Planning a party? Kerry Packer’s famous $100million ice-breaking luxury yacht Arctic P is now available for hire by the public

  • Yacht owned by late tycoon is available to hire
  • The $100million boat is moored in France
  • Now owned by his daughter, Gretel

Australian media tycoon Kerry Packer's modified $100million icebreaker yacht, the Arctic P, will be hired out to the ultra-rich for this European summer.

Packer, who was Australia's richest man at the time of his death in late 2005, commissioned the specialised German-built yacht in 1969 and passed it down to his son, James.

However, Packer's daughter Gretel bought it from James in 2017 after the billionaire decided he wanted to upgrade to a $200million superyacht, the  Daily Telegraph reports.

It was said the Arctic P held a lot of sentimental value to Gretel but it seems the boat's $10million annual maintenance, crew and mooring bill has seen her decide to rent it out.

The boat has been put up for hire on luxury rental website CharterWorld and is currently moored in Antibes, France.

Arctic P is a whopping 88m long and can carry 12 passengers as well as a 25-strong crew.

The 1,444-tonne yacht's hefty build was specially designed to help Kerry Packer's sea-sickness, which did not affect his boating-mad father Sir Frank or his son James.

The Arctic P is actually designed to carry heavy cargo through the icy seas of Antarctica, resulting in less roll on the deck.

In the 1990s Packer told a shipyard crew in Malta to rig the unique yacht for maximum satellite TV coverage.

It was refitted again in 2008 in the years after Packer's death.

The Arctic P can reach a maximum speed of 22 knots thanks to two Deutz-MWM diesel engines and features a swimming pool.

Sources told the Telegraph last week that Gretel renting out the boat could be a sign she's looking to sell and downsize in the future.

After only a week at sea, Packer yacht crewman axed for being annoying

SACKED IT expert Nick Sangineto lifts the lid on James Packer's luxury super yacht Arctic P.

Not wanted ... Nicholas Sangineto on board the Arctic P.

Don't miss out on the headlines from News. Followed categories will be added to My News.

AS an employee on James Packer's Arctic P, you either sink or swim.

Canadian IT expert Nicholas Sangineto sank. And he is so disappointed at being kicked off the boat that he's lifted the lid on the secret world of the Packer super yacht, complete with a list of rules aimed at not upsetting the big boss.

The rules are clear: if you whinge you will walk the plank.

The gambling and media tycoon has banned "negativity" on the 88m converted ice-breaker. New crew, required to sign confidentiality agreements, are handed a two-page copy of ship guidelines.

The guidelines explain that the needs of the ship's billionaire owner are "often very demanding".

If crew members act "negatively" or "complain", they can be immediately dismissed by the skipper.

"The Boss is extremely private - the movement and operation of the yacht should not be discussed with anyone ... if this concerns you in any way or you are inclined to gossip, do not join," the document said.

"Anyone having 'that's not my job' type attitude is asked to leave, making way for someone having a team approach."

Mr Sangineto, who was hired through a shipping agency, survived a week on board the Arctic P.

He travelled from Quebec to Auckland last month to work for Arctic P skipper Russell Pugh.

"I came to work as an electronics and IT analyst," Mr Sangineto said.

"They flew me out but after a few days onboard I was told that my services were no longer required because the crew did not like me and I wasn't fitting in."

The 36-year-old, who is currently unemployed, said he could not believe he had been fired so quickly.

"I am in shock that I travelled all that way and then they told me to pack my bags," Mr Sangineto said.

"I do not think I am annoying. They did not give me any proper reasons. I just do my job and they sack me. I can't believe a billionaire would act like that."

Mr Pugh said that he could not comment but denied that there had been any wrongdoing.

There are 38 crew members on the boat, who work on a three-month rotating roster.

The Arctic P, which is believed to be en route to Greece, adheres to the whims of the boss.

Crew come from the UK, New Zealand, Australia, Austria, Germany, Sri Lanka and India.

According to the strict guidelines, they cannot smoke cigarettes onboard or use recreational drugs.

The rank structure includes a skipper, chief mate, chief engineer, chief steward and head chef. Senior staff have private cabins.

More Coverage

The Arctic P was bought by Mr Packer's late father Kerry in 1995.

The family spent $20 million upgrading the work vessel into a luxury toy, complete with a cinema, helipad and swimming pool.

In 2006, US magazine Power And Motor Yacht listed Arctic P as the 15th largest private vessel in the world.

