100 years of yachting at coronado yacht club, the coronado yacht club turns 100 and celebrates by unveiling old photos of yachting history on glorietta bay., joe ditler , neighbor.
Yacht Club Celebrates By Unveiling Historic Images at Opening Day CORONADO – The year 1913 introduced Richard Nixon and Jimmy Hoffa into the world. Headlines were filled with news of Suffragettes and Pancho Villa. But in tiny Coronado, still in its infancy, a yacht club was born – the Coronado Yacht Club. On Sunday, May 26, Coronado Yacht Club (CYC) will celebrate their 100th year and 82nd Opening Day. To celebrate the centennial of CYC, Commodore Rick Odiorne and his staff initiated a countywide search for old photos to help better explain the legacy of yachting in Coronado’s Glorietta Bay – home of the Coronado Yacht Club. “We’ve received a very warm response to our request to find pieces of our history,” said Odiorne. “Between area libraries and museums and old Coronado families, we’ve collected a number of visuals we had not seen before.” Telling one’s history is important. Like rowing a boat, you get where you’re going by looking where you’ve been. In the case of the Coronado Yacht Club, these missing images show ancient sailing craft, the first clubhouse, and early activities at the club and in the bay. The Coronado Public Library provided newspaper clippings of the time, and the Coronado Historical Association dug up old photos of early yachting and the beginnings of the Coronado Yacht Club. Local resident Michael O’Keefe shared his extensive family archive of photos and early yacht club events as well, and contributions are continuing to come in. “Perhaps the most important photo came from our own Coronado Historical Association,” said Odiorne. “It was a shot from the 1930s of the Coronado Boathouse 1887, our early headquarters. Hanging from the rail of the Boathouse is an early yacht club burgee. It’s a terrific photo and one we did not have in our possession.” On Opening Day, CYC will have numerous of these old images enlarged and on display for people to enjoy. Already the clubhouse is bursting with historical photographs and old film footage that has served to remind members and visitors of the wonderful history of the yacht club, and just how important a role it has played in the community. On this coast, yacht club opening days are symbolic. On the East Coast, where winter is an extreme deterrent to yachting, opening days mark the beginning of sailing season, and a time when boats are put back in the water sporting fresh paint and varnish. There is nothing quite like the pomp and circumstance of a yacht club opening day. On CYC’s Opening Day, all member vessels and the yacht club itself will be decorated with bright flags, bunting and streamers (and plenty of fresh varnish). Coronado Mayor Casey Tanaka will read a Proclamation on behalf of the City of Coronado, and awards will be presented for best boat and best dock. Blue blazers will be the dress of the day. The Coronado Yacht Club has been around since 1913, minus a few war years. During that time the club has become an integral part of Coronado society, a breeding ground for yachting champions and Olympic Gold Medalists, and a major part of Coronado’s history through such national and world altering events as the Roaring Twenties, Prohibition, two world wars and the Great Depression. The history of the yacht club includes thousands of regattas, and tens of thousands of visitors from Coronado’s Tent City and the Hotel del Coronado. Movie stars, such as Errol Flynn and William Holden, participated in local yachting, and the colorful Rainbow Fleet of multi-colored sloops in the 1930s was a familiar sight on the bay. The yacht club itself has had a few locations and headquarters over the past 100 years, including the historic Boathouse 1887. Recreational sailing began in San Diego Bay and Glorietta Bay in the early 20th century, as prosperous area businessmen would rent working fish boats on Sundays for heated competition. The fishing sloops were the fastest things on the water. They had to be, because the first boat to the fishing grounds and back got the best price at market. Their speed off the wind did not go unnoticed by a public eager to get on the water. We had our wedding here and the venue was great and right by the coronado bay. It was secluded so it was nice and peaceful. The venue had plenty of parking, had 2 side rooms to get ready in, a beautiful patio overlooking the water and a grassy area for the ceremony. The venue is very flexible and the staff was great. A big part of why we chose this was because of the manager Dan, he was straight forward, helpful, transparent and so nice .Velma and chef Liliana were amazing too!! The food was amazing and everyone raved about it for days. The portions exceeded everyone's expectations and all wished they could take it home! We had our wedding in Aug and the only thing I'd keep in mind is that it can get pretty hot in the reception area even with the doors open. Other than that, we loved having our weddings at the Cays and we're so happy with them.
