What Was Lil Yachty’s First Song?

Lil Yachty, born Miles Parks McCollum, is an American rapper, singer and songwriter. He shot to fame whilst still a teenager in 2016 with a series of breakout hits, but what was his first song?

Lil Yachty self-released his debut EP ‘Summer songs’ on his soundcloud in 2015 and came to prominence when his track, ‘1 Night’, was used in a viral comedy video in December of that year. The rapper’s debut commercial mixtape, ‘Lil Boat’, was released in March 2016 by Quality Control Music, Capitol Records and Motown.

Read on to learn more about Lil Yachty’s music and his rise to fame.

New Kid on The Block

Though now famous for his music, Lil Yachty’s songs didn’t always come first. The rapper has said that while he always knew he was going to be something, there was a period when “he didn’t know what”.

Instead of turning his attention solely to his music, the youngster’s first goal was to establish an audience. He gradually emerged on the scene with the development of a massive instagram fanbase and, as the savvy star attests, it was all intentional.

Does Lil Yachty Own a Yacht?

Lil Yachty spent a summer in New York trying to work his way into the inner circles of influential Instagram personalities like Ian Connor and Luka Sabbat. In Lil Yachty’s own words , “It was strategic. They helped my name build.”

The rapper explained , “I knew I had to reach the people with the following, and the groupies and shit. I had to get to them. The kids look up to those people. That was the first step”.

He credits Ian Connor with putting him in Kanye West’s Yeezy fashion show in February of 2016. Soon after, he soon became a viral sensation.

Bubblegum Trap

Yachty had been making music since early 2015, in a style he calls bubblegum trap . His songs have sampled sounds from cartoon themes and videogames, giving them a bright and abstract quality that’s positive and upbeat.

Around the same time as his modelling appearance in Kanye’s fashion show, his song ‘1 Night’ was used in a viral comedy video , giving his career a huge boost.

The rapper released his debut mixtape ‘Lil Boat’ soon after, followed by collaborations with DRAM and Chance the Rapper in April and May of 2016. By June, he had signed a joint record deal with Quality Control Music, Capitol Records and Motown Records.

The artist has since released four studio albums and he made the Forbes list of top earning hip hop acts in 2017, when he was just 20 years old.

Watch the rapper’s lead single from his debut mixtape in the YouTube video below.

A Fashion Force

With a style that’s eccentric, kooky and undeniably distinctive, Lil Yachty’s aesthetic is iconic. His signature beaded red braids and playful outfits have led Vogue to name him ‘a fashion force to be reckoned with’.

His manager, Coach K, said of his fashion , “You’ve got this freakish look, but he’s not scared of who he is. He’s wearing it with pride’”.

He modelled for Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 3 show in 2016, an appearance Lil Yachty credits for his cult following as much as his music, and spent months trying to get the attention of fashion brand Nautica by wearing their clothes on social media.

This effort soon paid off and Yachty became the face of the brand’s collaboration with Urban Outfitters, before partnering with the company as their creative designer in 2017 . His other endorsement deals include Target, Beats by Dre and Adidas .

The viral icon and self-proclaimed King of Teens resists being categorized as just a rapper. In the star’s own words , “I’m not a rapper, I’m an artist. And I’m more than an artist, I’m a brand”.

His response when asked to explain his brand – ‘I’m just fire’.

How Lil Yachty Got His Second Act

By Jeff Ihaza

Until the pandemic, Lil Yachty never stopped to think about how quickly he became famous. “It was a full year from walking across the stage in high school to then I’m in this penthouse in midtown Atlanta , I got this G-wagon, put my mother in a house,” Yachty explains. “It’s a fast life. You not ever getting the chance to think about a lot of shit.”

Yachty’s 2016 hit “Minnesota,” which had the treacly energy of a nursery rhyme, earned the then-17-year-old the title “King of the Teens.” But since then, he’s become an elder statesman of a certain brand of young superstar — and something like the Gen Z answer to Diddy. He collaborated with brands like Nautica and Target; he appeared in the movie How High 2 ; he signed an endorsement deal with Sprite. Signees to his new label imprint, Concrete Boys, even get an iced-out chain.

Born Miles Parks McCollum, Yachty embodies many of the ways the music industry has changed in the past decade. He rose to fame on the internet and commands attention with or without new music. Over Zoom in March, he’s calm and reserved, pausing intently before he responds to questions. The youthful exuberance is still there, though. At one point, his mom, who lives nearby, calls to ask what he wants from the grocery store. “I need Pop-Tarts,” he says sweetly. “I really want them cinnamon-bun Pop-Tarts.”