Arctic and Oceanic

kerry packer yacht arctic p

  • Add to quote

Oceanic was built in 1969 and is still operated by Bugsier Reederei which at one time was one of the largest tugboat companies in the world (second to Smit Rotterdam). The Arctic, sistership, was built in 1970 and modified in 1994. She is now called Arctic-P and is owned by Gary Packer who is Australia's richest man. He converted the vessel into a very luxurious yacht and she surely must be the weirdest looking mega yacht in the world. The pictures show the vessel during her docking in Auckland in 1997 although I did a very thorough inspection 2 years prior to that in same drydock after she grounded then due to costs involved she was then repaired in Singapore. Horse power just under 20.000 and GRT now stands at 2160. The picture with details (even more details are available in case anybody is interested) was given to me by the ch. off. in 1975 and is arguably the last original data sheet left of what once one of the mightiest of them all. "blue antifouling appears on this vessel as without antifouling you don't come far"

She used to spend a fair amount of time in the Sydney region in past years but now seems to have gone walkabout more, certainly looks well cared for but certainly not quite the antithesis of a millionaires yacht!!.

Oceanic is still working for Bugsier, she was in Hamburg in June 2004 and looked in pristine condition, she then went and lay off the coast near Cuxhaven for a while waiting for salvage work I presume.

There's a very similar private yacht by the name of 'Lone Ranger', also converted from a deepsea tug.

Lone Ranger I crewed on Lone Ranger... linky

Oceanic & Arctic were laid-up (but in a controlled situation, with appropriate seals, air conditioning, etc) when the bottom dropped out of their market niche. Arctic sold but Oceanic retained. Then the Donaldson Report happened and in the wake of it the German Government initiated an ETV service. They had special ships built but in the intermediate time chartered Oceanic with suitable crew. When the new boats were delivered, Oceanic still remained the better choice and has been on charter ever since. Regards - Job (TugDoc)

Beautiful picture. I still cannot find my pictures from the first docking in Auckland, NZ. It now looks they went back to red Antifouling as I already advised at the time. Although it could just be a stripe of red Antifouling only as was the case before. They insisted on blue Antifouling and received a lousy quality which did not work as can also be seen on my pictures of the second drydocking in Devonport (Auckland, NZ). Although the vessel officially is called ARCTIC-P , then it is clear they do not show the -P on the bow. Jan

Hi Ruud. Never seen something like this on a ship before. The "P' stands for the surname of the "Owner" Gary Packer. Thanks Jan

NOW! tyhats what I called a Tug. would have given my left arm to have sailed on her. need the right arm for holding my glass ... LOL

Prost, Ruud - a picture speaks a thousand words. Classic!!! Appreciate your sense of humour. Jan - think you must mean Kerry Packer. As if someone who has a helicopter pilot who donates him a kidney needs a tug to 'pull' anything! John T.

Bugsier were a very fine company to work with and no doubt they still are. I remember being in Bugsier's office (Johannisbollwerk 10, Hamburg) in the Seventies when the ARCTIC was running bollard pull tests in Cuxhaven after a modification (I think it was the fitting of Kort nozzles). Captain Karl-Gunter Meyer, who was the General Manager, took a call from her Master (sorry, cannot remember who) which boiled down to, "Do you want the good news or the bad news?" "The good news is the bollard pull is now over "x" (sorry, cannot remember the figure) tons. "The bad news is we don't know exactly how much, because we pulled the quay wall down!"

Bugsier Fantastic to read that the Oceanic is still in service. I was Operations manager at CANMAR in Calgary Canada when we chartered both the Arctic and Oceanic to tow the SSDC MAT from Japan to the Beaufort Sea up around Point Barrow. They were fantastic ships and did the job working in heavy ice with our icebreakers and became part of the "team" that set the structure down on site. I recall it all very well and have some movies it as I was also the project manager on site. Crews were great, we delivered their mail etc to them while on tow by dropping it out of the plane as we flew over the large tow just south of Pt, Barrow. We also sent Ice Maps which was the official reason for the flight !!! cant recall the shore captains name but a great guy who smoked an array of cigars and pipes all the time but was a great help to me on the complex job we had in hand. We had a real party aboard Arctic when the job was done....ouch my head still hurts. A real professional bunch of men and it was an honour to have worked with them all. I stll have on mt desk the house flag on its wooden stand...

There is a book out on it it is german Tug converted to a yacht i have read the book

Book Yes, Lone Ranger crew members past and present, myself included, recieved a limited edition presented by the then owner Peter Lewis. An interesting read.