"San Diego's LEAST-friendliest yacht club" I can not advocate enough to stay away. My wife and I have never been treated so poorly by a marina. Sad to say my wife and I had a terrible experience joining this club thanks to Dave Knapp. My wife's family has been long time members, and we have spent many years around the club, leading us to applying once we had our own boat. Dave was unbelievably rude, but after involving the GM his attitude changed..... temporarily. After attemping to scehdule an inspection two weeks later he told us to not even bother bringing our boat by for an inspection beacsue the ONE section of teak decking we are CURRENTLY working on doesn't look good. I went that day to cancel my membership application and get my $6k back. Apparently this club doesn't want younger members, missing out on our next 50+ years of business and our referrals. This is NOT a family friendly marina, it's no wonder they are not as popular as Loews or San Diego yacht club.... or any in the bay.
I was trying to look at venues for my wedding and I scheduled to meet with Dan so that he can show me the place. I got there on time and Dan never showed up...very disappointed.
Good Micheladas, good food and great company! If you can make it before they close maybe you can get it but love the extra trine members get. Sorry no pictures for this one but if you know, you know... have a Happy New 365 days (posted after new yrs)
Came w/ a friend.. People were absolutely welcoming.. Chill, friendly, intelligent interaction & conversation. No $5 Scotch here.. Locals Clubhouse This is how real people w/ real FU $ live in SD.
I cannot sing the praises of Dan, Chef Liliana, Pedro and the entire staff enough!! We had our wedding here this month. All of our guests loved the venue and the food! All of the staff were sooo great not only to my husband & myself, but to all our family & friends. From the moment I met with Dan and Liliana earlier this year I knew I was in great hands. Dan communicated all details and was responsive to my many emails / calls (sorry about that). We had some last minute sound issues with our DJ & Dan stepped in to assist & issue was solved. This honestly saved my sanity the day before the wedding. Dan also ensured that my father & his BFF had their favorite non alcoholic beverage stocked at the bar. They were both appreciative. Chef Liliana worked with us to create & personalize our menu to reflect both our cultures. She did an excellent job & received stamps of approval from all. We really enjoyed the tasting make sure you come hungry when you schedule yours. Everyone was stuffed during ours. I met Pedro the day of my wedding. He was sooo helpful and courteous & had the best attitude. Everything was setup beautifully. We decided to keep the patio setup with tables, chairs, sofa during cocktail hour & reception. I looked at the pictures and loved how our family & friends were relaxing by the water or getting air after dancing. We looked at several venues (8-10 ) and when I found CCYC & drove down the same day to see for myself , I could not wait to get info & details. I was in luck that Dan was there with another couple & I scheduled my meeting the following Monday. Beyond happy I did!! Thank you all for an unforgettable life changing day!!!
I attended a wedding here. As a lucky guest, I can say that this venue was an excellent choice. The facilities were large, clean, and welcoming. Plenty of seating for guests, lovely views, great location. It's located pretty far from the main shopping area so parking/ traffic/ crowds are no issue. The backdrop of the bay was gorgeous and made for nice cocktails and boat watching.
What a perfect place to get married! Coronado Cays Yacht Club is a hidden gem for anybody looking for a wedding venue! My husband and I were continuously impressed with the venue, the staff, and the excellent services that we received all through the planning process. Pricing was extremely affordable and beat out every other venue we considered by a long shot! Dan and Chef were always quick to respond to any questions or concerns that we had. Our guests were WOW'd with the large and delicious portion sizes at cocktail hour and dinner service! And for those out of town guests, the spectacular views of downtown San Diego/ the Coronado bridge blew them away! We couldn't have asked for a more streamlined and stress free planning process thanks to the staff, and our big day was everything we wanted and more! We're sad there are only 5 stars to give because this wedding venue deserves 10! Thank you Coronado Cays Yacht Club!

We had our wedding reception at the Coronado Cays Yacht Club this past July 2018 and it was everything I could have asked for! I met Dan, the events coordinator, at the Bridal Bazaar. I was walking past his booth and he called me in and told me all about the CCYC. Everything he was telling me was everything I was interested in and looking for. Dan was so helpful and accommodating from the beginning until the very end. My now husband and I went to visit the CCYC and from the moment we stepped into the venue we knew this was the place we want to celebrate our marriage. The space was ours to play around with to our liking which was fantastic since I had so many different ideas of having a dessert bar, photo booth, buffet line, section for our cake, etc. We wanted our view to be the ocean so we asked to have our sweethearts table on the dance floor and it worked out perfectly. We did have to rent a dance floor to put outside because of liability, so that was an extra expense, but it ended up working out nicely because the weather the night of our wedding was perfect especially with the ocean breeze. The food was to die for! To this day, our guests still tell us how good our food was. We also upgraded our package to have the chandelier and curtains put up to hide the reception area during cocktail hour which was a nice, elegant touch and surprise for the guests when the doors did open up for dinner. The wait staff was very professional and I heard nothing but great things about the bartenders that night. Overall, I give this venue 5 stars and my husband would agree. Thank you so much Dan and the CCYC staff! We had an absolute fantastic time on our wedding day!
