Boat tours of various types are available out of Savannah and the marshes and coast nearby.

Basic narrated river cruises up and down the Savannah River are the easiest to access from Savannah. Dolphin or sightseeing tours out of Savannah or Tybee Island are also available.

If you want to see more of the region’s landscape and nature a charter tour of the creeks and rivers between Savannah and Tybee Island or down the coast is worth considering, though this is usually a more expensive option than scheduled public tours.

Nature & Sightseeing Excursions To Tybee & Skidaway

A few private boat tours explore the ecology and history of Tybee Island, with sightseeing tours of the island and fossil-hunting excursions for shark teeth and other prehistoric fragments currently available. See Tybee Island boat tours

Nature-oriented boat tours of the inland marshes near Savannah, around the Skidaway River and its larger creeks, are also available, mostly departing from either Isle of Hope or Thunderbolt. See Skidaway tours

Boat Trips To Georgia’s Barrier Islands

The three major barrier islands south of Tybee – Little Tybee, Wassaw and Ossabaw – are readily accessible as a day trip from the Savannah-Tybee region. As none of the islands have road access, a boat (or kayak, or paddleboard) is the only way to get there.

The pristine nature reserve of Little Tybee Island is the easiest to get to, a short boat ride south of Tybee. Several boat excursions are available, either touring the island and exploring its creeks (when tides allow) to see dolphins and birds, or landing, with time on the island’s secluded beaches to relax or look for shells. See Little Tybee boat tours

Further afield are Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge, and Ossabaw Island, the latter privately managed as a nature reserve and cultural site. The large publicly-accessible portion of Wassaw offers beautiful beaches and hiking trails through the island’s forested ridge, and most boat excursions will allow time to venture on land. See boat trips to Wassaw Island

The situation at Ossabaw is slightly more complicated. The beach is accessible to all, with many boat tours touring the island or landing only on these public areas. Access to the interior is controlled by the Ossabaw Island Foundation, and must be arranged either directly with them or via a tour guide, who will arrange access on your behalf. More about visiting Ossabaw Island, and details of available boat tours

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

The Georgia Queen and Savannah Riverboat Cruises

Savannah riverboat cruises’: the georgia queen..

It is a 1,000-passenger riverboat that traveled 2,800 miles down the Mississippi River, down and around the shorelines of Florida to call Savannah her home.

The Georgia Queen is a great way to see the city and is one of the most unique social gathering destinations in Savannah, but its impact on local tourism and economic development will be substantial with the added ability to attract large conferences and conventions.”

The Georgia Queen Savannah Riverboat

Built in 1995 as a luxury floating casino for 14 million dollars, the majestic 1800s paddlewheel-style riverboat spent several years traveling the Mississippi River. When gambling legislation changed, allowing land-based casinos to open, the riverboat underwent a four-million-dollar makeover. Today, this spectacular paddlewheel-style riverboat acts as Savannah Riverboat Cruises’ Savannah River Queen’s grand sister ship.

The Georgia Queen measures an impressive 230 feet long, 64 feet wide and towering at 68 feet tall.

She is among the top elite in the country with a capacity of 1,000 passengers, plus a 200-person crew, making her the size of a small cruise ship at 38,000 square feet. The ship’s entertainment spaces include three grand ballrooms with over 15,000 square feet of dining space. It offers more than 5,000 square feet of open-air top deck space with patio seating. This affords more than enough room to accommodate a romantic riverboat wedding on the Savannah River.

The Georgia Queen also boasts a multi-deck, fully equipped gourmet kitchen. It is also equipped with a large service elevator, making traveling between galleys discrete and easy. This onboard kitchen will change the entire dining experience for guests. This will allow for more plated dinner opportunities and flexibility in menu items.

The Georgia Queen

“Experiencing Savannah from our beautiful riverfront is such a unique experience,” Visit Savannah President Joseph Marinelli said.

“Savannah Riverboat’s guests are treated to refreshing breezes, fun entertainment, and some of the best southern cuisine Savannah offers. They can view Georgia’s oldest city as her founders did many years ago when they arrived by river in 1733. Jonathan and his team have been providing unforgettable narrated tours of Savannah’s harbor for 25 years. The Georgia Queen is a game-changer for their business. It will be another valuable asset to the thriving tourism and hospitality offerings of Savannah.”

Sacramento fans go "bananas" for sold-out Savannah Bananas game at Sutter Health Park

By Madisen Keavy

May 9, 2024 / 10:56 PM PDT / CBS Sacramento

WEST SACRAMENTO -- Fans at Sutter Health Park went bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S for the first of three sold-oud Savannah Bananas games.

Banana Ball  is dubbed the fastest and most entertaining game of baseball where players perform choreographed dances in between the baseball.

Three games at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento became the hottest ticket in town. The sell-out crowds will be the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th for the stadium that had its first sell-out for the exhibition game of the San Francisco Giants versus the Sacramento River Cats.