Hello, Bugsier has sold the OCEANIC (IMO 6901490 /GL 5207) 1st of july 2013 to the Karadeniz Powership Osman Bey Co. Ltd. which part of the Karadeniz Holding Group (Turkey). Management is Ata Tug & Salvage Inc: http://www.atasalvage.com New Name: OSMAN KHAN Call Sign: D5EN6 MMSI: 636016116 Flag Liberia Anyone seen the vessel after being sold as OSMAN KHAN in her new colors (with black mast + funnel )? Are any photos available (current photos on shipspotting + marinetraffic with "Bugsier outfit" are well known)? Thx for any kind of help which is really appreciated! Best regards Jan

Mariah Carey holidays on Arctic P

International pop star Mariah Carey treated her children to a luxury yacht vacation aboard Arctic P in Capri this week and took to Instagram to show the world how much they were enjoying it. Carey posted two pictures to the social media site – one showing her son Moroccan using a pair of binoculars to spy on neighbouring yachts and another showing the singer playing with her daughter Monroe.

Carey and her children are due to set sail to Cannes and St Tropez after leaving Capri and are joined on board by Arctic P’s owner, billionaire businessman James Packer. Packer, who is rumoured to be the singer’s new boyfriend, inherited the 88 metre yacht from his father, the media mogul Kerry Packer, in 2005.

Arctic P has just undergone an extensive and luxurious refit so Packer is no doubt keen to show her off to his new love interest. Taking seven months to complete, she now has a redesigned beach club with a Jacuzzi, swimming pool and dining table, all of which can be raised and lowered so the space can be used for entertaining. The pools are also separated from the rest of the deck space by railings – a feature installed thanks to Packer’s concern for young children, like Carey’s, who often stay on board the yacht.

Arctic P also offers accommodation for 12 guests and 25 crew and, when not being used for Mediterranean cruises, is a capable explorer yacht. She won the Voyager’s Award at the World Superyacht Awards 2015 and holds the record for the furthest south a yacht has ever been .

Billionaire's superyacht refit big boost for Auckland

Australian billionaire James Packer has brought his 87.5-metre superyacht Arctic P to Auckland for a refit that could mean upwards of $10 million for the local economy.

The giant vessel - the 50th largest yacht in the world - is berthed at Wynyard Quarter where it is expected to stay for at least six months.

The arrival of Packer's yacht is a blessing for the Auckland marine industry after losing the $50 million refit of billionaire Graeme Hart's superyacht to Whangarei.

The Packer vessel, which has hosted celebrities such as Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in the past, has been hanging about Auckland ports since October.

Industry insiders confirmed this week it had been moved to Wynyard Quarter for a refit, its first since 2008.

Packer this week opened up in an emotional television interview about the last words from his father, Australian media mogul Kerry Packer, from who he inherited the yacht upon his death in 2005.

Details of the work to the vessel have been kept confidential but research on superyacht refits suggests Arctic P will result in a multimillion-dollar benefit for Auckland.

It is likely to be a smaller project than the refit of the 77-metre yacht Weta - known as U77 - owned by Hart, New Zealand's richest man.

Weta was towed to Port Nikau in Northland last week after local firm Culham Engineering was believed to have offered a better deal for what is reportedly the largest yacht refit the country has seen.

Hart's superyacht had been in Auckland for more than a year and those in the marine industry are keeping mum on the reasons behind his decision to have it finished in Whangarei, where the port has been dredged to accommodate the large vessel.

Whangarei councillor Brian McLachlan, who praised Culham Engineering for luring the Weta refit, said he understood Hart's decision to be based on where he could get the most cost-effective work.

Drury-based Nautical Contracting had been working on the Weta while it was in Auckland and last reported in February last year that its work was continuing.

The company's website said "2011 was a tough year in the global superyacht industry and for the boatbuilding scene in New Zealand. But we are pleased to say there are encouraging signs for the year ahead".

Nautical Contracting managers would not comment on the Weta's move north this week.

Refurbishing superyachts was a lucrative industry for Auckland, NZ Marine Industry Association executive director Peter Busfield said.

Research by NZ Marine has found a typical refit for a 40m yacht resulted in $5m spent in the industry and another $1m spent on tourism in the city hosting the owners, representatives, guests and crew.

Auckland has about a 90 per cent share of the superyacht refit business in New Zealand, and the cost of a refit can vary from $1m up to $30m.

Mr Busfield said there were efforts to double the number of superyacht refits being done in New Zealand over the next three years.

"Only cities that have a highly skilled marine industry workforce and special marine facilities such as we have in Auckland can hope to attract this international business," Mr Busfield said.

"Of the 7000 superyachts internationally we believe that 1000 of these are wishing for, or are due for, a refit.

"New Zealand attracts approximately 25 refits per year and with [New Zealand Trade and Enterprise] assistance we have a strategy ... to entice more than double this number over the next three years."

Mr Busfield said superyachts were normally attracted to New Zealand as a cruising destination and then later becoming aware of the world-class workmanship the local marine industry provides.