He can afford lots of Pop-Tarts. Yachty reportedly made $13 million on endorsements in 2016 and 2017. (“Work hard, play hard,” he responds when asked about the number.) He spends more than $50,000 a month on various expenses, according to one recent headline. (“If anything I pay a little more. I have many assets and insurance, plus an elaborate payroll.”) He’s working on a Reese’s Puffs cereal collaboration, a film based on the card game Uno, and he was one of the first rappers to hop on the crypto craze, selling something called a “YachtyCoin” last December in an auction on the platform Nifty Gateway. According to a report from Coinbase, the token sold for $16,050. Yachty explains that when he was first discovered by Quality Control records founder Kevin “Coach K” Lee, “one of the biggest things he talked about was being a brand. Being bigger than just an artist — being a mogul.”

In fact, collaboration has come to be a useful tool for Yachty as he sheds the King of the Teens title for something more akin to a rap mogul. “I only work with people I have friendships with, who I really admire,” Yachty says. “And I love working with newer artists, up-and-coming artists.”  Within the world of hip-hop, Yachty has found for himself somewhere between a megastar and internet hero, and it would appear that he’s just settling in. “I just fuck with new talent. Not even like, ‘let me sign you, get under my wing,’ ” he explains. “Just ‘hey, I’ve been in this spot before. I know what that’s like, bada bing, bada boom.’ ”

Yachty started Concrete Boys last year. One of the first signees was his childhood friend Draft Day, who offers one of the more exciting features on Lil Boat 3, on the cut “Demon Time.” “I feel old sometimes,” Yachty admits. “I feel old as fuck when someone’s popping and I don’t know who they are. Which is rare, because I be on my shit.”

Yachty is also at the forefront of a new realm of social platforms, namely Twitch and Discord, that engender more direct communication within communities. Yachty frequently talks directly to fans on both platforms, and in April he collaborated with Discord on “sound packs,” which allowed users to replace the app’s normal notifications with sounds he created.

Lil Yachty continues to grow his legacy as a creative maverick with Let’s Start Here. , out now via Quality Control Music/Motown Records. The Grammy nominated artist who’s known for challenging the status quo and disregarding expectations on his artistry does just that on this new album.

For many months of 2021-2022 the acclaimed musician poured himself into a full band experience in the studio day and night with stints ranging from El Paso to Brooklyn. A deep, introspective and expansive alt-psych album, Let’s Start Here. came to life with executive production by SADPONY. His longtime love of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon and multiple psychedelic journeys influenced this ambitious and intimate album.

Lil Yachty - sAy sOMETHINg

To celebrate the album, Yachty has shared a music video for “sAy sOMETHINg.” Last night, January 26, he hosted a listening party at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey.

‘sittin’ fat down south’: lil troy’s houston rap classic.

On January 25, Yachty teased the album by sharing a skit entitled “Department Of Mental Tranquility.” In the visual, Yachty arrives in a dingy room and asks what type of treatment he wishes to receive. The camera whip-pans to another Yachty sitting in the waiting room, who begins to narrate the events. The surreal video descends into chaos as characters complain of the temperature before Yachty descends down a blinding white hallway and enters an even brighter room.

On January 17, Yachty first announced the album, revealing the title and cover art. It’s set to arrive via Motown Records/Quality Control Music. Back in October, Yachty shared a new song called “Poland” on SoundCloud, which quickly went viral. In response to the demand, Yachty shared an official version of the track on all streaming services. Rappers like Denzel Curry, Wiz Khalifa, and more were among the many to offer their thoughts on the F1lthy-produced track and its now-signature chorus, “I took the Wock to Poland.”

Johnny Cash - Songwriter LP

Let’s Start Here.

