Fun in the catamaran

Loved i! Had an absolutely fantastic time. The boat is brand, spanking new, the crew is excellent and very knowledgeable, so I felt very safe in their hands and there was even a bar for drinks and nibbles, to lullaby us as we headed towards the sunset. The tour headed towards the VTS tower, near the river mouth and then circled round to the opposite river bank. Then, it edged slowly towards Lisbon again and took us to the most impressive square, with its beautifully geometrical 1700s buildings in bright blues and yellows, lit like a nativity. The sun was just setting, at this point, so it painted a magical picture of romanticism and sunset that I'll never forget. It's always endearing to be able to get on a boat, leave all our worries behind and enjoy an escape to different surroundings, face battered by the wind and sun, inhaling the river breeze. There was even the tentative promise of dolphins and we ended up seeing a couple, though I'm told it's a common occurrence, so there's even that to look forward to! My friends had great wine and gin, and the Pasteis de Nata were deliciously warm and comforting. The boat even boasts a TV where us "mariners" can enjoy a game or two if needs absolutely must! All in all, a lovely 3-hour "holiday", to recharge batteries and take away an image of this city that I'll never forget. It's so different, seen from the river! So gorgeous. A repeat is definitely mandatory.

I´ve already done several sunset cruises on Tejo River during the last couple of years. This was by far the best of all. Being a brand new sailing catamaran, GoM Mary impressed me by its comfort and flexibility, meaning we can have different spots within the boat: at the top sided with the pilot, at the front feeling the water passing under our feet with a lot of people dancing or at the back, more protected from the wind, on even inside in the big saloon eating Pasteis de Belém. Nevertheless the rooftop is still my favourite with its 360 ª view. I was told we were more than 30 tourist but we had plenty of space, never felt crowded. The music was great, and at the front turn to become a very zippy and animated disco and at the back a more quiet ambience. When we reached Torre de Belém we saw a lot of dolphins jumping in the water, following the boat for more than 10 minutes. The crew told us it is very frequent nowadays, as the river is becoming cleaner and cleaner. The crew seemed very professional and knowledge. Seeing Lisbon and Terreiro do Paço from the river is astonishing. Next time i will do it with dinner included. To be repeated

Realizei um Passeio com a opção Sunset, mas que de todo foi um Sunset, digamos que foi um passeio de barco a hora do por do sol pelo Tejo. Duas horas e meia de passeio e sem dúvida ótimo, mas as condições que me deram nem por isso, pois realizei mais de 1:45h de passeio virado de costas para o sol, com frio e as voltinhas literalmente pelo rio e o sol cada vez mais longe. Digamos que em certa parte éramos os únicos de barco a navegar em sentido oposto ao sol. Passeio resume-se a sair das docas, irmos até perto do MAAT e voltar para trás até ao ROSSIO e regressarmos as docas. Como sugestão digo para entrarem pelo mar dentro e verem o por do sol junto ao mar. Isso é um verdadeiro sunset com música animada. A música ambiente é boa, para o efeito de passeio pelo Tejo. Para o efeito de Sunset, não. Fizemos o passeio como casal para desfrutar e sentimo-nos pessoas a mais no barco. A tripulação e acessível e bastante entretidos. Go Mary - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

As costume dramas go, ‘Mary & George’ fails to achieve ‘Great’-ness

I thought for sure I’d gobble up “Mary & George,” a new Starz miniseries set in the early 1600s. The royal costume drama, based on Benjamin Woolley’s nonfiction book “The King’s Assassin: The Fatal Affair of George Villiers and James I,” is about the rise of a young courtier named George Villiers who becomes King James’s lover and a powerful figure himself, largely thanks to the machinations of his devious mother, Mary, played by Julianne Moore. It sounds like the kind of lush castle romp I generally enjoy. But the series, created by D.C. Moore, wore on me.

It drips with attitude, wit, and archness, which can sometimes work — see “The Great” — but fails to provide enough character and narrative to back it all up. It doesn’t build so much as tread water. Just the fact that there’s competition among young men to bed the king doesn’t a seven-episode series make. It’s fun to see a historical fiction effortlessly including same-sex relationships, of which Mary partakes as well; but the court intrigues, which Mary braves with naked ambition, don’t gather enough steam.

Moore is excellent, oozing haughty desperation and fierce but utterly non-maternal mothering. She makes it all watchable enough for me, as does Tony Curran, who is remarkable as the king, a high-living, sexually insatiable, and chaotic fellow. They bring energy and purpose to their scenes. But, as young George, Nicholas Galitzine isn’t given enough of a character — or, perhaps, doesn’t find enough of a character — to carry so much of the show. When he and the king are truly in love, it’s hard to know what qualities the king has fallen for. He’s pretty, and pretty nebulous.