The sold-out crowds in West Sacramento led CBS13 to ask, is it a dress rehearsal ahead of the A's arrival?

Brittney Nizuk, Vice President of Facilities and Events for the River Cats, told CBS13 the team is focused on right now: the 2024 River Cats season and the Savannah Bananas' three-day homestand.

"We're always talking, to have a sold-out crowd, we're always preparing regardless if we have that," said Nizuk, "It makes it exciting, the whole community is out here to support Sutter Health Park and Savannah Bananas and we are just thrilled to be here."

Nizuk said that on sell-out nights they staff the park as much as they can. Then, after every event, debrief as a team to talk about wins and ways to improve.

Fans told CBS13 the sell-out proved that Sacramento is a baseball town and can show up in numbers.

  • May 13 - Georgia DOT to host In-Person Public Information Open House for the Proposed SR 404 Spur/US 17 at Savannah River Crossing Project
  • Savannah Business Journal Staff Report
  • May 13, 2024

May 13, 2024 -  The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) will host an in-person Public Information Open House (PIOH) for the proposed SR 404 Spur/US 17 at Savannah River Crossing Project (PI 0017183), which explores potential long-term improvement alternatives for the existing bridge over the Savannah River. The public is invited to attend the open house on May 20, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Coastal Georgia Center at 305 Fahm Street, Savannah, Georgia 31401. The purpose of this PIOH is to give the public an opportunity to review the project background and potential solutions as well as submit feedback.

As the fastest growing port in the nation, the Port of Savannah is a significant economic engine for the Savannah region, the state of Georgia, and the nation. Potentially stifling future growth, however, is the Port’s accessibility to larger ships. These larger ships, which are becoming increasingly common on the world’s oceans, are limited by the existing 185-foot clearance of SR 404 Spur/US 17 bridge. The proposed project seeks to address this limitation. The project team is evaluating alternatives so that the project can proceed into conceptual engineering design and preliminary environmental studies.

The PIOH will offer an opportunity for the public to not only review project materials, but also ask questions of designated subject-matter experts in attendance. There will be no formal presentation. For those unable to attend, materials are also available on the project website at  https://bit.ly/SavannahRiverCrossing .

Comments about the proposed project will be accepted until Wednesday, June 5, 2024. There are several ways the public can submit comments on the project:

  • Leave a written comment or speak to a court reporter at the in-person PIOH on May 20, 2024.
  • Complete the online  comment form located on the project website:  https://bit.ly/SavannahRiverCrossing
  • Email comments to project email address:  [email protected]
  • Call the project hotline at 404-631-1526 to leave a recorded comment (please provide name and contact information)
  • Mail written comments to the Georgia Department of Transportation; Attention: Eric Duff, State Environmental Administrator, 600 West Peachtree Street, NE – 16th Floor, Atlanta, Ga., 30308

For someone with a sweet tooth like mine, a visit to River Street Sweets is truly a sugary paradise. The moment I stepped inside, I was drowned in the sweet smell of freshly made candies, and my eyes were dazzled by the colorful array of confections displayed in every corner of the store. With so many choices, it was a delightful challenge to decide which treats to indulge in. I found myself tempted to buy each and every kind. In the end, I bought a box filled with their world-famous pralines and their rich, creamy fudge. Service was friendly and accommodating. If you find yourself in Savannah, don't miss the chance to taste the Southern sweets they have to offer at River Street Sweets.

It's always a treat to visit River Street Sweets! I lived in Savannah, GA for almost two years when I was in college and loved visiting River Street Sweets, usually get to a sample of their famous pralines. That sweet smell is irresistible! We stayed on River Street in September, and of course, had to make a stop at this candy store. Not much has changed. It looks just like it did many years ago and still offers the same delicious treats. Can't resist their pralines, so we got that and some taffy -- another crowd favorite -- to bring back to our son. River Street Sweets is a must when in Savannah! At the very least, come in and get a sample of their pralines. They offer them all day!

Gretel, Thanks for the sweet review! We're so glad you and your family had a wonderful time at our candy shop. Looking forward to your next visit! Wishing you a sweet day!

Grew up in GA and TX, and stayed in Savannah with family a couple of times. So we are very familiar with sweet southern treats and baked goods. When we discovered River Street Sweets, we began ordering from them immediately! They still send food catalogues spotlighting the family owners and long-standing employees, as well as their extensive lineup of sweets. Themed catalogues arrive throughout the year. So you will always be able to make yourself or others happy. Although we have never been to any of their physical locations, when it comes to service, they get an A+. Had a corporate order that disappeared upon arrival. After doing weeks of investigating the matter, and turning up empty handed, we reached out to River Street Sweets to see what they could do. Much to our surprise and delight, Ashley at River Street Sweets offered to replace the order at no extra charge! It arrived, and almost disappeared again! Had to rescue it from a Supervisor who was about to cut into the box with scissors! Whew!!! Have been and will be ordering from them for years! If you want to gift family, friends, or yourself with sweet treats, River Street Sweets is the place to start!

thank you for the sweet review and for your continued corporate orders! We are so glad to have had the opportunity to make you delicious handmade sweets over the years. Until next time, have a sweet day!

