. Theodorus Struyck was named as the representative of a “group of winners” who bought the winning ticket in Frazier Park, California, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Struyck’s award was the second-highest in Powerball history, after the $2.04bn jackpot won by another Californian – Edwin Castro – in 8 November. Castro’s jackpot was reported to be the world’s largest ever lottery prize.

In Saturday night’s Powerball drawing, a player in Michigan and another in New Jersey each reportedly won $1m prizes having matched five numbers.

The Mega Millions jackpot has rolled over 28 times since 8 December, when two winning tickets were drawn in California, lottery officials said. Mega Millions drawings occur every Tuesday and Friday night.

Meanwhile, Saturday was the 33rd rollover for Powerball since 1 January, when a ticket in Michigan won a prize worth $842.4m. Powerball is drawn three times weekly, on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Anyone lucky enough to win either of the large jackpots should build a team to help with financial decisions looming at that point, including an attorney, tax expert and financial adviser with experience in handling windfalls, said Robert Pagliarini, the president and chief financial adviser for Pacifica Wealth Advisors Inc in Irvine, California.

“Take a deep breath,” Pagliarini told the Associated Press. “You will be faced with numerous tax, legal and financial decisions so I want you to stay grounded, because when you are calm you can make much better decisions.

“Lastly, even though you have professionals guiding you, do not forget that this is your money and you are in charge – they work for you. Ask questions and make them explain things so you understand them. The goal is to turn your sudden wealth into lasting wealth.”

Mega Millions tickets cost $2 and are sold in 45 states, Washington DC, and the US Virgin Islands. Powerball tickets are also $2 and are sold in 45 states, DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

Spring has sprung, daffodils are blooming, and so is the Mega Millions jackpot , which is teasing the $1 billion mark after no six-number matches emerged in Tuesday night’s drawing.

The grand prize as of Wednesday has grown to $977 million for Friday’s drawing , Mega Millions announced. It’s the sixth-highest jackpot in the history of a game that has existed for 22 years. The five that have been higher have topped a billion.

Tuesday’s winning numbers were 24, 46, 49, 62, and 66, with the gold Mega Ball number 7. A jackpot winner would have grossed $893 million, with a lump sum payout of $421.4 million.

Anyone winning Friday’s jackpot will net $461 million in cash if they take a lump sum.

There was no dearth of winners at lower levels on Tuesday, as four people won $1 million each in California, Texas, Virginia and Florida. In all, Tuesday’s drawing yielded 2.2 million winning tickets, including 41 matching four white balls plus the Mega Ball, which awarded 11 winners $20,000.

The last Mega Millions jackpot was $394 million snagged on Dec. 8 by two ticketholders in California who shared the loot, with a total cash payout of $188.6 million. Both were sold at a Chevron station on Ventura Boulevard in Encino, Mega Millions said.

It costs an additional $1 per play. Before each regular Mega Millions drawing, the Megaplier is drawn. From a pool of 15 balls, five are marked with "2X," three with "4X" and one with "5X."

In order to purchase a ticket, you'll have to visit your local convenience store, gas station or grocery store − and in a handful of states,  you can purchase tickets online .

To play, you will need to pick six numbers. Five numbers will be white balls ranging from 1 to 70. The gold Mega Ball is one number between 1 and 25.

If you believe the odds are against you, ask for a  "Quick Pick"  or an  "Easy Pick,"  the computer will randomly generate the numbers for you.

Players can add the  "Megaplier"  for $1, which can increase non-grand prize winnings by two, three, four or five times. The Megaplier is drawn before the Mega Millions numbers on Tuesday and Friday.

Here are the  six largest Mega Millions  jackpots ever won, according to the lottery:

  • Current jackpot: $977 million

What You Need to Know First

Looking into buying a mega yacht? It’s not just about the boat itself; it’s a whole world you’re getting into. These big, beautiful boats are the top of luxury, but they come with a lot to think about. Different kinds of yachts offer different experiences. Some are built for comfort with lots of space, while others are made to get you moving fast on the water. Keeping up with what’s new and green in yachting can also help you make a better choice, one that fits with your style and what you care about.

Making it Yours

Buying a mega yacht means you can make it exactly how you want it. This isn’t just picking out colors or materials. It’s about creating a place that feels like home, or even better, on the water. Things to Think About Before Buying

Owning a mega yacht is a big commitment. There’s the cost of the yacht itself, but that’s not all. Running and taking care of the yacht, paying for a crew, and keeping up with maintenance add up. The crew is especially important because they do a lot of work and help make every trip fantastic. Regular maintenance is also key to keeping your yacht in top shape and safe. Plus, you need to keep up with the laws and rules for yachting, which can change.