With their new 88  footer from the Double Deck range, Sunreef are unveiling an ultra-comfortable cruising catamaran built for an experienced boating family, and are confirming their ability to complete fully customized projects on the same timescale as production boats.

It took no more than 9 months for the Sunreef 88 DD, first announced at the 2016 Cannes boat show, to see its hulls hit the water in Gdansk, Poland.  Yet this is not just a well-honed semi-custom boat, but a brand new model in the range which is already known to connoisseurs and necessarily demanding owners. Having owned many of the best in English and Italian motor yachts, this family got into sailing with a beautiful 25 meter ketch.  The natural instability of a heeling monohull prompted them to ask Ian Sellers, their skipper, to think of another solution.  The choice of a sailing catamaran was a logical one: the space, stability, low draft, panoramic view and the economical running are irrefutable arguments for those who want XXL-sized comfort.  

A good average speed to cross the Atlantic or to reach new anchorages in the Caribbean islands after a beautiful summer season in the Mediterranean also guided their choice.  It simply remained to find a shipyard capable of satisfying the wishes of the owner.  With a budget of more than 4 million euros, this owner was looking for a boat that was not just ultra-equipped and of the highest quality, but a unit that was entirely made ...

Description.

The start of the ambitious Sunreef 88 Double Deck project was officially communicated during Sunreef Yachts’ press conference at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2016. After eight months of intensive work, the shipyard proudly announced the launch of this catamaran with a zealous, sporty look.

An experienced yachtsman switching from a massive motor yacht , the owner decided to commission the Sunreef 88 Double Deck to pursue a more stable navigation style with greater living space. Indeed, a challenging project for the shipyard’s engineering and design teams.

Nonetheless, this journey was destined to keep the promise of delivering a state-of-the art fully customized sailing catamaran from the start. To achieve the goal of building a seaworthy and dynamic catamaran, Sunreef Yachts’ team of naval architects conceived a completely new yacht design which seemed far sportier than the rest.

Same as all yachts within her range, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck too features a mezzanine level inside the saloon and a spacious master stateroom with a panoramic view in the bow part of the main deck. However, her superstructure was granted a more aerodynamic aspect. As a result, the 88-footer emphasis equally on both performance and luxury, offering over 300m² of living space and an outstanding sailing experience.

Despite this, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck remains a family-friendly yacht offering the best of comfort and safety. The innovative composite superstructure of the sailing yacht conceals a smart and functional layout with luxurious accommodations for eight guests and up to five crew members.

Upon the owners’ request, the interior decor of the Sunreef 88 Double Deck features exclusive natural materials: Chambord oak, linen, leather, natural stone, and quartz tiles – all contribute to the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the sailing yacht . The feeling of warmth was also achieved through applying numerous orange accents to the interiors – an important color for the owner’s family who consider it to be a symbol of energy.

New Sunreef 92 Double Deck Sailing Catamaran

From the same people who brought you the original Sunreef Yacht, comes the new Sunreef 92 Double Deck , with a new design which not only streamlines the deck house, but tops it with a giant 40 m 2 fly bridge.

This was inspired by similar designs found on other super yacht designs. In collaboration with K-Epsilon and Rivoyre Ingenierie , The Sunreef Naval Architecture Bureau has intensely studied performance and sea capabilities using state of the art CFD, computational flow dynamics to create the ultimate in catamaran luxury.

Using integrated stepped hull chins, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck catamaran increases interior space, without compromising performance. Now this yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests, in up to 5 double luxury suites, as well as a crew of four.

Sunreef’s 92 Double Deck also features a canoe style boom and carbon mast, one of this manufacturer’s specialties. How are they able to accomplish such feats? They added a new mezzanine floor, which includes a coffee table and lounge, located on the port side of the main deck dining area, freeing up more space below for larger cabins and storage space, or even more suites if you prefer.

Because of this innovative design modification, now the owner’s suite occupies two floors of the entire front area of this yacht, with a private luxury office, gym and leisure area on the upper level, with the bathroom, wardrobe and storage area below deck. Each cabin has an extended size, three way access to their King sized beds, with spectacular panoramic sea views. Not only this, but each luxury suite comes with its own separate bath and shower area, large closets, storage lockers, as well as their own air conditioning and a comprehensive entertainment system.

With a LOA of 27 meters, an 11.2m beam, and a 1.6m draft, this super yacht has a 80 ton displacement. It will also be powered by two 405HP 1200 L/3170 Gal engines, and will be able to cruise at speeds up to 15 knots. The 70m 2 cockpit will also include a large dining area, sunbathing mattresses, and diving equipment. Its spacious fly bridge is fitted with a jacuzzi, two wet bars, barbecue, ice makers and even a pair of jet skis. It will also include a tender, hidden in a specially built locker under the main sun pad of the cockpit.