Worked with Dan to plan our May 2020 wedding reception here. Unfortunately COVID hit, and we did not know when we would be holding our wedding. During the whole process of and planning from across the country, Dan was responsive and incredible helpful. We walked through the space a couple of times when I was able to visit San Diego, and had a food tasting. He and Chef Lily were able to accommodate our menu selections which were not their regular fare. I would highly recommend visiting Coronado Cays Yacht Club as an unconventional wedding venue with tons of space and ample room to let your creativity go wild. One of the things that drew us to the venue was the beautiful scenery (tons of places to take photos), the amenities (games and activities for all family members), and CCYC's flexibility. We look forward to hosting an anniversary party here in the future.

We had such an amazing experience on the island, it was remarkable! Friendly folks, sooo many things to do! Just Gorgeous!
If in San Diego, do not forget to cross the amazing bridge to Coronado. A historic place with a homey welcome and lots of things to do.
Walking, cycling, shopping, eating & drinking, sight-seeing, and more - that's Coronado Island. With a friend, I enjoyed a beautiful walk on the promenade, visited some of the shops and a hotel, and simply had a great experience. Good spot for people watching. Free parking. Accessible by public transportation. Revitalizing.
10 minute drive from San Diego. Beautiful island and good beaches. Good walk around the town, small stores for souvenirs.
We arrived and found this place to be amazing, clean and welcoming. The lay out is great and there is a little bit of everything to be found here. Homes in the area offer a wide array of style and charm. The beach is beautiful and inviting. The shops are willing to welcome and dazzle you.
Wonderful stretch on Beach..Great for a walk or run. Also just to catch a few rays! Also watch the military aircraft land.

The Hunt for Red October
An island with a famous chocolate factory becomes Moscow's newest hot spot.
In the 230 years since its creation, Moscow’s manmade island of Bolotny has vacillated between the glamorous and the glum, variously housing the British ambassador’s residence, a jumble of warehouses, a posh yacht club, and, most famously, the Red October Chocolate Factory, a fragrant landmark for much of the 20th century. In 2008 Red October moved outside the city; later that year, its cavernous headquarters was colonized by heiress Maria Baibakova’s nonprofit exhibition space, Baibakov Art Projects, which established the island as an art-world hot spot. Baibakova has since moved on, but the city’s young and fashionable continue to arrive in droves to dance, dine, gallery-hop, and take in the stellar views of the Moscow skyline. Here, a few of their favorite haunts.
Rai, a gargoyle-bedecked nightclub, can hold up to 2,500 people—and the line outside can seem just as long thanks to its merciless feis kontrol, the process of screening patrons for attractiveness and wealth. Those who do make it inside will find blasting techno, lasers bouncing off mirrored walls, and mermaids and fire-breathers for entertainment (7.495.364.01.01, raiclub.ru” target=”new”>raiclub.ru). Nearby is Rolling Stone Tattoo & Bar , a club where the feis kontrol is a bit more forgiving and the music substantially more eclectic (7.495.504.09.33, rstattoo.ru ).
Created to educate the next generation of architects and designers, the Strelka Institute opened this past May in what used to be Red October’s candy store and garage. Its one-year master’s program, which kicks off this month, was designed in part by Rem Koolhaas, who will visit bimonthly to teach. Students and nonstudents alike can watch films and listen to lectures in the outdoor amphitheater. The restaurant (pictured), which overlooks the gold onion domes of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, offers fruit-studded bulgur and Thai shrimp soup. The downstairs bar serves high-end cocktails, still a novelty in this vodka-loving town (7.495.771.74.37, strelkainstitute.com ).
PICK A FIGHT
Located up a flight of dusty stairs in one of Red October’s old factory buildings, the October Boxing Club (pictured) boasts a clientele that includes some of Russia’s most famous TV personalities. Every day after work, a steady stream of Merrill Lynch and Deutsche Bank traders shows up to beat the stress out of one another (7.499.995.07.97, bcoctober.com ).
GET AN EYEFUL
Within the walls of Red October (pictured), a number of gallerists are picking up where Baibakova left off. Pobeda Gallery, which helped host this summer’s Biennale for Young Art, shows cutting-edge contemporary photography (7.495.644.03.13, pobeda gallery.com). Mel Space often stages street-art exhibitions in a stark loft (7.499.230.31.09, melspace.ru ). Known for displaying Soviet art from 1920 to 1960, the newly relocated Art Agency Colony is branching out with an exhibit of lush, blurry works by contemporary artist Igor Kormyshev (7.499.788.62.28, no website).

It pumps 350-400 gallons of water through its system to remove and collect floating debris and oil sheen from the water's surface.