Getting Through the Paperwork

The paperwork and legal stuff involved in buying a yacht might seem daunting. There are contracts, registrations, and laws to think about. Fans of the Power franchise are losing Ghost again — but this time, it’s the series.

Starz has canceled Power Book II: Ghost , with the show’s fourth season to serve as its last. It will be broken into two parts, premiering June 7 and September 6. Watch the teaser above.

The move was prefaced by Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch this week when he  revealed plans to contain content costs by developing more new shows versus sustaining series longer as they become more expensive.

Starz CEO On Developing Replacements For Shows As They Become More Expensive After 3-4 Seasons

RELATED: 2024 Premiere Dates For New & Returning Series On Broadcast, Cable & Streaming

Everything is playing out as he revealed. On Wednesday, Starz announced plans for a new prequel series following everyone’s favorite Power duo, Ghost and Tommy. The series will be in the same vein as Power Book III: Raising Kanan . Today, Ghost is dead.

If you look at its star-filled ensemble, Power Book II was the obvious choice when guessing which show would be cut first. Michael Rainey Jr., who plays Tariq St. Patrick, son of Ghost (played by Omari Hardwick in the mothership series), is one of the last remaining original members of the franchise. Then you have musical powerhouses Mary J. Blige and Cliff “Method Man” Smith, and Larenz Tate, who has been booked and busy since the ’80s — and that’s to only mention a few.

The series was the first spinoff to come from Power , and it follows Ghost’s son who, after killing his father and covering up, attempts to start fresh and far from his father’s criminal empire. Unfortunately, he is dragged back into a life of crime when his mother (Naturi Naughton) is convicted of Ghost ‘s murder.

“This explosive season of Ghost is a fitting crescendo in a decade of an immensely popular franchise — fans will not be disappointed,” Kathryn Busby, President of Programming at Starz, said in a statement. “While this marks the conclusion of one chapter, our commitment to the Power Universe endures with more compelling storytelling on the horizon.”

Starz teases that Season 4 will find Tariq St. Patrick (Rainey) and Brayden Weston (Paolo) against the world as they form new alliances and find their way back into the game. But when Brayden starts flirting with a reckless new lifestyle, Tariq wonders if there really is room for two at the top.

Monet (Blige) finally might have met her maker, but she has no idea who’s behind it. Davis (Method Man), suspended and pending disbarment in the wake of his brother’s death, fully embraces the criminal side of his enterprise and finds himself working for both sides — his loyalty dependent on whichever will benefit him most. Faced with the reality that life can end in just a few ways, Effie (Lapri) buckles down on getting out and securing a legit future at Stanford.

After last season’s betrayal, Diana (Tonodeo) and Dru (Adams-Gray) question their roles in the game and the family business, while Cane (McClain) sees an opportunity to level up when he starts working for Noma (Chikezie). As Noma fights to establish her business in the States, she also tries to keep a close eye on her bratty daughter, Anya (Sydney Winbush), who is now on Tariq and Brayden’s radar. With the fate of his future in the game and his family at the forefront, Tariq must reconcile his past to rise to the top of the food chain and become who he needs to be to protect those he loves most.

Brett Mahoney serves as showrunner and executive producer for Season 4. The Power Universe series is executive produced by the creator and showrunner of the original Power , Courtney A. Kemp, through her production company End of Episode; Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson through G-Unit Film and Television; and Mark Canton through Canton Entertainment. Lionsgate Television produces the series for Starz.

To wit, Power Book III: Raising Kanan is shooting its fourth season, and its end also could be near following the news of the new spinoff Origins. However, Origins could also be a vehicle for the character of Kanan (played by 50 Cent in Power and Mekai Curtis in Raising Kanan ) to continue as Tommy and Ghost’s first interaction with their favorite foe could happen in the new season, leaving younger Kanan able to cross over.

Power Book IV: Force , starring Joseph Sikora as present-day Tommy, is shooting its third season in Chicago. They would need one series set in the present to continue the story, hypothetically, but there also have been conversations for years about expanding the franchise into London, which essentially could create endless spinoff possibilities or expansions into other cities. With that being said, Deadline understands there are no plans to end the Power Universe at this time.

