Boat of the Week: This Modern 151-Foot Superyacht Looks Like It’s Straight Out of ‘The Great Gatsby’
Nadan is a thoroughly modern superyacht, built in 2009, but looks like a 1920s raconteur. we step aboard., howard walker, howard walker's most recent stories.

“There’s not a harbor or port in the world where Nadan wouldn’t spin heads and drop jaws,” Captain Andy Lytle told Robb Report during a tour of the yacht at this year’s Palm Beach International Boat Show.
The yacht was originally designed to cruise the low-bridge canals and rivers of the Eastern Seaboard, so she was given a slightly-unusual low-profile look. That changed when the yacht was sold in 2017 and renamed Nadan .
The new buyer, automotive engineer and philanthropist Klaus Bytzek, reportedly wasn’t happy with the low-profile look—he’s said to have likened the lines to a wedding cake lacking a top layer—so he sent it to Fort Lauderdale for a refit.
Bytzek commissioned Freivokh to add a tall-windowed, varnished wood “wheelhouse” on the top deck to give the yacht back its elegant proportions and regain a sense of balance. But instead of making it a proper wheelhouse with a wheel, Bytzek turned it into his “man cave”—though that 2000s term is less apt than what eventually looked like Jay Gatsby’s den.
Bytzek filled it with a velvet sofa, comfy side chairs, a full-width desk with elegant Tiffany lamps, and in a single modern nod, a big-screen TV. “It’s just the greatest place to get away from it all, enjoy some privacy and personal space away from guests,” says Lytle.
“ Nadan is a yacht that has had three great owners who’ve had the passion and the means to maintain her in perfect condition,” says Edmiston yacht brokerage director, Bruce Brakenhoff.
Why is the current owner selling? Brakenhoff explains the yachtsman has a new, bigger sailboat under construction, and three yachts is one too many. “Right now, she’s in magnificent condition with a turnkey crew, and ready to go,” he added.
With a draft of just six feet, Nadan is perfectly suited to cruising the skinny waters of the Bahamas where she’s been spending the winter months, before typically heading north to Maine for the summer.
Powered by a pair of 600-horsepower Caterpillar C18 diesels, the all-aluminum vessel has a friendly cruise speed of around 12 knots, with a top end of 14. With its 4,300-gallon fuel capacity, range is around 2,400 nautical miles at 10 knots.
“She has a fairly slender hull—the beam is just 26 feet—but she moves through the water beautifully, creating less than a foot of wake at cruising speed,” says Lytle. “When she was built, there was a real focus on reducing noise and vibration. She’s eerily quiet on the move.”
That relatively narrow hull does mean compromises when it comes to interior space, compared to more modern designs, though Lytle likens the interior to that of a classic sailing yacht. The cozy main salon features Art Deco-style sofas, and a stylish bar with ’20s-style chrome stools. That leads into a formal, wood-paneled dining room. Glass doors open out on to a drop-down terrace that’s perfect for a post-dinner Old Fashioned.
Outside entertaining spaces include a sizable aft deck with twin U-shaped lounges under shade, plus a lovely wraparound sofa above the fantail stern. On the top deck are sunpads in front of the new wheelhouse, and a hot tub, dining table, bar and outdoor kitchen behind.
Who will be the next owner? “Likely someone who buys with their heart rather than their head,” says Brakenhoff. “Someone maybe making the move from sail to power. But it will be someone looking for a unique, very special yacht.” The vessel is listed with Edmiston for $22.5 million.

Patterned after the classic and Presidential yachts of the 1920s, Sycara IV’s owners, Ray and Elsie Catena – whose previous yachts have crossed many a frontier – cast a fascinating challenge to her Naval Architect Bruce King, Yacht Designer Ken Freivokh, and Project Manager Steve Narkawicz. Theirs would be a “family yacht” patterned after a fan-tail schooner, to visit America’s waters such as the Great Lakes, Erie Barge Canal and many mighty waterways. This extraordinary ship would incorporate interior and hull designs reflecting the stellar comfort and style, the glamor and merry humor of that long-admired American era, the Roaring-20s. Yet, her Alustar aluminum construction; featuring extensive exterior joinery, would omit nothing of today’s advances; modern amenities, equipment, appliances, paraphernalia.
Their Design Team applauded such an ambitious goal. Then Burger’s skilled, state-of-the-art Crafts-Workers readily took up the gauntlet – ensuring an entertaining, happy outcome – and all delivered. The cleverness, the romance of yachting long ago, would charm with a stellar reappearance, sparkling in its newly reactivated, show-stopping appearance. Burger’s ages-long presence has ranged far and wide, most recently including the noted high-speed To-Kalon; the soon to launch Sea Owl – with Vripack; a 153’ tri-deck in-build; plus a massive Sparkman Stevens sailboat on the drawing boards (see YachtForums press release). Over the span of many productive years, Burger has built and marketed every boat style except an Express, and boasts many return customers, including this; another for the Catenas. Talk about satisfied customers...
