Nicholson 32: an ocean-going pedigree that lasts

The primary design considerations for the Nicholson 32 were to produce an easily handled yacht of moderate dimensions, capable of a sea-kindly sailing performance in all conditions.

She was to have the classic looks of a traditional wooden yacht but was in fact one of the first offshore cruisers to be built entirely out of GRP, to a high specification and enviable build quality.

A little history of the Nicholson 32

The Nicholson 32 was a development of the successful South Coast One Design (SCOD) and other proven Charles Nicholson designs like the nine-tonner, Jolina .

Charles’ son, Peter, believed demand for custom yachts was dwindling and glass-fibre production yachts were the future.

The Nicholson 32 had to meet three criteria.

It had to be about 32ft (9.7m) long, easy to build and cost less than £5,000 at the time.

The hulls were moulded by Halmatic in Portsmouth and mainly fitted out by Camper & Nicholson.

For maximum strength and integrity, the hull, deck, ballast, bulkheads and furniture were all bonded together.

Most have suffered from osmosis over the years and many will have been peeled, dried and re-gelled.

Make sure the cost of any osmosis remedial work is reflected in the price.

The marque went through 11 model upgrades, including some quite major redesigns.

The 1963 Mk I models (1-6) had mahogany joinery and individually built furniture.

A few changes were made for the Mk II (7-10), most importantly aluminium spars.

A good many more additions were made to the Mk III (11-40) and the Mk IV yachts (41-87), including a cockpit sole engine hatch, U-bolt chainplates, aluminium framed windows and a teak interior.

By 1966, the Mk V boat (88-111) was in production with numerous enhancements to the engine compartment and a stainless-steel fuel tank.

Further refurbishments to the interior, including replacing the pilot berth with a pull-out double, denoted the Mk VI (112-147) and Mk VII (148-190) yachts, while the Mk VIII (191-236) models had new windows and hatches.

There was no Mk IX but the Mk X (237-329) underwent major modernisation and restyling.

The freeboard was raised 3in/75mm, enabling the coachroof to be lowered and the windows redesigned.

Her cockpit was enlarged by removing the afterdeck, increasing her length to 10m/33ft, and the offset companionway was moved to the centreline.

Myriad other modifications were incorporated, including new scuppers, bow roller, locker drains and handrails, a better 12-volt electrical system and the interior was again updated.

In 1977, Halmatic built another 40 Mk XI models, after modifications to make it cheaper to build.

They introduced GRP furniture modules, a restyled galley, a quarterberth behind a forward-facing chart table and optional wheel steering.

Down below on the Nicholson 32

Early models had a basic layout.

The positioning of the water and fuel tanks above the keel left plenty of stowage beneath the bunks.

She had comfortable twin berths in the forepeak and two 1.93m/6ft 4in straight settees in the saloon, plus a pilot berth above the port settee.

From the Mk IV the latter was removed and replaced by a double, formed by sliding a board out from under the settee.

It wasn’t until the Mk X model that she gained a quarterberth.

The heads were forward of the saloon, with a sink opposite.

The original galley was pretty rudimentary, with a non-gimballing Primus stove and a single sink with hand-pumped cold water.

Stowage was reasonable, though, and most will have been upgraded by owners.

Headroom is 1.83m/6ft throughout the saloon/galley area.

The chart table was originally a longitudinal, stand-at affair, but was later (Mk X+) moved to port, turned sideways and used the settee as a seat.

That allowed the galley to be enlarged to take a gimballed cooker. On deck Her cockpit is roomy and high coamings keep the spray out and crew in.

Stepping out onto the side decks is safe as they are wide and uncluttered.

The coachroof-mounted handrails are well within reach as far as the shrouds and her raised, teak-capped gunwales provide good foot bracing.

There were originally difficulties with moulded-in stanchion sockets, causing the decks to craze if any substantial sideways pressure was put on them.

Separate metal bases were used in later models.

The foredeck is roomy thanks to her broad shoulders and pre-1972 models have a moulded recess to accommodate a Danforth anchor.

This intruded into the forecabin quite noticeably, along with the chain pipe taking the rode down to a chain locker beneath the bunk.

The recess was finally removed in the Mk XI and replaced with a self-stowing, stemhead anchor roller for a CQR.

Her running rigging is simple, with long genoa tracks atop the bulwarks leading to large primary winches aside the helm.