Yummy stuff! You are first greeted by the enticing smells and then they offer you a taste of a praline and you are hooked. Hard to resist the fresh made treats and the prices are not bad for what they are offering. Many novel old timey kinds of candy available also.

May 13, 2024

Thank you for your kind words, Wendy! We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed our delicious treats and found our prices reasonable. It's always a pleasure to offer a taste of our pralines to our guests. We appreciate your support and look forward to the opportunity to serve you again soon!

Walking in this candy shop had a lot of options. It was clean and people seemed pleasant and smiles. They also have a lot of candy that you don't see anymore. Lots of candies from 20 or even 30-40 years ago and only see at specialty places occasionally. There was only 1 negative and that was that I picked up one container of a candy I was reminiscing about and it was expired. I looked at others and I didn't see any others like that but it did make me question how often the supplies are being turned over. In all it was a fun place to look through.

Jan 15, 2024

Hilary, thank you for bringing your experience to our attention- no one should ever leave our candy shop feeling less than sweet! If you have a moment, please email us at [email protected] with additional details about your visit such as the date and time & candy that was expired so we can address your concerns and make it right. Thank you for your time and honest feedback and, as always, have a sweet day!

My first time at River Street Sweets and what a delicious experience. Wall to wall and floor to ceiling treats. A true Candy land. And yes I was like a kid in a candy store. Lol But you just have to try the pralines. Weather it's cover in dark chocolate or milk chocolate it don't matter. I know this because I bought both and both were equally fantastic. Hands down the best Pralines I've ever had. The only glitch was that the check out person seemed a little confused about which customer was next in line. She kept taking different people in no particular order and was having trouble working the "cash register" (Is that even a term anymore?) lol. But it was still a wonderful experience. I went back the next day. So it had to be good.

This is a must do for me when in Savannah - love my pralines! I love that you can get a free sample when you walk in, and they have a huge variety of sweets including taffy. The sugar here is not cheap, but it's special. I usually grab at least a few pralines for the road and sometimes more. It's fun to watch them make the taffy, very interesting to see. Today they had a special where you buy 1 lb of pralines and get a 1/2 lb free so that was nice. The staff is friendly and you can usually get in and out pretty quickly.

Fun shop with great samples and desserts. Enjoyed watching them make some of their products live and the sweets tasted good. Marshmellow clusters were fantastic, peanut butter cups were decent!

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions hosts event aimed at coaxing girls into science careers

riverboat in savannah

About 65 girls gathered at the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center at the University of South Carolina, Aiken campus on Saturday to learn about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers.

STEM Like a Girl hosted by Savannah Nuclear Solutions focused on the importance of girls pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, positions typically held by men.

“Women are underrepresented in these particular fields,” said Taylor Rice, education outreach programs coordinator for Savannah River Nuclear Solutions. “We’re trying to show these girls that they can do anything. And there are women at Savannah River Site doing these jobs.”

STEM Like a Girl started at 8:30 a.m. with registration and breakfast. Following breakfast the girls were broken up into groups of seven and introduced to various interactive activities including robotics and coding.

“We’re focused on middle school age girls because we're trying to get them before they get to high school,” said Rice. “I feel like by middle school, they've had time to think about different things related to engineering. It’s also a great time to bring out those other skills in women like curiosity, creativity, critical thinking skills that women also need to do well in STEM fields.”

Rice said 50 volunteers that work in a variety of STEM fields at the Savannah River site helped pull the all day event together.

“They'll get to do a robotics activity,” said Rice. “They’re going to do some engineering challenges with a building contest. They'll also get to participate in a design engineering challenge.”

Rice said the girls are able to get to animate their name with coding. They'll do a planetarium show and get to create light with graphite circuits.

Kiaja Lailand Wells, eighth-grade student at Langley Bath Clearwater Middle heard about the STEM event from her science teacher.

“I chose to do it because my dad is an engineer,” said Wells, 14. “I’m really interested in science. I want to be a neurosurgeon. That’s why I’m here. I’m also really good at building stuff.”

For students that aren’t sure which route to take Wells had this to say: “Don’t allow fear to hold you back. Just go for it.”

Alexia Pruitt, a Richmond County Technical Career Magnet School was also in attendance.

“I'm really interested in robotics,” said 13-year-old-Pruitt. “I also love learning about the periodic table and the elements. I’m excited about what career opportunities are available for me in the future. I'm thinking about either something dealing with computers, engineering or robotics.”

Carla Wheeler, engineering staffing and development manager for Savannah River Nuclear Site, said about 20% of engineers at SRNS are females.

“We definitely want to recruit more because they have kind of an artistic flair, typically, and bring a whole new side of creativity to engineering,” said Wheeler. “We're solving problems that people have. It's a different concept than a lot of people think about when they think of engineering.”