Fans have expressed their displeasure at all these changes, but I might have an idea as to what would make them (us) happy: Bring back Hardwick to narrate Origin .

Mega Millions jackpot soars to $875 million

Mega Millions

If you’re feeling some St. Patrick’s Day magic, you might want to buy a  lottery ticket . Mega Millions and Powerball have racked up some massive jackpots after weeks of rollovers.

The Mega Millions jackpot is already estimated at a whopping $875 million for Tuesday night’s drawing after no tickets matched all six numbers drawn on Friday night. And Saturday night’s Powerball jackpot is $600 million.

Just keep in mind that the  odds of winning any lottery jackpot are very slim . Mega Millions players have a 1 in 302.6 million chance of taking home the top prize. And it’s not much easier to win a Powerball jackpot with the odds near 1 in 292.2 million.

But the excitement remains.

This is just the sixth time in the nearly 22-year history of the Mega Millions game that the jackpot has been this large — and five of those six jackpots exceeded $1 billion, according to a Mega Millions statement. Those winning tickets were sold in South Carolina, Michigan, Illinois,  Maine  and  Florida .

There was one big winner in Friday nights’ Mega Millions drawing. A ticket in New York matched all five white balls drawn on Friday night, and will win $1 million.

The Mega Millions jackpot has rolled over 28 times since Dec. 8, when two winning tickets were drawn in California, lottery officials said. Mega Millions drawings occur every Tuesday and Friday night.

Mega Millions isn’t the only current multi-million dollar jackpot. Saturday night’s Powerball jackpot is estimated to be $600 million after no one matched all six numbers on Wednesday, officials said.

It was the 32nd rollover for Powerball since Jan. 1, when a ticket in  Michigan  won a prize worth $842.4 million. Powerball is drawn three times weekly, on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Mega Millions tickets are $2 and are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Powerball tickets are also $2 and are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. – Just after noon on Sunday, a dark-gray AV-8B Harrier slashed across the cloud-embroidered eastern North Carolina sky at nearly 400 miles per hour, blasting by tens of thousands of spectators staring upwards at the jump jet’s last public demonstration.

The 2024 Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point Air Show opened the previous day with at least 80,000 attendees. That stampede dwarfed the 16,000 or so residents of Havelock, a military town that boasts little more than the base and a collection of fast-food stop offs for beachgoers headed east.

Lt. Col. Paul Truog, commanding officer of the “Ace of Spades” of Marine Attack Squadron (VMA) 231 took the Harrier through its paces, wrestling the stick-and-rudder aircraft through simulated attack runs, high-G turns and an abrupt halt from 500 knots to a hovering standstill.

Truog then spun the vertical/short-takeoff-and-landing (VSTOL) jet through pirouettes and hover maneuvers using the last hydraulic flight control system in the U.S. military’s fighter inventory. With 2,000 hours in the Harrier, Truog will oversee his unit’s transition to the F-35B Lighting II Joint Strike Fighter beginning next year.

“This aircraft was designed to land on highways, rearm, refuel and get back to the fight,” said Capt. Michael Fucci, who narrated Truog’s demonstration flight. “It is impossible to find a Harrier pilot who wouldn’t say that it’s the most rewarding aircraft they’ve ever flown.”

Consolidated to several East Coast squadrons in 2022, Truog’s VMA-231 is the last unit flying the AV-8B II-plus, the most-modern version of the AV-8A originally built by Hawker-Siddeley in the United Kingdom and introduced in 1969. The AV-8B, built by McDonnell Douglas, which is now Boeing, first flew in 1981 and entered service four years later.

The II-plus version currently flown sports a more powerful version of the Rolls Royce Pegasus 11 engine that produces 23,800 pounds of thrust. It also features a forwarding-looking infrared (FLIR) sensor, night-vision goggle capability, APG-65 radar and targeting pod.

At least 80,000 aviation enthusiasts crowded the tarmac on Saturday, the first of two days packed with aerobatic performances and military aircraft demonstration that included the final public display of the Marines’ AV-8B.

The Harrier squadron completed its last deployment in March with the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group and the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which operated in the Middle East and Mediterranean Sea for more than eight months.

It’s fitting that VMA-231 should usher out the Harrier’s service after four decades of service. The squadron was founded in 1919 at Marine Flying Field, Miami, having evolved from the Northern Bombing Group deployed to France during the World War I. The Marine Corps’ first aviation unit was then flying the Curtiss JN-4D Jenny biplane.