Pre-Mk X models had the mainsheet track along the afterdeck, which was later moved to just abaft the rudder stock.

Rig & sails

All models were masthead rigged with a relatively short mast and a full set of stout shrouds.

She came with several hanked-on headsails at first, but a furling genoa was later provided as standard instead.

Some had an optional inner forestay (often removeable) for rigging a storm jib.

Her well-balanced seakeeping qualities and comfortable motion were accomplished by giving her a heavy displacement, long overhangs, a full keel and a 50% ballast ratio.

A 24ft waterline, broad shoulders and high wetted surface area means she isn’t particularly quick in modern terms, especially in light airs, but that said she is stiff, stands up well to full sail, is relatively light on the helm and exhibits very little leeway.

Her bluff bows and relatively broad shoulders can make her baulk sailing close-hauled in heavy seas, but usually freeing her off a few degrees cures the problem.

Her buoyant bow sections can produce a tendency to yaw downwind, so many advise adding some ballast up forward.

The combination of her short mast, hefty lead ballast, full keel and buoyant hull means she rarely heels beyond a comfortable ‘lean’.

Her barn door-style rudder can induce a little weather helm when pushed, but in mitigation the rudder never loses its bite, meaning she’s unlikely to broach in big seas.

Under power

Originally a 29hp diesel Watermota Sea Panther provided the power.

Like all long-keelers the Nicholson 32 was awful going astern under power.

The trick was to build up a little speed some way off where you wanted to end up and then knock it out of gear using the speed through the water to steer.

Too much speed, though, and the tiller would be ripped out of your hands!

Owners’ experiences

S/Y Fals Cappa (Mk VII, HN 171, LD 1969)

Alan Thorne, 63, has owned the five berth Mk VII model for 10 years and says she’s a delight to sail.

Under his ownership he has carried out numerous improvements, including upgrading the headsail winches to self-tailing, adding spinnaker winches and Aries wind vane steering, plus many of the usual upgrades to modernise the electronics.

Fals Cappa had already had her engine replaced when he purchased her.

‘I have found no faults in the design or construction,’ he notes.

Now widowed, he sails singlehanded along the East and South Coast, as well as to France, Belgium and Holland.

Asked how she sails, Alan says: ‘Wonderful! She sails like a dinghy, beautifully balanced, secure and reassuring in all sea conditions that I’ve encountered. Cuts through waves while other yachts are slamming or rounding up.

‘With an autopilot and wind vane a Nicholson 32 is a delight to sail single-handed. During the past couple of years, I have raced her single-handed too and thoroughly enjoyed it, although changing hank-on headsails mid-race is a tad exciting on short legs!’

S/Y Ballyhoo (Mk VIII, HN 203, LD 1970)

Sandy, 76 and Josephine, 72 Tyndale-Biscoe have owned Ballyhoo since 1999, and now keep her in Falmouth.

The couple both learned to sail dinghies as children.

Sandy also sailed the RNE Manadon college’s Morgan Giles 43 yachts when he was in the Royal Navy.

‘We were given an Albacore after we married, but found that small children and large, high-performance dinghies do not really mix. So, after some years canalling in a narrowboat, we bought Vin Rosé , a British Folkboat with a doghouse,’ says Sandy.

The couple have also owned a Fisher 25 Freeward before buying Ballyhoo at the Lymington Used Boat Show.

‘She is, I think, unique in having a deck-stepped mast. We replaced her engine with a 24hp Beta Marine in 2014. Otherwise,’ Sandy says, ‘she is original. We have found no faults beyond the usual wear and tear common in any boat of her age.

‘ Ballyhoo has plenty of sail for the conditions where we sail. I generally use the Nº1 jib and take a reef above 12kts true wind. Once, during a Channel crossing in a westerly Force 6, the jib furler jammed, so we dropped the main and proceeded under genoa alone.

‘Unable to cross the Chichester Bar for three hours forced us to beat up the Solent for shelter. Discovering that Ballyhoo would sail to windward under genoa alone in such conditions gave us enormous confidence. I like the security of knowing that she is able to stand up to practically anything the weather can throw at her.’

S/Y Hy-Brasail (Mk IV, HN 85, LD 1965)

Simon Braunholtz, 62, has owned Hy-Brasail for eight years, in which time he has fitted a removable inner forestay and a diesel heater.

Before crossing the Atlantic, her previous owner led all lines into the cockpit to simplify reefing.

