LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A power boat crashed into a jetty in Southern California, killing one man and injuring 10 other people, officials said.

The Long Beach Fire Department responded to reports around 9:20 p.m. on Wednesday that a 48-foot (15-meter) boat had crashed into the Alamitos Bay jetty, officials said Thursday.

Capt. Jack Crabtree, of the Long Beach Fire Department, said speed was likely a factor, with initial estimates indicating the boat was traveling at roughly 40 mph (64 kph), the Los Angeles Times reported .

All 10 people who were injured were taken to hospitals.

No other information was released and the investigation is ongoing.

A jetty is a long, narrow structure that extends from shore into water.

Swan Boat Club driver bound over for trial after having 0.18 blood alcohol result

jemasa yacht accident

Monroe — A woman who drove her car into a boat club in April, killing two children and injuring 11 others, was bound over for trial Thursday after testimony in her preliminary exam showed she had a blood alcohol level that was twice the legal limit and had told police that she shouldn't be driving.

One of the spectators in the crowded courtroom yelled "yes" when 1st District Court Judge Michael Brown found that prosecutors had provided enough evidence to bind over all charges against Marshella Chidester, 66, of Newport.

Chidester is charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of operating under the influence of alcohol causing death and four counts of operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious injury. She faces up to life in prison if convicted.

The decision came Thursday afternoon after Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy Steven Schmidt testified earlier that Chidester had a blood alcohol level of 0.18. The legal limit in Michigan is 0.08, and the state super drunk definition is 0.17.

Ken Laurain, assistant prosecuting attorney for Monroe County, declined to discuss the judge's decision, while Chidester's attorney, Bill Colovos, said he looked forward to proving her innocence. He said during an earlier arraignment that Chidester drank a single glass of wine and her impairment was caused by seizures.

"When the medical records come out, you'll see about the seizures," Colovos told The Detroit News on Thursday.

After the crash at Swan Boat Club on April 20, Chidester smelled like alcohol and had trouble maintaining her balance, testified Sgt. Michael Bomia, who was the first deputy on the scene. In a field sobriety test, she recited the alphabet correctly but had trouble focusing on the deputy's finger and counting backward from 100, Bomia said.

Chidester, responding to questions from another deputy at the crash site, said she shouldn’t be driving and rated her drunkenness at 7 on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being highly drunk. She said she had been drinking wine 30 minutes before the crash and was on medication for seizures.

"I wouldn't want to drive," she told another deputy, Schmidt, after he asked whether she should be driving.

Chidester told Schmidt that she didn’t remember what happened, according to Thursday's testimony.

“I pulled into the parking lot,” she told Schmidt, according to a video played during the hearing. “I thought I was driving up to the boat club. Evidently, I was driving right into the building.”

“You don’t remember what happened?” Schmidt asked.

“You know what, I have these seizures,” she said.

The crash killed 8-year-old Alanah Phillips and her 4-year-old brother, Zayn Phillips. Their mother, Mariah Dodds, and another sibling were among the injured.

Defense lawyer challenges video

Chidester is a former commodore at the boat club, which is located off Swan Creek near Lake Erie. It’s a membership-based organization that hosts holiday parties and other events, and provides docking space for members who own boats, according to its website.

Colovos argued against showing the video of Chidester, saying prosecutors hadn't directly proved she had been read her Miranda rights. The prosecutor indicated the rights had been given, but Colovos said the prosecution needed to produce the officer who read Chidester her rights before the video of her interview could be introduced. The judge let the video be shown after he was assured the Miranda rights had been administered.

During the Thursday hearing, another video showed Chidester getting into her car moments before the crash. The video, taken from a camera across the street from her home, shows her walking unsteadily from her home to her car.

Chidester quickly backed out of her driveway into the road and, while driving backward, swerved onto the shoulder of the road, according to the video. The camera momentarily loses view of her and then showed her driving frontward in the opposite direction toward the boat club, which is 500 feet from her home.

A neighbor had told police earlier that someone had rammed his car, pushing it into a fence, in the moments before the boat club crash. The video showed the collision, and a deputy testified Thursday that Chidester's car was involved in two crashes, the club and the car.

Dead children's mom testifies

Among the injured people who testified during the hearing Thursday was Dodds, the mother of the two children who died.

Dodds and her children were at a party at the boat club for the 3-year-old child of Dodds' friend, according to a Detroit law firm representing Dodds' family in a lawsuit against Chidester and the tavern where she reportedly was before the crash.

She said the only thing she remembered about the crash were the voices of several relatives. The relatives, who weren’t the two children who died, sounded far away, she said.

Her last memory before the accident was a happy one, Dodds said. She walking back to the table where her children were sitting and eating.

“I was laughing,” Dodds said.

Her next memory was waking up in a hospital room, where she remained for four days, she testified. One of her three children who survived was also hospitalized, she said.

Two months after the wreck, her son still needs more rehabilitation before he regains the ability to walk, Dodds said.