It soon will be equipped with the most-advanced fifth-generation short-takeoff and vertical landing aircraft flying, the F-35B, which will fill the role flown by the Harrier and the F-18 Hornet. Maj. Zachary Ybarra of Marine Fighter Fighter Attack Squadron 542 (VMFA-542) flew an F-35B earlier in the show.

yacht air

After taxiing and taking off to Mötley Crüe’s “Kickstart My Heart,” Ybarra, a former Harrier pilot, demonstrated the F-35’s minimum radius turn, which pulled his body into the seat with seven times the force of gravity.

Where the stick-and-rudder, hydraulic-controlled Harrier has a slight but noticeable wobble in the hover, the fly-by-wire F-35B appears to sit absolutely still as if suspended by an invisible wire. The high-tech Lockheed Martin-built F-35 never deviated from its pilot-prescribed hover altitude as it performed spins and slides along the tarmac.

The Marine Corps Aviation Plan has the VMA-231 transitioning to the F-35B beginning next year and safe for flight with six STOVL jets in the third quarter of Fiscal Year 2026. The plan calls for a total 16 F-35Bs within 24 months from reaching initial operational capability.

A second squadron at Cherry Point, VMA-223, began operating six F-35Bs last fiscal year and should have its full complement of 16 aircraft by FY 2025, which begins Oct. 1.

Already flying the F-35B is VMFA-542, which received its first Lighting II in May 2023 and became the first East Coast squadron flying the jet after being declared safe for flight in August of that year. That squadron has already deployed to Evenes Air Station in Norway for the Nordic Response 2024 NATO exercises.

Cherry Point is also home to a Harrier training unit, VMAT-203, which flies both the AV-8B and TAV-8B two-seat training aircraft. That unit will sundown in FY 2026, according to the service’s aviation plan.

Perched atop brownish columns of superheated exhaust from its four swiveling nozzles and wingtips, Truog ended his demonstration with the Harrier’s signature hover-to-vertical-landing maneuver. Rising to a deafening roar, the AV-8B descended and touched gently down, bounced slightly on extended landing gear and ended its final demonstration flight.

Truog described the performance as “bittersweet.” But the show was not quite over.

To send the AV-8 out in a blaze of glory, another Harrier joined in the Marine Air-Ground Task Force demonstration later in the show. During a high-speed low flight over dismounted Marines flown in on both a CH-53E Super Stallion and the Marine Corps’ newest heavy-lift helicopter, the CH-53K King Stallion, another Harrier simulated an attack run, igniting an 800-foot wall of flames.

Pair who tried breaching virginia marine base are jordanian nationals.

The two people whom the Marine Corps prevented from breaking onto an installation in Virginia on May 3 were Jordanian nationals, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The Criminal Investigations Division of Marine Corps Base Quantico , Virginia, arrested the pair for trespassing and notified ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, or ERO, office in Washington, office spokesperson James Covington told Marine Corps Times in a statement Thursday.

Deportation officers arrested the two people, whom Covington described as “Jordanian noncitizens.”

“Both individuals will remain in ERO custody pending removal proceedings,” Covington said.

The pair had driven up to a gate of the base in a box truck and, when questioned by military sentries, claimed to be Amazon subcontractors making a delivery to the town of Quantico, Virginia, which is accessed through the base, Marine spokesman Capt. Michael Curtis told Marine Corps Times on Tuesday.

When military police directed the two to go to a holding area to undergo standard vetting procedures, the driver instead went past that area and attempted to drive onto the base, Curtis said. The base’s law enforcement put up the vehicle denial barriers, blocking the truck from getting farther onto the base, and detained the pair.

Potomac Local News first reported the attempted breach.

The Virginia base is home to Marine Corps Combat Development Command, which is dedicated to modernizing the force, along with some of the service’s training schools and other elements. Other Defense Department components and federal law enforcement agencies also have a presence on the base.

US Marine settles into training in the Top End

17 May 2024

For United States Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Ron Pascual, one of the most important aims of his current Marine Rotational Force – Darwin (MRF-D) deployment is to “stay away from the crocodiles”.

That was the instruction given to him by his young daughter before he left home for the six-month deployment that sees up to 2500 Marines posted to the Top End.

“But I do hope to see different animals that I won’t be able to see anywhere else,” he said.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Pascual is a laboratory technician and is part of the wider Marine Air and Ground Task Force that comprises MRF-D 24.