‘When I bought her there were leaky deck fittings and windows, which we fixed. Hy-Brasail has the pilot berth behind the port settee, which Simon says, ‘is an excellent berth for off-watch crew and extremely useful for stowing bags on passage.’

A flexible water tank in the forepeak feeds a foot-pump at the galley and the previous owner fitted a fridge.

She has a wind generator to keep the batteries topped up.’

For several years Simon kept Hy-Brasail in Scotland before moving her to Falmouth and finally Devon.

‘The Nicholson 32 is a lovely boat to sail. Her deep long hull with over three tonnes of lead ballast takes her through seas without bouncing around or slapping the water, although her low freeboard means the toe-rails sometimes get wet. She is comfortable for two, although comfort is a relative term. She was built at a time when people wanted adventure on the water, rather than a chilled Chardonnay tied to a pontoon.

‘The Bukh 24 engine has proven reliable, with regular maintenance. Motoring backwards is “interesting”, but I’ve become accustomed to it.’

Simon also owns a 1970 Mk VIII model, Splashdown (HN 212), moored on the west coast of Scotland.

‘The main difference is she has no pilot berth so the settee is set further back. The additional space makes her more comfortable than Hy-Brasail and the cabin table is larger.

‘She is equipped with radar, AIS, a chartplotter, wind generator and an Aries wind vane, which I have rebuilt. Being previously kept in the Mediterranean, she also has a hatch in the main cabin to improve airflow.’

What the experts say about the Nicholson 32

A proper-looking yacht with more freeboard (and therefore dryer) than other Folkboat-inspired yachts such as the Contessa 32 and Twister.

A handsome boat with grown up gunwales and a proper long keel.

Joinery was made to a very high standard and these up-market yachts were equipped with good quality seacocks and deck furniture.

The Nicholson 32 enjoyed a very long production run and evolved through many models and updates.

The defect that I discover most frequently on them is osmosis.

Full-blown, proper inter-laminate osmosis and not the ‘almost osmosis’ that you find between the laminate and layers of gelcoat on a Westerly, for instance. I commonly find osmosis with other Halmatic boats, such as Nelson motor cruisers and pilot boats.

It could be that Halmatic used the same resins as Westerly at the time, which also suffer.

Another theory is that, whilst obsessed with attaining and keeping Lloyds A1 Scantling Certification, Halmatic tended to over-consolidate the resins into the chopped strand glass-fibre matting and cloth, leaving them a little dry.

Saying that, just about all Nicholsons and Halmatic yachts that have suffered from blistering will have been treated by now.

If buying one, look out for blistering as epoxy treatment only tends to last around 10 years.

The last Nicholson 32 I surveyed still had its original Watermota Sea Panther 30hp engine.

It wouldn’t start so the broker called a young marine engineer to get it going.

He looked at me in disbelief when I told him it was a Ford Consul/Cortina petrol engine with a diesel cylinder head!

He thought that I was messing with him when I further explained that the starter motor was not powerful enough to get a diesel going so there was a special switch to join the batteries in series so they whacked out 24 volts.

Although Watermota engines are actually very good (the company is still making engines in Devon), most of these will have been replaced by now.

Deck joints and stem head fittings have been known to part on some models, but most are likely to have been rectified already.

I’ve had the pleasure of surveying many of these well-built yachts.

The issues of moisture are common in all of them although the ones I’ve dealt with haven’t been particularly deep, as most of the boats built by Halmatic had clear resins that generally don’t absorb moisture in the same way as pigmented resin.

As they are predominantly laminated from chop strand, any moisture will be held longer due to the short glass filament strands.

I’ve had no issues with the encapsulated fin keel and ballast incorporated within its lower forward production.

The GRP rudder was hung from the end of her keel moulding and suitably supported.

But I have had a few loose bronze cast shoes, and fastenings should be checked for moisture ingress.

Lastly, be aware that some older boats I’ve surveyed have had a gas locker that drains below the waterline, which will need a rethink.