The first song on Lil Yachty’s Let’s Start Here. is nearly seven minutes long and features breathy singing from Yachty, a freewheeling guitar solo and a mostly instrumental second half that calls to mind TV depictions of astral projecting. “the BLACK seminole.” is an extremely fulfilling listen, but is this the same guy who just a few months earlier delivered the beautifully off-kilter and instantly viral “Poland”? Better yet, is this the guy who not long before that embedded himself with Detroit hip-hop culture to the point of a soft rebrand as Michigan Boy Boat? Sure is. It’s just that, as he puts it on “the BLACK seminole.”, he’s got “No time to joke around/The kid is now a man/And the silence is filled with remarkable sounds.” We could call the silence he’s referring to the years since his last studio album, 2020’s Lil Boat 3, but he’s only been slightly less visible than we’re used to, having released the aforementioned Michigan Boy Boat mixtape while also lending his discerning production ear to Drake and 21 Savage’s ground-shaking album Her Loss. Collaboration, though, is the name of the game across Let’s Start Here., an album deeply indebted to some as yet undisclosed psych-rock influences, with repeated production contributions from one-time blog-rock darlings Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson and Patrick Wimberly, as well as multiple appearances from Diana Gordon, a Queens, New York-hailing singer who made a noise during the earliest parts of her career as Wynter Gordon. Also present are R&B singer Fousheé and Beaumont, Texas, rap weirdo Teezo Touchdown, though rapping is infrequent. In fact, none of what Yachty presents here—which includes dalliances with Parliament-indebted acid funk (“running out of time”), ’80s synthwave (“sAy sOMETHINg,” “paint THE sky”), disco (“drive ME crazy!”), symphonic prog rock (“REACH THE SUNSHINE.”) and a heady monologue called “:(failure(:”—is in any way reflective of any of Yachty’s previous output. Which begs the question, where did all of this come from? You needn’t worry about that, says Yachty on the “the ride-”, singing sternly: “Don’t ask no questions on the ride.”

Lil Yachty Drops Moody Music Video for "Strike"

Presented by lyrical lemonade..

Having worked together on the music videos for “ Poland ” and “ Yae Energy ,” Lil Yachty and Lyrical Lemonade come together once again for a new moody music video for “Strike (Holster).”

The team head to a forest reserve for most of the video, leaning into the rain to compliment the spacey ambiance of the song. Yachty is swapping three fits for the video, rocking flannel and denim for the forest, bright red at the lakeside pier, and black in the parking garage where a massive bottle is seen strapped to a Maybach. We also see a rare cameo from Yachty’s sister with her voice slotted in at the end.

Lil Yachty's Label Concrete Boyz set to release their first collaboration project 'It's Us Volume 1' this April

A ccording to NFR Podcast, Lil Yachty's record label, Concrete Boys (also known as Concrete Boyz), is set to release their first collaboration project titled It's Us: Volume 1 on all streaming platforms this April.

NFR's official X account posted on March 25, confirming the release date of the Concrete Boyz project as April 5, 2024. The post also revealed the featured artists, including Lil Yachty, Karrahbooo, Draft Day, DC2Trill, and Camo. The tweet read:

"LIL YACHTY, KARRAHBOOO, DRAFT DAY, DC2TRILL, CAMO!"

The tracklist for the upcoming album is yet to be confirmed, but based on the artists involved in this project, it's likely to showcase a fusion of alternative rock, R&B, and rap.

Lil Yachty and Concrete Boys Discography

Yachty (Lil Boat), who is currently signed to Quality Control, incorporated his own Record Label Concrete Boyz, a few years ago in an attempt to bring upcoming artists in his genre to the spotlight.

Over the years, Yachty and his team have been slowly recruiting rappers and artists from across the music industry, from 31 Camo to Karahbooo, all of whose music appears to have been inspired by Boat's discography.

Lil Yachty has also collaborated with his signees on some of his previous work. Below are two songs officially released alongside Artist Draft Day:

  • Demon Time (Feat. Draft Day)
  • POPOVICH Freestyle (Feat. Draft Day)

On May 29, 2020, Yachty released his fourth studio album, titled Lil Boat 3 , across all DSPs (Digital Streaming Platforms) via Quality Control Music and Motown Records. The 19-track project included a track titled Concrete Boys .

This track acted as the official introduction to the "Concrete Crew" he was building with his record label. The song includes a shout-out to the Concrete Boys in the chorus when Yachty implies that when his "back is against the wall," he can always rely on his crew to come through for him.

Another notable bar from Lil Yachty's song has been listed below:

"I just woke up, dreamin' 'bout the rose (Oh my God) / They had ni**as 'round me who don't stand on toes (Hell nah) / Barely ever do I think about my foes / How much longer will I live? Only God knows."

On December 16, 2023, a song titled Mo Jams was released on the official YouTube channel for Concrete Boys, alongside a music video that featured most of the CB roster, except for 31 Camo. Mo Jams was produced by Rawbone and acts as the first official collaboration between the members of Concrete Boys.

This track, although not being released on DSPs, has garnered significant attention for an upcoming collaboration project by racking up almost 4 million views on YouTube.