Since arriving in Australia two months ago, Petty Officer 2nd Class Pascual has participated in a number of medical training evolutions, such as the emergency medical technician course and various other interservice training events.

“Most of the training has honed our interoperability skills such as emergency care training with the ADF to see how see how they do casualty care,” he said.

“My favourite thing about being here is the new experience and just seeing how other people in the world do things.”

Commanding Officer Colonel Brian Mulvihill said the marines and sailors were honoured to continue the legacy of cooperation and interoperability with the ADF.

“Our strong alliance contributes to stability in the region and makes all our forces ready to respond to any crisis or contingency that arises,” Colonel Mulvihill said.

For Marine Sergeant Thomas Miller, the chance to travel to somewhere like the Northern Territory and to work with other, like-minded allied nations represented the opportunity of a lifetime.

“I think most people would agree, Australia is one of our strongest Allies in the world,” Sergeant Miller said.

“Historically, Marines in Australia, especially the 1st Marine Division, go back a long time in history.”

Since arriving in Australia, Sergeant Miller has been working with Australian Army anti-armour teams and is preparing to participate in Exercise Southern Jackaroo in Townsville later this month.

MRF-D is one of six United States force posture initiatives which form a key component of the Australia – United States alliance.

The Marines will remain in Australia until October, 2024.

Up, Up and Not OK: Letting Go of Balloons Could Soon Be Illegal in Florida

In an effort to curb microplastics and marine pollution, state lawmakers voted to ban intentional releases.

  • Share full article

A pink balloon, half-deflated, floats in blue ocean water with a pink ribbon dragging behind it.

By Cara Buckley

Balloons released in the sky don’t go to heaven. They often end up in oceans and waterways, where they’re 32 times more likely to kill seabirds than other types of plastic debris. Despite this, humans like to release them en masse, be it to celebrate a loved one’s life or a wedding, or to reveal the gender of a baby.

The practice is on the verge of becoming illegal in Florida, where the legislature has joined a growing number of states to ban the intentional release of balloons outdoors. The Florida ban is expected to be signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and would take effect July 1.

Florida is at the forefront of a dizzying and contentious array of statewide bans, outlawing lab grown meat , certain books from school libraries and classrooms, and most abortions after six weeks . But the balloon ban is rare for garnering widespread bipartisan support. It was championed by environmentalists and sponsored by two Republican lawmakers from the Tampa Bay area, Linda Chaney, a state representative and Nick DiCeglie, a state senator.

“Balloons contribute to the increase in microplastic pollution which is harmful to every living thing including humans, polluting our air and drinking water,” Ms. Chaney wrote in an email.

“My hope is that this bill changes the culture, making people more aware of litter in general, including balloons,” she said.

Ms. Chaney said she first heard about the perils of balloon debris in 2020. Aquatic animals often mistake balloons for jellyfish and feel full after eating them, essentially starving from the inside out. Ribbons affixed to balloons entangle turtles and manatees. Balloons also pose a threat to land animals. In her research, Ms. Chaney learned about a pregnant cow that died after ingesting a balloon while grazing. The unborn calf died too.

The bill closes a loophole in an existing Florida law that allowed for the outdoor release of up to nine balloons per person in any 24-hour period, a provision that critics say didn’t achieve the goal of reducing marine trash.

The new legislation makes it clear that balloons can pose an environmental hazard, supporters say. It equates intentionally releasing a balloon filled with a gas lighter than air with littering, a noncriminal offense that carries a fine of $150. The ban also applies to outdoor releases of any balloons described by manufacturers as biodegradable.

The ban does not restrict the sale of balloons by party suppliers or manufacturers; they could still be used indoors or as decorations outdoors if properly secured.

Balloons released by a government agency or for government sanctioned scientific purposes would be exempt from the new law. Hot air balloons recovered after launch or balloons released by children aged 6 and younger would also be exempt.

The bill counts among its supporters the Florida Retail Association as well as the Coalition for Responsible Celebration, a trade association for balloon distributors and party stores, which in a statement said it recognized “the importance of promoting responsible balloon usage and ensuring safe access to these joy-inspiring products.”

The legislation marks a win for environmentalists hamstrung by Florida legislation known as the “ban on bans,” which prohibits counties and local municipalities from regulating single use plastics and plastic bags.