This Ocean Super Sport Express is in good condition for her. Age. The seller had the bottom cleaned and painted 10/2022, the engines serviced 10/2022. She needs some TLC to clean her up, the deck cushions need to be repaired. There is a generator, but not currently operable. The port side engine needs has some electrical issues and needs attention. Stock #332724 Super Sport Express powered by lower hour 454 Crusaders! Great for fishing & family! Top of the line sound system! This rare 1990 Ocean Yachts Super Sport Express is for sale and is located in South Florida. She is powered by twin 454 Crusader gas engines. She is used weekly and runs great. The cockpit is very open with a ton of seating and a large AFT fishing deck. The helm houses updated twin Garmin XS GPS systems, VHF, a new JL Audio stereo system, windlass controls, and updated gauges. Down below is an air-conditioned cabin that houses a galley with a sink, fridge, 2-burner stove, and microwave. V Berth forward and mid is another sleeping berth. Large sofa sleeper and a 32' smart TV. There is a full head with a shower and a flush overboard head. Up on the bow is a large sun pad with a backrest and an updated windlass. 1984 Ocean Refitted with Interior and Engine Room in 2015/2016 it's a 55 foot but 60 foot overall. It's registered and lien free in NY. However the boat is in Jacksonville FL.There is seriously too much too list with about 100,000 worth of engine room receipts alone in the last 18 months. Port has full overhaul down to replacing the cams to the bare block.. The starboard has a overhaul being done but not complete. Have many extra parts and again too much too list - starboard has new riser, turbos, manifolds, blowers, etc. It has about 1 full week of labor to complete. "almost new engines give or take" My mechanic was a Detroit Diesel Employee and is the only one who touched the engine room. He has 30 years experience and would be proud to have anyone survey the boat.The hull has a soft fiberglass spot on the port side, some splintering on the teak gunwalls toward bow of the boat. Had customs plasteak cabinets made custom speakers custom lighting custom canvas on the stern. Could use some asthtetics. There is no splintering and the boat had strainers done, bottom paint, new zincs, polished props in 2015 and had divers touch it up three times this year to clean bottom.The interior has new carpet, stainless appliances with full size fridge, full granite through whole boat, 55 inch TV, blueray, Bluetooth, surround sound, 3 bedrooms with 3 bathrooms.. Both Bunk rooms need wallpaper as they were stripped and sanded but overall interior is great and willing to go further with the buyer on completion based on sale price. The addition of the all new AV 2® hardtop makes the 32-foot  Freedom 325  an incredibly versatile boat for both offshore fishing, all-around coastal cruising, and entertaining. A beamy, spacious, high-quality dual console boat, the 325 has luxurious cabin features with two consoles, one with a berth and bulk storage, and the other with head, sink, and storage closet. There are too many standard features to name–but some include a sun platform, livewell, and access doors on both the port side and at the transom. Top it off with an optional generator, air conditioning, and a wet bar with refrigerator for a boat that provides all-day comfort and function.

Our objective is to build you a one-of-a-kind vessel that is exactly what you need for your demanding job – a 32 foot boat with unsurpassed quality, functionality and performance.

Our 32’ landing craft series is available in 10’ beam, 11’ beam and 12’ beam in both mono hull and catamaran designs. Twin 200-350 HP outboards are commonly used. Triple 250-350 outboards can be utilized for high speed or heavy load applications. Inboard engines with sterndrive or waterjet propulsion are also available for the 32’ Series.

La Crosse, WI: The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse selected this 32’ Packcat R/V Prairie Springs for the UWL River Studies Center, bringing together students and faculty from a variety of programs to work on freshwater challenges in partnership with state and federal organizations. Specialized outfitting includes a gear driven Universal Sonar Mount for deploying high power transducers, wet lab with fresh and raw water faucets, and moon pool on the forward deck for deploying scientific equipment. Additional outfitting includes a 5kw generator, air conditioning, lifting davit, anchor windlass and inverter. Twin Honda 225’s are installed with Optimus 360 joystick controls with station hold capability.

Their 32’ Munson is designed to take advantage of the pure Alaska wilderness experience. The walk through cabin includes seating for six passengers, Webatso cabin heater, head compartment and galley. Additional outfitting includes an aft control station, downriggers, davit with pot puller, underdeck fish hold and cleaning table. A Steelhead ES-1000 crane was installed on the cabin roof to facilitate launching & retrieving a Highfield hard bottom dinghy with 9.9 HP outboard. Twin Suzuki 250 outboards were installed with Optimus 360 joystick controls with station hold capability.