Even though this is only the second of such models, it isn’t hard to see why the Sunreef 92 Double Deck sailing catamaran is on it’s way to be one of the most sought after luxury yachts. With it’s innovative design, state of the art electronics, and focus on luxury, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck is top of the line, and a must for people who may still think they have it all. A seafaring adventure on island routes double-decker catamaran cruise.

Embark on a luxury catamaran cruise adventure out of Ocho Rios, Jamaica that takes adventure to new heights.

Standing on the dock, I pause a moment to let my gaze travel slowly upwards at the gleaming catamaran floating before me. Rocking gently in the calm Caribbean Sea, the beautiful double-decker  Calipsoul  seems familiar yet exciting and new to me all at the same time. I had chosen Island Routes Catamaran Dunn’s River Cruise the last time I was in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It had been the perfect combination of relaxation and excitement that I had been looking for. We had also done the romantic Lovers Rock evening cruise, literally sailing into the sunset together. Making the cruise reservation Both times it had turned out exactly as promised and this time around when I knew I was heading back to Jamaica, I reached out to the wonderfully helpful Island Routes team yet again. I spoke with them about how much I had enjoyed the last catamaran excursion I did with them and shared that this time I would be coming with a group of friends and family of all ages. I had enjoyed the snorkeling aspect of the Dunn’s River cruise so much but it had been fairly short and some of my group said they really wanted to let loose and relax.

Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise They suggested the Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise. They explained that it was like The Dunn’s River cruise minus the climbing, which my mom was happy to hear about, and a lot of time spent exploring the underwater world. Then they told me how great my timing was as they now have a brand new double-decker catamaran! To be honest, I couldn’t quite picture it so I didn’t know what to expect. Standing here, about to step onto the Calipsoul , I am filled with delight as the kids all leap aboard. We aren’t the only family on board that day and as my group is fairly large, coming over on the shuttle service from the Beaches all-inclusive family resort, I had been worried about feeling crowded. Yet, what we discover is the perfect blend of being able to find ample areas for ourselves while also having the opportunity to meet other people as equally excited as we are.

Snorkeling lesson Once in the water, we are directed by the crew, who have joined us, where to swim and, along the way, they make sure to point out coral formations and beautiful fish ensuring we have an amazingly immersive experience (pun intended). I explore for ages and I am very excited as I brought my waterproof camera with me this time and aim to meet my self-imposed challenge of taking an underwater selfie with tropical fish. Although unsuccessful because they move pretty quickly, I still have a blast. Suddenly, someone is tapping me on my shoulder and I pop my head up to see one of the crew members guiding me back to the boat. Making my way back I realize that, as strong a swimmer as I am, I’m pretty happy to have the life vest on as it allows me to keep looking underwater while I make my way back without having to put in too much effort in keeping myself headed in the right direction so all my focus is on the magical world below me. Trampoline for the kids, hammocks for the adults We climb aboard and the teenagers head to the trampoline area (I was told that’s what it’s called). For people who may not normally hang out on a boat, this area serves an engineering purpose but is also a pretty cool place to just hang out on as it’s like a flat stretched-out hammock where you can just lay out and chill. I divest myself of the fins, mask, and vest and realize I’m pretty hungry! Lunch on the ocean Luckily, the food comes out and everyone piles up their plates with tropical fruit, delicious wraps and chips, and salsa, and we head for a sunny spot on the upper deck of the catamaran. We start chatting with other people and decide it’s just about the right time for the rum version of that delicious fruit punch (after all we’re in Jamaica, how can we pass up the delicious rum when no one is driving or diving). My husband opts for a cold Red Stripe instead and leans back to work on his tan. Learning Jamaican dance moves We hear music and a lot of laughter below and realize the trampoline is empty. I decide to leave my husband happily tanning and I follow the music only to discover a full-blown dance class, as the crew is teaching everyone the latest Jamaican dancehall dance moves. Although I feel a little self-conscious when I join in, that quickly fades away as everyone tries their best to match the expertise of the crew. Over on the right, two little girls have their own crew member showing them what to do and they catch on quickly, delighted grins lighting up their faces. I manage to muddle through and I’m pretty sure my sister is going to show these videos to everyone once we get back home for an evening full of a similar level of laughter at my expense. In that moment though, I don’t care. I feel the salt from the sea drying on my skin, my hair is a tousled mess and I’m dancing with my children in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. This, I think, is what happiness is.

First Sunreef 88 double deck catamaran launched

The first hull in the Sunreef 88 range of double deck sailing catamarans has been launched in Gdansk for a European owner, the Polish yard has announced.

This fully personalised multihull superyacht measures 26.82 metres LOA and was styled inside and out by the in-house team at  Sunreef Yachts .