Videos show people screaming

During the hearing at 1st District Court in Monroe, Chidester’s attorney objected to the showing of several of the videos, arguing they weren't relevant. He said he had provided the county prosecutor's office with medical records about her condition.

Other videos played during the hearing showed the aftermath of crash, with people screaming while others scooped up children and fled the scene.

One video from the boat club showed a car traveling at a high rate of speed through the club's parking lot and then veering into the building at around 3 p.m. on April 20.

Another video showed people trying to clear debris and get to people trapped by the car against a wall. A child could be seen being pulled from behind a counter near where the car crashed.

"It was a chaotic scene," Bomia said.

In another scene, people could be seen pulling a woman from the floor, bloodied by the crash.

In a body-worn camera from a Monroe County sheriff's deputy, Chidester is shown sitting in a chair as the deputy arrives at the chaotic scene. Chidester was taken outside to the police car, where she answered questions.

Colovos said earlier that Chidester had blacked out from a seizure behind the wheel and didn’t remember the crash or anything leading up to it.

More: Aunt of siblings killed at party: 'We were supposed to be planning a birthday ... not a funeral'

Chidester suffers from neuropathy and has epileptic-like seizures in her legs, Colovos said earlier. She was hospitalized last fall after being treated for epileptic-type seizures in her legs, he said.

Two Metro Detroit medical experts told The Detroit News in May that the medical condition attributed to the woman may affect one's ability to drive, but the condition is not known for causing a loss of consciousness.

More: Medical experts weigh in on conditions attributed to driver in Swan Boat Club crash

Prosecutors said during an arraignment in April that Chidester drunkenly crashed her SUV into a boat club that was hosting a child's birthday party. They said she has had substance abuse issues. But Colovos said Chidester had no traffic tickets or police record.

Boat crash in Long Beach: Cell phone video shows aftermath of yacht hitting jetty

LONG BEACH, Calif. - New cell phone video obtained exclusively by FOX 11 shows the aftermath of a boat crash in Long Beach Wednesday night that left one person dead and 10 others injured.

It happened just before 9:30 p.m. at the Alamitos Bay Jetty. The Long Beach Fire Department got a call, reporting that a boat had crashed into the rocks and was taking on water.

"I saw the rocks and it flew up like that," said Angel Mendoza, a witness.

Cell phone video from the scene showed passengers on the boat being pulled from the wreckage as the boat continued to sink. Others were sitting on the rocks, bleeding, while the music on the boat continued to play.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Long Beach yacht crash leaves 1 dead, 3 critically hurt

Investigators said a total of 11 people were on board. One man was pronounced dead at the scene, the other 10 on board were hospitalized, three of those in critical condition.

"Everyone was bleeding and one guy, his body was just lying there, on the top of the [boat’s] dashboard," said Mendoza.

The man who died was described as being in his 40s or 50s. One friend told FOX 11 that the man worked in real estate.

The boat and debris were still in the water alongside the jetty as of Thursday evening, with several curious people making the walk out on the rocks to see it.

"You can see blood all over the rocks, a lot of blood," said Mike Mapstead. "It’s just senseless. [They were supposed] to be having a good time."

The boat was described as a 40-pleasure craft. The Long Beach Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard are still investigating the cause of the crash, but officials said speed was believed to be a contributing factor.

Whilst "quite innocently" endeavouring to determine the requirements of another Lloyd's registered and classed motor-yacht recently in terms of supplying them an approved "emergency towing-line", I came across this official accident report concerning the M/Y JEMASA . One death and 1 severely injured as a result... And I would seriously question the Cayman Islands final report / investigation / inspectors on a single point: that the M/Y JEMASA at the time was supposedly equipped with: All mooring ropes were Nylon Double Braid ropes of 56mm nominal diameter and with a minimum tensile strength of 805.1 kN. At least 1 killed, 10 injured in boat crash in Southern California

Friday, 05 Jul 2024

LOS ANGELES, July 4 (Xinhua) -- At least one person was killed and 10 others were injured Wednesday night after a boat crash in Southern Californian coastal city of Long Beach, authorities said on Thursday.

Members of the Long Beach Fire Department responded at approximately 9:21 p.m. Wednesday to reports of a 48-foot (about 14.6-meter) boat that had crashed into the Alamitos Bay jetty, said the department in a press release on its Facebook page.

"In total, 11 patients were involved in this incident. Unfortunately, there was one confirmed fatality," said the department, adding that "The remaining ten patients were transported to hospitals in the local area. Three patients were identified as critical."

The victim, only described as 40-50 years old, was declared dead aboard the ship, reported local KTLA television station.

It's unclear exactly what caused the pleasure boat to hit the rocks, but authorities told KTLA that speed was likely a factor.