The James City County Fire Department selected this 32’ Munson fire boat to provide modern firefighting and search and rescue capabilities to first responders. A Darley LSDE 1000 GPM fire pump is plumbed to a TFT Crossfire monitor with quad stacked tip at the bow. The walk around cabin includes a Webatso AT40 heater and Dometic Dura-Sea air conditioner. Cincinnati, OH:   The Cincinnati Fire Department was organized in 1853 and is the nation’s oldest fully paid professional fire department.  Their new 32’ Munson fire boat brings modern firefighting and search and rescue capabilities to Cincinnati first responders to protect lives and property on the Ohio River.  A Hale 1500 GPM fire pump is plumbed to bow, stern & roof monitors with 30 gallon Class B foam system.  Additional outfitting includes Furuno radar/plotter/sounder, Flir thermal imaging camera, 12V bow thruster, side dive door, lifting davit, push knees, tow post, outboard motor guard, folding radar arch, and triple-axle gooseneck trailer.

Garfield, AR: Nebco Fire-EMS operates this 32’ Munson on Beaver Lake, a 50 mile long man-made reservoir in the Ozark Mountains that sees 3.1 million visitors annually. Their 32’ Munson emergency response vessel is outfitted with a Hale 1500 GPM fire pump with bow monitor, Akron Stream Master II remote controlled roof monitor, and 4” LDH for supplying full pump capacity to land based pumper trucks. Additional outfitting includes a Garmin radar/plotter/sounder, side dive door, tow post, motor guard, lifting davit, and trailer.

San Juan Islands, WA:   The San Juan Islands consists of over 120 named islands, but commercial ferry service is only offered to 4. This 32’ Munson is used for accessing remote islands, as well as sport fishing and crabbing. Outfitting includes a hydraulic bow door, D-rubber fendering, 12v down riggers, rod holders, davit, and a 50hp kicker motor. The cabin is equipped with forced air heat, head compartment, galley with stove, sink, and refrigerator, four person settee, and Garmin navigation package.

Mt. Clemens, MI:   Macomb County is characterized by dynamic urban clusters, expansive networks of industry and commerce, as well as pristine natural features. Their 32’ Munson is used patrols, dive operations, search and rescue, and to transport equipment. Outfitting includes a fully enclosed wheelhouse, cabin heater, roof top air conditioner, 5kw generator, davit, side dive door, search light, LED flood lights, FLIR camera, Garmin navigation package, stereo, canvas bimini top, SHOXS 2000 seats, and triple axle trailer.

Myers, FL:   Lee County is known for its emerald green waters, Sanibel Island & the Everglades.  Lee County Division of Natural Resources serves to protect, preserve and enhance its tropical coastal ecosystem and facilities. Their 32’ Munson is used for servicing aids to navigation, diving, and environmental response.  Outfitting includes removable bow scaffolding, 16” Garmin navigation package, motor guard, tow post and tow line protection screen.

Pittsburg, CA: Located in San Francisco Bay, Contra Costa County Fire Department is responsible for emergency response for 88 square miles of water. Their 32’ Munson emergency response vessel is outfitted with a Hale 1500 GPM fire pump with bow & stern discharges, TFT Monsoon 2000 remote controlled roof monitor, Class B foam system, and 4” STORZ LDH for supplying full pump capacity to land based pumper trucks. Additional outfitting includes Furuno TZ Touch 2 radar/plotter/sounder, port & starboard dive doors, motor guard, trailer, and Mercury Joystick piloting controls with Skyhook GPS positioning system.

San Mateo, CA: The State of California DOT Structure Maintenance Division performs bridge inspections in accordance with federal regulations.  Their 32’ Munson dive boat is outfitted with heavy duty hull fendering for working alongside concrete and steel structures.  Additional outfitting includes push knees, tow post, engine guard, 12V anchor windlass, lifting davit, side dive door, Garmin 7612xsv dual screen navigation displays, and triple axle trailer.   Triple 250 Yamaha outboards provide 40 knot top speed with 4000 lb payload.

Harve de Grace, MD: Susquehanna Hose Company is responsible for protecting the waterfront where the Susquehanna River enters the Chesapeake Bay. Their 32’ Munson emergency response vessel is outfitted with a Hale 1500 GPM fire pump with bow & roof discharges, Akron Stream Master II remote controlled roof monitor, Class B foam system, and 4” STORZ LDH for supplying full pump capacity to land based pumper trucks. Additional outfitting includes Garmin dual screen 7610xsv radar/plotter/sounder, Flir thermal camera, port & starboard dive doors, motor guard, and trailer.