Jon Paul “J. P.” Brooker, director of Florida conservation for the nonprofit group Ocean Conservancy, said that increased concern about the health of beaches, a major driver of tourism, helped conservationists and lawmakers find common ground.

“Florida is its beaches,” Mr. Brooker said, “People are not going to flock by millions to them if they’re trashed and there’s dead animals and plastic and trash all over.”

Mr. Brooker said while it remains to be seen how vigorously police will enforce the ban, the fact that they will be able to issue tickets was a good thing. “More than anything,” he added,” it gives us in the environmental community an opportunity to educate the public as to why it’s bad.”

Public sentiment in Florida against balloon releases has been growing. Earlier this year, the city of Miami Beach adopted an ordinance banning party balloons from public marinas, marine facilities, parks and public beaches. This followed the arrest of two people in 2022 who were filmed popping balloons aboard a chartered yacht and letting the remnants fall into Biscayne Bay.

The balloon release ban follows another environmental win in the state. For more than 30 years, Mr. Brooker said cigarettes were the number one form of trash found on the state’s beaches. Then in 2022, the state passed a law allowing local governments to restrict cigarette smoking and vaping on public beaches and parks. More than 50 counties and municipalities, accounting for more than 500 miles of the state’s 1,350 miles of coastline, have since outlawed smoking and vaping on beaches, Mr. Brooker said.

“This isn’t just the bailiwick of progressives, and it’s certainly not something that draws the enmity of conservatives,” Mr. Brooker said. “It’s all Floridians banding together to protect Florida’s beaches that are the backbone of our economy and the underpinning of our cultural identity.”

According to Emma Haydocy, Florida policy manager for the Surfrider Foundation, seven other states have cracked down on outdoor balloon releases. And just last week, lawmakers in North Carolina filed their version of the Florida legislation.

In lieu of releasing balloons, conservationists are urging people to instead plant a tree or toss flower petals into the water.

“There are so many other ways of celebrating that are not detrimental,” Ms. Haydocy said.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

  • Military Ospreys Can't Fly More Than 30 Minutes from Landing Airfield Months After Grounding Lifted

U.S. Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey lands at Camp Foster, Okinawa

Air Force , Marine Corps and Navy V-22 Ospreys were all given the green light to fly again in early March and have been slowly taking to the skies following a tragic crash that killed eight airmen late last year in Japan.

But months after the grounding was lifted, there are still restrictions in place that significantly limit the aircraft's ability to operate, Military.com has learned.

The services are barred from flying the controversial tiltrotor aircraft more than 30 minutes away from a suitable airfield to divert to in case anything goes wrong. That has caused some of the services, such as the Navy, to continue relying on other aircraft to accomplish tasks that the Osprey would have taken on.

Cmdr. Beth Teach, a spokesperson for Naval Air Forces, confirmed to Military.com on Thursday that the restriction was handed down by the V-22 Joint Program Office, part of Naval Air Systems Command, and is a requirement that all the services are following.

It was not immediately clear what would constitute a suitable landing zone for the tiltrotor aircraft which, by design, is meant to land quickly like a helicopter in austere conditions.

The Joint Program Office declined to comment to Military.com regarding the restriction.

A spokesperson for the Marine Corps could not provide details on the restriction, but said efforts are underway to return the aircraft to full operations.

"Operational security associated with our forward-deployed Marines and sailors limits our ability to provide details regarding any potential platform restrictions," Capt. Pedro Caballero, a spokesperson for the Marine Corps, told Military.com when asked whether the restrictions applied to its roughly 350 Ospreys, the vast majority of the military's fleet.

"The Marine Corps, after a thorough review of all available engineering data and with revisions to the flight manual in place, is now enacting a deliberate plan to return all 17 MV-22 squadrons to full capability," Caballero said. "The Marine Corps' three-phased approach begins with a focus on regaining basic flight currency, rebuilding units' instructor cadres, and achieving proficiency in core and basic skill training for pilots and aircrew."

Lt. Col. Rebecca Heyse, a spokesperson for Air Force Special Operations Command, told Military.com that the service is following the Joint Program Office's guidance for their return to flight plans but didn't provide additional details about current flight restrictions.

That restriction was publicly identified in a House draft text of the national defense authorization bill released this week. The bill details limitations and woes with the Navy's variant, the CMV-22, and how it's forcing the sea service to continue to rely more heavily on its aging C-2A Greyhound fleet, lawmakers wrote.

