Sometimes it’s hard to see from the outside what performance you might expect from one sailing boat vs another and so, like in cars, one measure often used is the Power to Weight ratio, in boats this is called the Sail Area to Displacement ratio or SAD. This is a universal measure that allows us to compare widely different models and come to a reasonably accurate view on their likely relative performance under similar sailing conditions.

Multihull World use a variation of the SAD calculations used by the major sail racing organisations and the figures we publish broadly look like this:

• SAD under 15 : Motor sailer
• SAD 15 - 20: cruiser
• SAD 20 - 25: Performance cruiser
• SAD 25 – 30: Cruiser racer
• SAD above 30: race boat

The calculation takes the upwind sail area and divides it by the actual weight of the boat. The calculation is a little more complicated than that but that’s the essence. It takes no account of hull shape, skipper quality or any other differences.

Unfortunately, not every vendor knows the sail area of their sails and not everyone knows the weight of their boat – for this reason we sometimes don’t have the SAD available to publish. Also, some manufacturers publish a weight that is well below the real weight of their boats and in that way appear to have much more performance than they actually do.

However, leaving those anomalies aside, we think this measure is an interesting one for those who are comparing multihulls or are coming to multihulls for the first time.

As a general rule – one generally trades performance for accommodation. If your boat is under 50ft and has walkways either side of beds low in the hull then she isn’t going to sail very well!

Jump to Prout Catamarans For Sale

Prout catamarans (UK) have have a history going back 50 years, with a reputation for tough, high quality, popular design and excellent ocean going capability. Roland and Francis Prout were successful canoeists who paddled for Great Britain in the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games. Soon after, they decided to tie two of their sleek cold-moulded kayaks together with bamboo poles resulting in an efficient high-speed sailing craft. The Prout business grew from those successful experiments in 1954 to the most famous and well respected catamaran producing company in the world, picking up a ‘Queens award for industry’ along the way. In 1964 it was a Prout catamaran that became the first multi-hull to circumnavigate the globe.

There were more Prout catamarans circumnavigating the world than any other design at one time. All Prout catamarans are designed and constructed by yachtsmen to combine technology with traditional boat building skills. Prout Catamarans was the first boat builder in the UK to receive Lloyds ISO 9002 quality standard recognition. Prout prides themselves in keeping in touch with owners through an excellent after-sales service and a strong owners association.

Prout 45 (Florida)

The owner of Homebase is in talks about selling the DIY retailer to one of Britain’s biggest general merchandise chains, as it prepares to launch a wider auction of the business it rescued six years ago.

Sky News has learnt that Hilco Capital, which took control of an ailing Homebase in 2018, has had an approach from The Range, which has quietly become one of the country's biggest retail successes, about a deal.

City sources said the discussions were not certain to lead to an agreement but analysts suggested that if they did, The Range was likely to want the bulk of Homebase's roughly-140 stores.

A formal sale process encompassing other potential bidders is expected to get underway in the coming days, according to one insider.

Hilco acquired Homebase following a disastrous spell under the ownership of Wesfarmers, an Australian group, during which it lost hundreds of millions of pounds.

Other retailers touted in the past as potential bidders for Homebase include B&M European Value Retail, the London-listed discount retailer.

The DIY chain has had a nomadic existence, being owned at various points by J Sainsbury and then coming under common ownership with Argos as part of Home Retail Group.

Wesfarmers' foray into the UK proved an unmitigated failure, leading to Hilco - which has owned retail brands such as HMV and Cath Kidston - taking control.

In 2018, Homebase went through a company voluntary arrangement which closed a substantial number of stores, renegotiated rent deals and about 1500 job losses.

The turnaround investor succeeded in stabilising it, but saw its fortunes impacted by the pandemic and subsequent cost-of-living crisis.

An initial surge in sales when COVID-19 hit as consumers focused on home improvement gave way to choppier market conditions.

However, Homebase lost more than £40m in 2022, according to accounts filed at Companies House, although last year's performance is understood to have been significantly better.

As well as its operations in the UK, Homebase has a presence in Ireland, with the two divisions potentially being sold separately.

Based in Devon, The Range is part of CDS Superstores, which is controlled by the businessman Chris Dawson.

Last year, it paid £7m to buy the brand and intellectual property assets of Wilko, which had collapsed into administration.

Since then, Mr Dawson has opened a string of new Wilko outlets.

The Range trades from more than 200 outlets across Britain selling homewares, furniture and DIY products.

Mr Dawson opened its first store in Plymouth in 1989.

Nicknamed 'the Del Boy billionaire' because of the distinctive number-plate on his Rolls-Royce Wraith, he has become one of Britain's most successful retail entrepreneurs.

Hilco and Homebase have been contacted for comment and The Range could not be reached for comment.

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. ABOUT CATAMARAN BOATS

Catamarans have two hulls and can be either sailing or power boats. With a wide beam, they are very spacious, as well as stable, safe, and fast, making them popular bluewater cruisers. Search for new or used catamarans for sale by all the top brands, and refine the search by price, length, or location. 

Main Characteristics of Catamarans

Catamarans are easily identified by their double hulls (and in the case of trimarans, triple hulls), which make them stand out among more traditional monohull vessels. Catamarans can be either sail or motor vessels, and vary widely in size from beach-launched and dinghy-style beginner catamarans up to superyacht luxury vessels. 