In a statement, the Polish yard added that the design of the Sunreef 88 is “a great display of the shipyard’s non-conformist attitude and a genuine example of an avant-garde sailing catamaran concept”.

Captain Ian Sellers added: "She is a beautifully crafted, fully customised transoceanic catamaran, with superb quality and finish."

The design brief was focussed on three key themes: luxury, performance and privacy. To this end, the Sunreef 88 features more than 300 square metres of living space — an impressive figure for a yacht of this size, proving that bigger isn't always better .

This two-deck sailing yacht will feature an extensive flybridge with a central helm station and plenty of al fresco dining and relaxation spaces. Back aft, the cockpit features a central dining table with seating space for ten guests as well as a second sunbed, making good use of the Sunreef 88's 11.2 metre beam.

The in-house design includes sporty and dynamic exterior lines, as well as a fully customised interior layout. Key features include a mezzanine level in the saloon and a main-deck owner's cabin , which boasts superb views out to sea through panoramic windows.

Auxiliary power comes from a pair of 425hp engines drawing on a total fuel capacity of 8,000 litres, while her total sailplan is in excess of 345 square metres.

Sunreef added that the designers drew inspiration for this single-masted sailing yacht from the 35 metre flagship yacht Che , which was launched in 2010. The Sunreef 88 is the sixth superyacht from the Polish yard, which has also created the Sunreef 102 yacht Ipharra .

The irreverent period piece (“Dickinson,” “Our Flag Means Death”) has flourished in recent years, but “Mary & George” most resembles the 2018 Yorgos Lanthimos movie “The Favourite,” another account of an English monarch’s same-sex attraction with an equally jaundiced view of human nature. (Olivia Colman’s Oscar-winning Queen Anne was, in fact, James’ great-granddaughter, their reigns each bookending the country’s Stuart dynasty.) After succeeding the childless Elizabeth I to become the nation’s first Scottish king, James has sealed himself inside a bubble of profligate hedonism, preferring his court to be a place of “peace and play.” “He forgets himself to his own indulgences,” one courtier observes — leaving James vulnerable to the influence of those who can attract and hold his fickle attention. 

Naturally, Moore is formidable, acing an English accent and exhibiting an adroit sense of comic timing. (When leaving the room after making a drunken scene, Mary is asked where she’s going. “To strategically vomit,” she declares.) But it’s Galitzine who gets the more dynamic role, sandwiched into a breakout year between “Red, White & Royal Blue” and the upcoming “The Idea of You.” Both of those movies are more conventional romantic comedies; here, Galitzine gets a darker edge and the space to show said darkness’ development over time. George begins the show as a lovestruck boy caught up with a servant and ends it as the first Duke of Buckingham, a seasoned and cynical operator who’s transcended the part of royal side piece. Galitzine sells both incarnations with equal conviction, and all the gradations in between as George gradually adopts his mother’s ultra-pragmatic view of the world.

Mary and George may give the show its name, but it’s James who provides its erratic center, the unstable sun around whom everyone else must revolve: his wife Anne (Trine Dyrholm) and son Charles (Samuel Blenkin); pious Chief Justice Edward Coke (Adrian Rawlins) and scheming adviser Francis Bacon (Mark O’Halloran); George and his initial rival for James’ affections, the jealous Earl of Somerset (Laurie Davidson). To guide James and the country in their chosen direction, and to advance their own self-interest, these figures square off and consolidate in ever-shifting combinations. Mary and George initially have a sponsor in Sir David Graham (Angus Wright), an Englishman who wants to reduce the influence of Scots like Somerset; when their incentives no longer align, Mary swiftly pivots to other partners. And as George comes into his own, he’s just as much a target of aspiring puppeteers as the king, an endless game of musical chairs with no constants except an underlying nihilism. 

Curran captivates as the mercurial sovereign, who veers between moments of lucidity and long stretches of what seems like madness, though it’s never identified as such. James bites into George’s arm without warning, bolts into a river during a paranoid episode and is generally prone to outbursts or locking himself in his chambers. James’ extremes set the mold for the strange, brutal-yet-genteel world of “Mary & George,” presided over by directors Oliver Hermanus, Alex Winckler and Florian Cossen with star turns from costume designer Annie Symons and production designer Helen Scott. When George arrives in France, he walks right into an active orgy; when Mary conspires to marry off her mentally incapacitated eldest son John (Tom Victor) for the dowry, she has the bride-to-be seized with an armed crew of bandits. Late in the series, James and George make love in a royal bedchamber built entirely outside, with broad swaths of rich fabric draped over trees.