Fatality in canyon of lodore.

|

Dinosaur, Colorado – The body of a 50-year-old man from Sandy, UT has been recovered after a rafting accident during a private permitted trip on the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument.   Around 4:00 pm on Thursday, June 27, monument staff were notified that a boat was pinned on a rock in the rapid named Hells Half Mile. One person from the group was missing and suspected to be pinned under the raft. The group was eventually able to unpin and secure the boat, but the person, now dislodged, unresponsive, and having lost his lifejacket, drifted downriver.  River Patrol Rangers were informed and initiated travel through the Canyon of Lodore by raft to intercept the group and conduct recovery efforts. Additional support traveled by car using the Echo Park Road. At 7:45 am on Friday, June 28, monument staff received information from Adrift, a commercial rafting company, that the victim’s body had been found and secured by guides approximately 10 river miles downstream from the location of the accident. With the assistance of Adrift guides, monument staff, and the Vernal-based Classic Air Medical helicopter crew, the victim’s body was transported to the Moffat County coroner. The rafter’s name will be withheld while family members are notified.  Dinosaur National Monument expresses appreciation for Classic, Adrift, River Runners Transport, Moffat County ACTSS (Advocates, Crisis, Trauma, and Survivor Services) and monument staff who assisted in search and recovery efforts, and offers condolences to the family and river community impacted by this incident. Additional background information: Hells Half Mile is a class III/IV rapid located on the Green River in the Canyon of Lodore in the Colorado portion (Moffat County) of Dinosaur National Monument. It is approximately 12 river miles downstream of the Gates of Lodore boat launch near the monument’s northern boundary. Flow rates for the Canyon of Lodore section of the Green River are influenced by the water release at Flaming Gorge Dam, which averaged 4700 cubic feet per second from June 25-28. Dinosaur National Monument consists of over 210,000 acres in both Colorado and Utah. While the monument is best known for the dinosaur quarry and the fossils preserved there, the monument also contains spectacular canyons along the Green and Yampa rivers. These rivers are famous among whitewater rafters who travel here from across the globe to raft them.

Long Beach boat crash leaves 1 dead, 10 taken to the hospital

By Danielle Radin

Updated on: July 4, 2024 / 4:37 PM PDT / KCAL News

One man died and 10 people were taken to the hospital after a boat crash in Long Beach Wednesday, according to the Long Beach Fire Department.

It happened in Alamitos Bay and paramedics responded at 9:21 p.m., said Jake Heflin, a fire department spokesperson. Lifeguards and firefighters who were assisting with the water rescue said the 48-foot boat crashed into the jetty off of Marina Way.

The man who died has not been identified but fire officials said is believed to have been around 40 to 50 years old.

There was a total of 11 people aboard and three were left in critical condition, fire officials said. Between four and five people had to be rescued from the boat and the rest were rescued from the jetty.

The night of the incident, fire officials said four people sustained serious injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation but authorities said speed is believed to be a possible factor.

"The yacht was traveling at a high rate of speed," said U.S. Coast Guard's Richard Uranga. "Don't know if it was also related to alcohol, because of the high rate of speed and it was at night."

Some people who visited the area Thursday for the Fourth of July said that there was a bittersweet feeling on the day after learning of the tragedy.

"It's certainly tragic when somebody loses their life at any time, but on a holiday it becomes a staple in your mind," said Hilliard Hampton, who was visiting the area from Michigan.

Australian teenager dies after tragic boating mishap

MY Jemasa is the largest of the vessels pictured in this photo taken yesterday.

PHUKET CITY: The parents of a 16-year-old Australian girl injured in a yacht accident last Wednesday took the decision to switch off her life support last night.

Miss Ali van Os, from Darwin, died in Bangkok Hospital Phuket at around 6 pm surrounded by family members.

She was hit in the head by a mooring rope tied to the “superyacht” MY Jemasa, which was berthed in Yacht Haven Marina in Mai Khao, Thalang disrict.

Miss van Os had rushed towards the 50-meter yacht to get a closer look after it docked, but when a crew member accidentally touched the throttle the enormous pleasure craft surged, causing the rope to snap.

Miss van Os was rushed to Bangkok Hospital Phuket in a coma and had lost a lot of blood. Subsequent tests showed her brain was no longer functioning.

Ali van Os had been on holiday in Phuket with family members, including her mother, author Joanne van Os, and father, Lex Silvester, a barrister.

Completed Hakvoort Yacht JeMaSa

With a length of 164′ (49.99m), the Hakvoort built JeMaSa has a split level sun deck to accommodate both a helicopter platform and a Jacuzzi.

To guarantee exceptional comfort levels, she is equipped with special stabilization-at-anchor systems. The interior is designed by Espen Oeino, Michela Reverberi and Barbara Barry.

M/Y JeMaSa is a twin screw ocean going motor yacht with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure. She has been designed to allow her decks to be enjoyed comfortably throughout the year in different climates. In warm weather the aft deck will be the ideal spot to relax in the shade of the upper deck. In strong winds or colder temperatures, however, it can be screened off on both sides and the entire deck can be enclosed.

Moran Yacht & Ship negotiated the build contract for JeMaSa, wrote the technical specifications and managed the entire build process for the vessel. Our team was by the owner’s side from concept well through completion.