As fans await a Concrete Boys collaboration album, Lil Yachty continues to impress fans by following up on his widely acclaimed 2023 project Let's Start Here, which found the rapper delving into a more experimental sound with his music.

Notably, Yachty has been releasing a string of singles, which include his collaboration with Fred Again.. on stayinit. The rapper was also featured on Lyrical Lemonade's debut studio album, All Is Yellow , which dropped two months ago in January 2024.

Lil Yachty Believes Drake Was ‘Deemed A Loser’ In The Kendrick Lamar Beef Before It Even Began

Derrick Rossignol

The beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar appears to have died down, as neither artist has released a diss track in a little while now. So, now that we’re at what looks like the end, Lil Yachty is taking a look back at the situation. He believes that from the very start, many people had already decided that Lamar was the winner.

On a new episode of the A Safe Place podcast, Yachty said:

“Drake was deemed a loser in this battle before it started, because people don’t like him, and haven’t, and he’s won for a very long time. And he’s sat at the top of the throne… honestly, respectfully, I think he still sits on top of the throne. I think that even if opinionated masses would say that Kendrick won, I don’t think that people are going to stop listening to Drake and Drake’s career is going to flush, you know?”

He added, “I said to Drake, I told him, ‘I don’t feel like you won or lost.’ Rappers have lost and then lost everything. […] I think Drake will still be in everyone’s rap Spotify at the end of the year at the top. He can still drop hits and it will still control the summer. I think that Kendrick made very smart moves, and I don’t think Drake would disagree.”

Drake & kendrick lamar’s rocky relationship explained, trending on billboard.

In another clip, he gives his opinion on who won or lost, and as of right now, Yachty has it as a draw because the cards were stacked against the Toronto rapper. “Drake dropped great records. But also, let’s be fair: Drake was deemed a loser in this battle before it started because people don’t like him and haven’t,” he said after suggesting Kendrick’s apparent “animosity.” He continued by admitting he thinks Drake will be fine: “I don’t think people are gonna stop listening to Drake and Drake’s career is gonna flush.”

Boat then said he told Drake “I don’t feel like you won or lost” before adding, “Rappers have lost, and then lost everything. But this hasn’t happened to Drake. He will still be in everybody’s Spotify Wrapped at the end of the year and he’ll still drop hits and control the summer. I think Kendrick made very smart moves and I don’t think Drake would disagree.”

Lil yachty analyzes drake, kendrick beef, says drake still on rap's throne, lil yachty drake was underdog vs. kendrick ... he's still rap king 👑.

Lil Yachty doesn't think Drake is permanently scarred by his battle with Kendrick Lamar -- although, almost everyone agrees he lost ... Champagne Papi's still king in Yachty's book!!!

The Boatster broke his silence about the Drake-Kendrick beef on his "A Safe Space" podcast after lyrically getting looped into the mix.

Kendrick poked at Yachty's friendship with Drake on "Euphoria" when he growled, "Yachty can't give you no swag neither, I don't give a f**k who ya hang with" -- an incredible strategy Yachty says, but not enough to ruin the OVO legacy.

Yachty thinks K.Dot brought more animosity to the battle than Drake, but says the odds were already stacked against his pal before things jumped off.

Drake's been the biggest rapper for many years -- commercially, at least -- and Yachty feels fans wanted their "down with the king" moment.

Kendrick broke streaming records with his diss tracks, and fans could call Yachty biased, but he makes good points on hip hop's history with beef -- namely that every battle has been judged differently and rules and regulations don't exist!!!

Yachty says he was aware Kendrick mentioned him on "Euphoria" before it dropped, and says even Drake would agree his competition moved wisely.

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

Only time will tell which rapper can capitalize on the moment the most!!!

Elsewhere, Lil Yachty also weighed in on the battle and addressed Kendrick bringing up his name “Euphoria.” While Yachty has historically described Drake as his “best friend,” he insisted that he “loves” both rappers. He also asserted that he wanted to stay out of the battle. “So many people kept calling me with excitement for my name being used,” he began. “I didn’t want anything to do with it. I got a ton of respect for BOTH of these guys… I [already] knew my name was mentioned before it came out, I had gotten word.”

An Atlanta-raised rapper with a sleepy flow and a bright, almost childlike outlook, Yachty (born Miles Parks McCollum in 1997) rose to prominence in 2016 with a pair of mixtapes (Lil Boat and Summer Songs 2) that recast the booming caverns of 2010s rap as something soft, sweet, intuitive, and a little goofy—a sound Yachty once called "bubblegum trap."