This perspective, maintained throughout and reinforced by its final scene, gives “Mary & George” a tragic air even at its most deliciously bawdy. The show’s queer themes are refreshingly matter-of-fact; Moore seems less interested in centering such relationships for their own sake than using them as a magnifier for the transactional world in which they take place. “I have lived a sane, tame life waiting for change,” Mary says. “But it does not come unless you grab opportunity by the hand and never let go.” Some opportunities are more pleasurable than others.

“Mary & George” premieres on Starz on April 5 at 9 p.m. ET, with remaining episodes airing weekly on Fridays.

Here’s some free legal advice to my good friend, Donald Trump. 

Use the Jesus defense. 

Trump, America’s premier crotch-grabbing Bible salesman, is going on trial this month in New York. He’s facing multiple felony charges of falsifying business records in order to secretly pay $130,000 to a porn star in the closing weeks of the 2016 presidential election. 

Trump’s canoodling with Stormy Daniels — whose filmography includes "Dual Air Bags," "Trailer Trash Nurses 6," and "Operation Desert Stormy" — was deemed to be potentially problematic to Trump’s performatively pious Christian base.

Especially since his wife was home with their infant son while he was dabbling in Stormy’s charms.

Donald Trump calls himself 'Modern Day Nelson Mandela'

Trump has auditioned various defenses for this well-documented, illegally constructed effort to keep Daniels quiet before the voters cast their ballots in that national election.

Trump amps up immigration fears: Trump calling immigrants cannibals is just a taste of what evil is in store.

First he said he didn’t know anything about the hush money payment. Then he said that happened too long ago to be prosecuted. Then he blamed it all on getting bad legal advice from his lawyers. 

Along the way, he tried unsuccessfully to keep his lawyer and Daniels from being allowed to testify against him.

Lately, he’s just claiming to be a victim of persecution.

And these persecution claims are just getting wilder as the trial approaches. He started out saying that he’s treated worse than Abraham Lincoln, who, let the record show, was killed in office. 

This month, he called himself the “Modern Day Nelson Mandela,” who spent 27 years in a South African prison as a leader of the movement to end apartheid in that country.  

“Nobody has been treated like Trump, in terms of badly,” Trump said last month.

Lincoln and Mandela are top-tier victims for sure, but if Trump’s willing to go that far, he might as well go straight to the top.

Blame it all on Jesus. 

Trump should try the Jesus defense

In “terms of badly,” you can’t beat the treatment of Jesus. And Trump’s already halfway there: He has entertained notions that he is a Jesus figure walking among us.

Earlier this month, he reposted a social media comment from one of his supporters that made the Trump-Jesus connection , pointing out that his prosecution in the New York case coincides with Holy Week, the week that led to Christ’s crucifixion.

“It’s ironic that Christ walked through His greatest persecution the very week they are trying to steal your property from you,” the supporter wrote him, while referring to a Psalm.

“With words of hatred they surround me: they attack me without cause,” it begins. 

“Beautiful, thank you!” Trump responded.

It’s time for Trump to take this to the next logical step. All earthly defenses have fallen short. Trump needs to go Full Metal Jesus. 

So, here’s my advice to him.

If he cracked open those Lee Greenwood, rock-bottom-remainder Bibles he’s selling for $60 a whack to his gullible flock, he’d discover there’s a key character in the New Testament named Mary Magdalene. 

Trump, ditch the King James Bible. What about the King Donald version?

She shows up about a dozen times in the Gospels and was one of the few people present at the crucifixion and the first witness to the resurrection two days later.

Who was Mary Magdalene?

There’s a strain of speculation that Mary Magdalene was Jesus’ wife but that’s widely disputed and not as popular as the notion that she may have been a sex worker who was cured of the “seven demons” by Jesus and then became one of Jesus’ most fervent disciples.

Mary Magdalene, described as a wretched sinner, showed up at a banquet, fell on Jesus’ feet and used her tears and long hair to clean his feet and anoint him with her ointment.

That was the beginning of her journey to sainthood, the Bible says.

I’m not sure if there was any foot business involved in the Trump-Stormy anointment during their first golf-club encounter but there’s clearly enough of a parallel narrative that can be exploited here by Trump.

Trump can point out that if the technology were different back in Biblical times, Mary Magdalene might have starred in such videos as Nazareth Nurses Gone Wild , Bethlehem Manger-a-trois or Pizza Delivery on the Mount before meeting a savior who brought her promptly to her knees and changed her life.

By sticking to a Jesus defense, Trump could argue that his intimate encounter with Stormy Daniels wasn’t a cheap act of sexual gratification but a holy mission to cleanse Stormy of her demons.

And that prosecuting him for this holy act of religious purpose is an attack on Christianity, and an infringement on his Constitutional right to practice his religion without government interference.

Trump has already laid the groundwork for this during his online Bible sales pitch.