Cayman Islands:  This 32’ Packcat serves as a yacht tender for a 59.6m private yacht.  Outfitting includes seating for up to 18 passengers, four way lifting eyes, port & starboard boarding doors, dive ladder, fuel transfer pump, push knees, and retractable canvas bimini top.   A forward control station allows for better visibility when transporting large vehicles.

Henrico, VA:  Henrico County’s Maritime Incident Response Team responds to fires, spills, rescue, medical aid, towing & salvage.  Their 32’ Munson emergency response vessel is outfitted with a Hale 1500 GPM fire pump with bow & stern discharges, Elkhart RF controlled bow monitor, 20 gallon Class B foam system, and 5” storz hydrant for supplying full pump capacity to land based pumper trucks.  Additional outfitting includes Lowrance dual screen HDS-12 plotters, LSS-2 structure scan sonar, 4G broadband radar, Flir thermal camara, 5kw generator, air conditioning, port & starboard dive doors, dive bottle racks and trailer.

Sitka, AK: Ocean Lure Charters operates the 32’ Dayna Joy as a six pack charter boat.   Special features include a bow control station, large underdeck fish hold and freshwater   washdown system.   The walk through cabin incorporates seating for six passengers, head compartment, galley with sink, Webatso forced air cabin heater and Fusion stereo.   Garmin navigation electronics are installed at the pilot and co-pilot stations.

Sitka, AK:  The City of Sitka Harbor Department operates and maintains 5 boat harbors and is responsible for emergency response and environmental cleanup operations.  Their 32’ Packcat is outfitted with a 1-ton telescoping boom crane, removable hinging fish totes, port & starboard side doors, push knees, tow post, engine guard and triple axle trailer.

Prince Rupert, BC:  Highlander Marine Services provides fast, efficient and economical year round transportation in the remote regions of northern British Columbia.  The M/V Highland Ranger is Transport Canada certified for 12 passengers and up to 3 tons of cargo.  The cabin is outfitted with both diesel and propane heaters, shock mitigating seats, and convertible bunk for overnight accommodations.  A triple axle trailer was supplied to provide over the road transport.

Deadhorse, AK:   Alaska Clean Seas is a non-profit oil spill response cooperative who protects the environment by providing effective response services to the Alaska North Slope Crude Oil Producers.  The 32’ Oliktok Guardian is assigned to ENI Petroleum operations and is tasked with transporting personnel, equipment and boom deployment for near shore response operations.  Special arctic features include storm covers for cabin windows and forced air diesel cabin heater.  The large walk through cabin provides seating for 8 passengers.

Panama City, Panama: MINERVA is a multi-purpose cargo and sport boat operating out of Panama. The large canvas bimini top is removable and extends from the console to the forward deck to provide shade for passengers. The large front cargo deck is used for transporting pallets of cargo and equipment. Outfitting includes a rocket launcher style rod holder, 12V anchor windlass, dive ladder, and foldable deck seating.

Richmond, CA: Marine 60 is an emergency response fire rescue vessel stationed at the Chevron Texaco refinery in Richmond California. A 5.7 GM V8 engine charges the Darley 1000 GPM fire pump with dual discharge monitors at the bow. The monitors are supplied by a 20 gallon Class B foam system. A 2.5" quick disconnect can be used to aid firefighting efforts on shore. A bow thruster was installed to assist fire crews in keeping the vessel stationary while firefighting.

Salem, MA: The Salem Maritime National Historic Site was the first national historic site established. Its purpose is to promote the maritime history of New England, and preserve the historic waterfront. The M/V Naumkeag is COI certified for 18 passengers + 2 crew for a regular route from Derby Wharf to a beach located on Baker's Island. Passenger seating is provided by cushioned seat lockers on the forward deck and a stbd. side door provides wheelchair access.

Charleston, SC: The Charleston Police Department operates in varying sea and weather conditions within the Charleston Harbor out to 20 miles offshore the coast of South Carolina. Typical missions involve tracking and intercepting suspicious and sometimes high performance vessels. An extensive electronics package was specified including a Kohler 5Kw generator, a Garmin 5212 GPSMAP radar/plotter/sounder complete with 12.1" display, Flir night vision camera and Hummingbird 1197c side scan sonar.