"The committee understands that current CMV-22 operations are limited to flights and missions that stay within 30 minutes of a suitable divert airfield," according to the House Armed Services Committee document. "This prohibits the use of the CMV-22 for carrier onboard support of deployed aircraft carriers once they have left their homeport."

The Navy used the Greyhound, which has been in service for 60 years and is slated to be retired by 2026, to fill the gaps when the Ospreys were grounded, but even though the Osprey is flying again, it appears the service is still relying on the planes.

That raised concerns for lawmakers who asked the Navy to provide House Armed Services with a report by Feb. 1, 2025, on how the service will adjust once the C-2A is no longer available.

"With no other option available, the committee supports this interim solution but recognizes it is not a viable long-term solution beyond 2026," the draft bill said.

News about the Navy's restrictions and that it affected all variants of the Osprey was first reported by Aviation Week .

All of the services have been cautiously returning to the skies following a Nov. 29 Air Force special operations Osprey crash off the coast of Japan that killed all eight service members on board -- the deadliest CV-22 crash in the service's history -- and led to a monthslong, military-wide grounding of the aircraft.

Military.com reported earlier this month that the Air Force had begun conducting flight checks for its Osprey variant, the CV-22. The Marine Corps and the Navy began flying some of their aircraft in March, the same month the Joint Program Office gave the OK to resume operations.

The Osprey Joint Program Office provided few details on what mechanical failure led to the deadly crash and how it planned to fix it.

"We have high confidence that we understand what component failed, and how it failed," Marine Corps Col. Brian Taylor, the manager of the V-22 program, told reporters in March. "I think what we are still working on is the 'why.'"

Meanwhile, the Osprey is looking at a makeover that officials hope will keep the aircraft flying until at least 2055 -- and beyond.

The Joint Program Office, which oversees the V-22's development and operations, is looking to replace aging components in the aircraft's cockpit, as well as test solutions for a mechanical issue that has led to more than a dozen mishaps in its operational lifespan.

"There's a ton of life left in this platform and there's a ton of mission left in this platform," Taylor said last month at the Modern Day Marine Expo in Washington, D.C.

The mechanical issue the program office hopes to address involves a notorious clutch problem , called a "hard clutch engagement," which contributed to a crash in 2022 that killed five Marines. It is also known to have been involved in at least 15 other V-22 incidents since 2010.

Taylor mentioned that the program office oversaw the disassembly of clutches within the aircraft, including V-22s with 2,000 hours of flight and those with less than a hundred, which "helped us better understand this environment inside of this clutch assembly," he said.

He added that a new prototype for one of the likely culprits causing this issue -- the input quill assembly -- will be tested within the next month. That prototype includes 15 design changes, he said.

"When you purchase aircraft over about a 30-year span, you end up with some configuration challenges," Taylor said. "And that's what we're still kind of working through."

While operations are limited, Taylor said that Ospreys are abundant in the air -- and have been for more than two months.

"I haven't done this math problem, but it's pretty safe to say that 24 hours a day, there's a V-22 flying somewhere on the planet ... doing our nation's business," he said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Air Force instructor pilot was killed when the ejection seat activated while the jet was still on the ground at a Texas military base, the Air Force said Tuesday.

The instructor pilot was in a T-6A Texan II at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, when the seat activated during ground operations on Monday. The pilot was taken to a hospital and died Tuesday, the Air Force said. The pilot’s name was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The T-6A Texan II is a single-engine two-seater aircraft that serves as a primary trainer for Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps pilots. In a training flight an instructor can sit in the front or back seat; both have lightweight Martin-Baker ejection seats that are activated by a handle on the seat.

In 2022, the T-6 fleet and hundreds of other Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps jets were grounded after inspections revealed a potential defect with one component of the ejection seat’s cartridge actuated devices, or CADs. The fleet was inspected and in some instances the CADs were replaced.

When activated the cartridge explodes and starts the ejection sequence.

Ejection seats have been credited with saving pilots’ lives, but they also have failed at critical moments in aircraft accidents. Investigators identified ejection seat failure as a partial cause of an F-16 crash that killed 1st Lt. David Schmitz, 32, in June 2020.

In 2018, four members of a B-1 bomber crew earned the Distinguished Flying Cross when, with their aircraft on fire, they discovered one of the four ejection seats was indicating failure. Instead of bailing out, all of the crew decided to remain in the burning aircraft and land it so they all would have the best chance of surviving. All of the crew survived.