“Religion and Christianity are the biggest things missing from this country,” he said while hawking the Bibles. “I truly believe that we need to bring them back and we have to bring them back fast.”

Yes, real fast. I'd say, in terms of bigly, by opening statements in his porn-star trial next week.

The first time that Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead shot a scene together, they were in a bathtub, mostly naked. McGregor, in a maximally unflattering wig, was sticking his gut out as far as it would go.

“You were just trying to be as grotesque as you could be,” Winstead said affectionately.

This was on a recent afternoon in the chilly basement of a midtown hotel where McGregor and Winstead perched on a love seat, his jacket over his shoulders, his hand on her knee. They met in 2017, on the set of the third season of “Fargo,” co-starring as Ray Stussy, a hapless parole officer, and Nikki Swango, his grifter sweetheart. (McGregor also played Emmit Stussy, Ray’s twin.) Two years later, in 2019, they filmed “Birds of Prey” but did not share scenes. They are also both participants in the “Star Wars” franchise — McGregor in the ’90s and ’00s films and the more recent “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series, Winstead in “Ahsoka” — though again they did not share scenes. In 2021, Winstead gave birth to their son. The next year, they married.

Now, they have reunited onscreen for “A Gentleman in Moscow,” which premiered Friday on Paramount+ and debuts Sunday on Showtime. An adaptation of Amor Towles’s novel, it stars McGregor as Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, a mustached aristocrat sentenced to house arrest in a luxury hotel in the years following the Russian Revolution. Winstead appears as Anna Urbanova, an actress and the count’s sometimes girlfriend. Somehow, in the confines of the hotel, they make a life.

In an hourlong conversation, in a hotel somewhat more modest than Moscow’s Metropol, they discussed claustrophobia, facial hair and the benefits and detriments of working with a spouse. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

How did you get involved with “A Gentleman in Moscow”?

EWAN MCGREGOR It came to me first. I loved the grand nature of the drama, the love and loss and romance. I feel like it’s rarer and rarer to get a chance to play that stuff. At the heart of it, it’s about a man who’s learning to be a husband and learning to be a dad and crawling out of his ideas of the aristocratic way of life to find who he really is.

MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD You had hinted, cheekily, that there was a great female character in there. Reading the book, I just thought, ‘Oh my God, what a great, juicy opportunity that would be to play her.’ But I was very tentative because the last thing I wanted was to try to win a role and then have somebody think I was trying to get something out of being married to you. I just wanted to quietly say, “I think it’s a great role if you think I’m right for it.”

Did you ever worry that it would feel claustrophobic, shooting in these few hotel rooms?

MCGREGOR It had to feel like that. It should feel like that. It focuses a magnifying glass on these characters.

WINSTEAD That’s one of the great things about confined spaces. As an actor, it’s exciting because there’s nowhere to go but into the words. It’s great to know that’s going to be the focus, rather than pyrotechnics.

Did you grow your own mustache?

MCGREGOR I had to. I couldn’t have a stuck-on mustache. I’ve had them in the past and they’re terrible to wear. You come in in the morning, you’ve had to shave and then you put glue on that shaved skin, which is [expletive] horrible. Then you stick it on and it stops you from moving your face. The last thing you want to be thinking about when you’re acting is not moving. So I grew my own.

During the strike, I didn’t know when we’d be going back, so I just grew a beard around it. Because you don’t want a mustache in your real life. I mean, you do if you like mustaches, but I don’t.

Tell me about Alexander.

MCGREGOR He’s an aristocrat. He enjoyed the high life of his class at that time. Then it’s taken away during the revolution. He’s allowed to live, but the rest of his class is destroyed. So he’s somewhat lost.

And what about Anna? Is she a good actress?

WINSTEAD Anna believes that she is. I do think she takes it very seriously. It’s something positive in her life that gives her a sense of purpose. She does hang in there, even if she’s not always a star. That has to count for something.

They have a superb meet-cute, when the count tames Anna’s Russian wolfhounds. What’s their initial attraction?

WINSTEAD I instantly find him very intriguing. The way that he handles my dogs, it sparks a little something. Our repartee makes me further intrigued. Then hearing about him and knowing that he’s imprisoned in this hotel, the mystery is interesting to me as a woman who gets bored very easily by most men that I’m around. Over time, that leads to much, much more.

It’s so lovely how much time it takes. It’s many years into their relationship before they realize they’re in love. There’s something beautiful about that slow progression. Especially for Anna. She resists that feeling. But it hits her like a wave.

I understand that you didn’t know each other before “Fargo.” But Mary, is it true that you had a crush on him as a teenager?

WINSTEAD The thing is, if you were a teenager when “Trainspotting” and “Moulin Rouge” came out, I don’t think you could not have an awareness. But I didn’t have any posters on my wall. I wasn’t writing his name in my notebook.