Catamarans have many positive attributes, which are helping them gain popularity throughout the world. Due to their overall wider beam, they offer much more space than a monohull of the same length; for example, a 40-foot catamaran often offers the same space as a 50-foot monohull. They have a unique layout, with larger boats featuring cabins in both hulls and a spacious living space on an above-the-waterline bridgedeck in between the hulls. Many catamarans are also capable of high speeds, especially in a straight line, which makes them popular to race as well as cruise for long distances.

When it comes to safety, catamarans are highly regarded as being virtually unsinkable thanks to having two hulls, a characteristic valued by bluewater cruisers. While they are extremely stable boats and heel far less than a monohull, in storm-force winds and waves they can capsize. Even then, they are much less likely to sink than a monohull.

Types of Catamaran

Sailing catamarans.

Sailing catamarans dominate the multihull market and have been in production for decades. Sales are seeing a huge boom, however, as sailors realize the safety and space advantages they typically hold over monohull yachts. Sailing cats can be as small as a dinghy, sailed off a beach, such as the one- and two-person Hobie Cats. From there they can range up to multi-cabin vessels with huge above-water living spaces designed for long-range voyages.

Power Catamarans

Also rising in popularity are power catamarans , as owners realize the vast living space that they offer. With their wide beam, they allow for multiple cabins between the two hulls and a light-filled, above-water bridgedeck and cockpits that allow for multiple couples or large families to cruise on a vessel that can also be handled by just two people. 

Cruising and Bluewater Catamarans

There is considerable crossover between bluewater and cruising catamarans, with many suitable for both coastal weekend cruising and around-the-world ocean voyages. When it comes to either, the positive attributes of the catamaran shine through. Both power and sailing catamarans offer dramatically more space in the same length of boat as a monohull, with huge amounts of living space, wraparound views, full-sized galleys, multiple cabins and heads, and spacious decks. They’re fast and sturdy, too, and don’t heel like a standard monohull under sail, offering incredible stability.

Luxury Catamarans

Beautiful examples of luxury catamarans (many of which are semi- or custom-built) are becoming more commonplace, with some classifying as true superyachts. At a smaller scale, luxury catamarans can offer high-spec living spaces, high performance, green propulsion, renewable energy, and the latest innovation. 

Best Catamaran Brands

The catamaran industry is still relatively small compared to that of monohulls, with some key brands paving the way in design and development. As catamarans are favored by many charter companies, some brands such as Lagoon and Leopard produce models for both the charter and private owner market with different layouts. These are big names in the catamaran industry, with a fleet of sturdy, well-designed sailing and motor cats in the 40-60-foot sector. 

Within the competitive 40- to 60-foot sector the French company Fountaine-Pajot has been in the industry for over four decades and is also highly regarded for its bluewater cruisers. Other notable brands include Outremer , Catana , Beneteau Excess , Antares, and Xquisite , all designed for long-term livability as well as bluewater cruising. So too are HH Catamarans and BALI Catamaran s, known for their clever use of interior space. 

On the smaller end of the cruising catamaran sector are top brands with moderate-sized models such as Seawind , Nautitech and Comar . Their models run the gamut from high-performance cats to smart, modestly priced cruisers.

When it comes to motor catamarans, the market is still relatively small but growing year on year. Many of the brands mentioned above also build excellent motor cats to add to their line-up, while brands such as Invincible Boats , Freeman Boatworks , and Aquila Power Catamarans are specializing in fishing and cruising motor cats. 

Why Choose a Catamaran?

Catamarans offer a huge amount of extra space than a monohull of the same length thanks to their wide, double-hull beam. They are also renowned for their stability under sail, and do not keel much. This is ideal for those wanting to cruise gently with friends and family aboard, sail around the world, or for those prone to seasickness.

Yacht Charter & Superyacht News > Written by Eva Belanyiova The result of a wonderful passion for creating ship models is this 1:50 scale model of the 126-metre luxury motor yacht OCTOPUS , which was built by the prestigious German shipyard Lurssen in 2003. Jurgen Goller and Roland Hache constructed the 2,52 metre superyacht OCTOPUS model and presented it for the first time on water this September. Roland Hache also built a model of the motor yacht Lady Lola (see picture at the bottom of the article). Scale model of the motor yacht Octopus It took two years to build the Octopus Yacht Model and she was built based only on pictures and different photos found on the internet. The two friends had absolutely no access to the general plans, layout drawings or any other designs of the original yacht. Model of the luxury yacht Octopus The hull of the Octopus Yacht Model was constructed in GFK and ABS, polyester and wood were used for the rest of the parts. The railing was created using different metal parts. Scale model of the luxury yacht Octopus - the model is 2,52m long Weighing 62kg, the model is fitted with 2 Bosch electrical engines and has a lead acid battery of 12 V – 7,5 Ah with a duration of about 4 hours. It has impressive 460 led lights on its five decks, which can be regulated thanks to a dimmer, showing her elegant silhouette when put on water at night. Unfortunately, we live in a culture where it is nearly impossible to go broke making mediocre movies or producing annoying and cloned rap music, but quality, if not priced "competitively", frequently becomes extinct, in the mass market sense...try finding a a good quality toaster or other small appliance at any price. I fully plan on unveiling all of the acquisitions when we have more space, I hope, in a few years, assuming I don't prematurely expire ( I am 63, but in much better shape than most my age... I should know, I'm a physician ). However, no one's future is assured. Interestingly enough, my wife inquired today as to whether a friend of hers could bring her grandchildren over to see my ship models, as they seem to have a fascination for sailing ships (probably watched Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean too many times), so I would say that's a positive sign.