Hollywood, SC: The US Fish and Wildlife Service is responsible for maintenance of the Ernest F. Hollings ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge. In doing so they are required to transport heavy machinery including pickup trucks. A draft 11.5 inches and a cargo capacity of 10,000lbs were provided to meet the transportation and shallow water operation requirements. A lengthened and reinforced bow door was installed to allow quick and safe loading and unloading of equipment

Pasagshak Bay, AK: Go Get'Em was designed as an overnight-capable sport fisherman. The cabin is outfitted with a head compartment, hot water shower, full galley, forced air cabin heat and convertible settee to allow her owners to explore parts of Alaska that cannot be reached on day trips. On deck, downrigger mounts, a 12v lifting davit/pot puller and rocket launcher fishing rod holders make Go Get'Em a serious fishing machine.

Houston, TX: As part of the Tactical Operations Division, the Houston Police Dive Team is composed of highly trained public safety divers who provide search and recovery operations as well as imaging of underwater scenes. Their 32’ Munson dive boat incorporates bow, side and stern dive ladders, dive bottle racks and swimmer rails near the waterline. The large cabin includes air conditioning, work tables, and shock mitigating seats. A 1000 lb. lifting davit, tow post, fresh water washdown system and heavy duty triple axle trailer complete the package.

Seattle, WA: Research Support Services, Inc. provides technical expertise, boat support and research diving services to environmental consultants and engineering firms. The R/V Carolyn Dow is outfitted for the full range of near-shore sampling, surveying and diving operations. The a-frame travels the full length of the forward deck and can be folded for highway transport. A moon hole through the deck allows loads close to 2 tons with the a-frame oriented vertically.

Charlevoix, MI: The M/V King Cat is a personal sport boat operating on Lake Michigan. Twin 300hp Suzuki outboards deliver a top speed of 50 mph. The wheelhouse features a convertible settee with sleeping for two and a roof observation platform accessed by a ladder located on the house back. Perimeter safety railings and removable seating make the roof a great place to be on sunny days. A second control station located forward ensures precise maneuvering in close quarters.

Pte. Adolfo Lopez Mateos, B.C.S, Mexico: The Lopez Sportsman's Lodge offers visitors shallow water fly fishing trips and blue water game fishing trips. They chose a Munson Catamaran as the platform for their charter company because it offers rough water stability combined with a shallow draft. The Baja Californian is a serious fishing machine. The aft house back is home to a chest freezer powered by roof mounted solar panels and the front of the house features a full width bait tank

Grand Coulee, WA: The Grand Coulee Dam is a gravity dam on the Columbia River in Washington state that provides hydroelectric power irrigation. The dam supplies four power stations with a capacity of 6,809 MW. There is a floating boom on the lake side of the dam that protects the power stations from floating debris. When it breaks, dam personnel retrieve the loose ends with the dual bow davits and reconnect the ends using the hydraulic deck winch.

Wainwright, AK: The Umiaq Corporation operates the M/V Neakok Island in support of their onshore contingency response program contract with Shell Oil in the Chuckchi Sea. Designed to support hydraulic oil skimmers, the Neakok Island is outfitted with redundant PTO-driven hydraulic pumps. A hydraulic planetary deck winch is used to load equipment on to the forward deck and hydraulic lines are routed to the bow to allow the easy connection of skimmers and other equipment.

Lake Guntersville, AL: The M/V Blue Moon was designed to perform shoreline cleanup on the Tennessee River. Her owners also enjoy extended pleasure cruises. The wheelhouse is outfitted with an air conditioner/heater powered by an Onan 4Kw gasoline generator and features a head compartment with hot water shower. Side boarding doors and a 12v bow door allow easy access to the water during cleanup expeditions and a bow thruster ensures worry free docking in river currents

Maple Island, MI: True to its name the Maple Express is an island transport vessel between Maple Island and the mainland on Lake Michigan. Twin 350hp Yamaha V8's and a top speed of 52 mph keep transit time to a minimum and the enclosed cabin with forced air cabin heat, convertible settee and porti-potti keep comfort to a maximum. A 12v stern anchor capstan and pulpit were included to allow for beach anchoring at remote destinations.

Lake Powell, AZ: The Glen Canyon National Park Service responds to an average of 20 boat fires and 15 fuel spills a year. Staged at Wahweap Marina, the NPS fireboat is the primary resource for protecting the fuel docks, harbors and boats on Lake Powell. The fire pump system consists of a Darley LSE 1000 single stage pump feeding dual bow monitors. A foam system feeding a Hale H583 eductor can be fitted to any of the vessel's 2.5" water discharges. A bow thruster ensures stability while system is energized.