Good, that would be creepy. What was it like working together on “Fargo”?

WINSTEAD We loved it.

MCGREGOR We did. It was amazing writing. I feel like there were two shows because I played the two characters. But our story line was amazing. To play Ray and Nikki, what a great pair, what a great partnership, what a great oddball couple.

WINSTEAD I remember meeting with Noah [Hawley, the showrunner] and my only question was, “Does she really love him?” And he was like, “Yes.” And that made it so much more interesting, to play a grifter with a heart, as cheesy as that sounds. So much more fun to have something real at the center of it.

Mary, earlier you alluded to a downside of working together, in that people might think you were offered a role for reasons other than your talent.

WINSTEAD Of course, there’s always going to be one person on the internet who makes that comment, but I’m secure enough to not worry about that because I know the truth, which is that people want to work with me. When we were first together, I was up for a role in something that he was in. They were worried we would bring some sort of drama to the set, which we thought was very funny because we’re not very dramatic people. But you have to let time deal with that. Now it’s clear that we’re a pretty levelheaded couple, that we’re not going around smashing vases. Other than that, it’s really been just upsides, which is that people who know us and like our work are happy and excited to put us together occasionally, which is a really lucky thing for us.

MCGREGOR There’s no downside in terms of actually doing it. It’s only great to go to work together, get to work together, come home together. It’s as good as it could be, really.

What was it like working together this time?

MCGREGOR It made it so much more fun to play all the cold-shoulder stuff at the beginning of the story. After they’ve spent the night together, she won’t speak to him or look at him.

WINSTEAD Then the later stuff, when things get deep, it was very emotional. I can’t talk about it without crying. It was just all there, which is an amazing thing. It’s just like, Oh, I’m here in front of my partner. So I’ll just let all those feelings wash over.

Did you like him with that mustache?

WINSTEAD You know, I did. I did for a long time. But I did start to miss his face underneath it.

Will you work together again?

WINSTEAD I don’t know.

MCGREGOR (simultaneously) Yes!

WINSTEAD We hope so. It’s just about finding the right beautiful thing.

NPR's Mary Louise Kelly talks with Sam McAlister, who persuaded Prince Andrew to go on record about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. It's the subject of new movie: Scoop.

MARY LOUISE KELLY, HOST:

The big get. In media lingo, that means the interview with the person at the center of a big story. Think Monica Lewinsky after her affair with then-President Clinton or the actor Alec Baldwin after the cinematographer was shot and killed on the set of his movie or Britain's Prince Andrew after his friend Jeffrey Epstein was arrested on sex trafficking charges. Now, interviews like these can entail months of negotiations, calls and emails and meetings to persuade that person to go on the record. That is what happened in 2019, when BBC journalist Emily Maitlis sat down with Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, at Buckingham Palace. Then-BBC "Newsnight" booker Sam McAlister had spent almost a year talking to Prince Andrew's private secretary and the prince himself. Her efforts and the resulting interview are dramatized in the new Netflix film "Scoop."

(SOUNDBITE OF FILM, "SCOOP")

RUFUS SEWELL: (As Prince Andrew) I have a lot of people telling me that it's a mistake, me even being in this room.

BILLIE PIPER: (As Sam McAlister) And yet here you are. And I can promise you one thing. You can't turn it around by staying silent.

KELLY: That's the actress Billie Piper playing Sam McAlister. The real Sam McAlister joins us now. Hi there.

SAM MCALISTER: Hi there. It's very meta. I'm not sure who's real and who's Billie anymore, to be honest. Thank you for having me.

KELLY: So your task was not only landing the interview, talking the palace, talking the prince into doing this but talking them into doing a serious news interview where they would not be able to vet or control the questions in any way. Walk us through the argument that persuaded them. What did you say?

MCALISTER: Well, there's a double argument, right? Here is a man who used to be effectively a national hero in the United Kingdom. He was, you know, the beloved son of the Queen, her favorite son by all accounts, a war hero. And now he was effectively a problem prince at best. And then, on the more pretentious level, of course, there was a view of Prince Andrew about him and his behaviors and the allegations against him, which, of course, he strenuously denies. But it was a double opportunity - a human opportunity to return to the life he had and a royal opportunity to basically restore his reputation in some ways. So I feel it was those two things that made this really a dream opportunity, at least on paper, for him.

KELLY: Was there a moment in the negotiations where you could tell, I got him? Like, that just landed. He's going to do it.

MCALISTER: There was a moment where I thought we might have him. The last negotiation is face to face with Prince Andrew...

SEWELL: (As Prince Andrew) Hello, everyone. I hope you don't mind. I brought someone along.

CHARITY WAKEFIELD: (As Princess Beatrice) Hello.

SEWELL: (As Prince Andrew) You know my daughter Beatrice.

MCALISTER: ...And a surprise guest, his daughter Princess Beatrice in Buckingham Palace. I mean, you can imagine how overwhelming that was. It was about two hours long. I felt we had a rapport. Emily, the presenter, was also there and Stuart McLean, who was the deputy editor. And at that moment of rapport, there's a moment of peril, and there's a moment of chance. And I said something quite bold. I told him the truth, which was always my style, that he was known as Randy Andy.

PIPER: (As Sam McAlister) You know how people see you; don't you?

SEWELL: (As Prince Andrew) Why don't you spell it out?

PIPER: (As Sam McAlister) Randy Andy, Air Miles Andy. This is sex and girls and planes and private islands and money. And with respect, the public see these stories. And they think, yeah, I can believe that.

MCALISTER: And that moment is really where he's going to laugh. And he knows that we have integrity and trust and we're honest with him, or he's going to slam the door in our face. Now, luckily it was the former. But you never, ever know if someone's going to say yes until you get that final call.

PIPER: (As Sam McAlister) This isn't bad for your brand. This is your brand.

SEWELL: (As Prince Andrew) With respect (laughter). Well, you sort of got a point.

KELLY: So you get the yes. The interview is taking place. The prince's answers are sounding increasingly tone-deaf. Let me put it that way. And you can see the actors playing you and the prince's private secretary just keep shooting looks at each other. It is deeply uncomfortable. Let's listen.

GILLIAN ANDERSON: (As Emily Maitlis) She was very specific about that night. She described dancing with you and you profusely sweating.

SEWELL: (As Prince Andrew) There's a slight problem with the sweating because I have a peculiar condition, which is that I don't sweat. Or, rather, I didn't sweat at the time.

KELLY: Sam McAlister, take me to that room. Where are you, and what is going through your mind?

MCALISTER: Oh, my gosh. So I'm about 15 feet behind him. And I used to be a criminal lawyer, and I used to represent people accused of all kinds of things. And one of the great skills of that world is poker face. And thank goodness for poker face - 15 feet behind those incredible answers, trying not to show any emotion, trying not to communicate any panic or fear or consternation. And all I can see is the back of his head. So I saw the front of him for the first time when it went out a couple of days later. But it really was a masterclass in how to give terrible answers and, from my tiny perspective, a small, personal masterclass in showing no emotion whatsoever on your face for an hour - one of the longest hours in television history, I would say.

KELLY: I mean, was there a moment where you're thinking, oh, my God, this is just going completely off the rails?

MCALISTER: I think it was almost every moment. It was like building. And after the first answer, which was his mildest answer, every line was a news line.

ANDERSON: (As Emily Maitlis) But you were staying at the house of a convicted sex offender.

SEWELL: (As Prince Andrew) It was a convenient place to stay.

MCALISTER: Just watching them kind of pile on top of one another over and over.

SEWELL: (As Prince Andrew) I don't think there was anything wrong then. I don't remember meeting her at all. I do not remember a photograph being taken. Do I regret the fact that he's quite obviously conducted himself in a manner unbecoming?

ANDERSON: (As Emily Maitlis) Unbecoming? He was a sex offender.

SEWELL: (As Prince Andrew) Yes. I'm sorry. I was being polite. I mean...

MCALISTER: It was really journalistically, obviously, the highlight of my career and quite an extraordinary experience.

KELLY: Well, the fallout, the consequences from this interview were almost immediate. Just a few days afterward, Prince Andrew stepped back from royal duties. Did you have a sense, even as the interview was unfolding, like, this is going to have just extraordinary consequences?

MCALISTER: I knew it was huge. I'm not going to lie. I knew how consequential it was in theory. But the idea that it would topple a member of the royal family, effectively, you know, sacked by his own mother and we'd still be talking about it, let alone that I would have the opportunity of this incredible movie - it would have sounded like I was drunk if I'd said that to you. So I knew it was a scoop, but I just did not know it was the scoop of scoops.

KELLY: If you were still in that job, who's the big get you would be trying to get on the line today?

MCALISTER: Putin 100%. There's a different type of journalism that the BBC is lucky enough to do, which is without fear and without favor. And I think this film is an homage to that type of journalism and to the type of people that do that type of journalism. And, you know, I feel that if we had the opportunity to interview President Putin, he would be treated exactly the same as everyone that we interviewed - without fear and without favor. And that's rare, and that's why journalism is so important.

KELLY: Well, I will share. I just re-upped my interview request to President Putin this week, and I can assure you, President Putin and Kremlin colleagues, if you're listening, that you would indeed be treated with professionalism. And I completely, 100% agree with you. That's the big get. Sam McAlister, this has been a pleasure. Thank you so much.