Shown here, portions of Burger’s aforementioned, outstanding “woodwork”. She displays significant use of wood composite to achieve her classic exterior styling. The most notable example highlights her mast and bowsprit, yet this is not wood; it is carbon fiber. While Burger’s yacht productions since 1863 focus on custom yachts in aluminum, and/or steel up to 200’ – and garner international recognition for seaworthiness – the highly respected yacht builder now pioneers a new, peerless work; fashioned to be indistinguishable from highly finished wood. This glamorous, stunning motor yacht in all her glory, becomes a showcase in the tradition of famed “Corsair,” the spectacular yacht of J. P. Morgan, a legendary 20’s American financier.
Working in tandem, Awlgrip – with Burger engineers – developed a three-sequence system using the firm’s products to create a faux wood, paint finish for Sycara's mast and bow sprit, shown here pointing the way. It looks astonishingly genuine and will stay in service for an unlimited time, equal to any of the company’s remarkable coatings. Guiding the preparation/planning sequence were Jim Ruffolo; Burger President, and David Halcomb; Awlgrip Senior VP, who collaborated on the project to maintain the genuine look and feel of authentic wood on the yacht.
Sycara IV’s airy, aft party deck, again reflecting the 20’s’ dedication to fun and frolic, offers a delightful dining entertainment venue for eight, while astern a covered Ultra-leather couch makes room for onlookers; perhaps simply a wonderful spot to read, rest and relax. Or, Hey! all you Jazz-Bo’s and Fox Trotters! Clear the floor; Crank up the Victrola! Anyone for the Charleston, Shimmy, or Black Bottom? Not shown in this picture, but captured in the "details" segment following YF's review, a Nautical Structures stern passerelle. Her fantail stern features a hydraulic gangway that extends backwards for Euro-style docking. To facilitate deployment of the passarelle, a portion of the stern drops away, granting egress for the gangway. There is a Cramm side-boarding passerelle cleanly integrated to Sycara's port side as well.
Her bulwarks all around also hew to the tradition of timeless fashion. Above the bleached teak decking, highly-finished white sides rise up to the well polished mahogany tone of Madrone Burl, providing a handsome topping as well as a sturdy rim. Burger’s flag heralds a placid day at sea while the bowsprit urges full speed ahead. Notice; no discernible difference between the real wood on Sycara's caprail and the imitation wood (paint) of the bow sprit.
Sycara IV’s bow pulpit is dominated by an Ideal highly-polished and engraved, windlass anchoring system for hoisting a pair of stainless hooks into bow pockets. To keep rust from running renegade, a wash down system sprays the anchor chain in the hause pipes. Oversized for Sycara’s 151 feet, coupled with the aft boarding passarelle, the equipment would indicate the Catena’s plan to hang-on-the-hook, med-style, for extended stays.
Her exterior helm on the foredeck, seemingly carved into, or perhaps out of, the rich blending and period construct. It exhibits a fully activated forward post for the helm, or to control anchoring, as well as monitoring of anchorage performance. Sycara’s upper deck and bow deck air intakes are functional and like everything else, true to the era. Speaking of... check out that compass!
This aerial shot from high above the bridge deck emphasizes Sycara’s perfect balance of modern amenities and homage to yachting's past. Richly balanced harmonics – mahogany and teak against sterile white. Note the three-step-up jacuzzi spa tub. Quite civilized, for the Roaring 20's, yes?
Because Sycara's design doesn't lend itself to a hard top, a close-up of the bridge deck points out the use of materials to weather time; a perforated, teak table that won't hold water, outdoor furniture that never needs pampering; cabinet doors on the sundeck CNC routed from Eco Cell that are impervious to the elements - all very light for up-high weight control. Notice the transparent cut-out in the dining table. More on this later...
WHOoooop! A battery of Kahlenberg horns, trumpets if you will, formed from bronze and chrome plated, announce whatever the captain vehemently desires to say to the world. Just aft, Sycara’s sunpads flank the forward access door, while stainless rails wrap the area for safety. Come on now, it's not like anyone would come near those horns!
Here, a close-up view of the bridge deck's center couch and table, for taking in the horizon bathed in the freshest of sea air. Behind, the mammoth funnel is actually quite light. Fashioned from carbon fiber, it weighs in at an astonishing 80 lbs. And while it's period specific, it's not truly functional. It houses only the generator exhaust. Both the funnel and the mast are removable for low bridges.
Nesting her spotlight, camera, radar and nav lights high off the deck, here’s an added close-up of the mast with its clever "faux wood" paint application covering yet another desirable finish, the carbon fiber that forms the spine of the structure. See 'Details' following the review for close-ups on the finish.
Sycara IV’s tender, also fashioned in authentic Roaring 20’s style, is a genuine, varnished facsimile of the speed boats a smuggler might use for a few jugs of then-forbidden hooch. “Miss Sydney” is a very unique build in her own right, as she was hand-made by retired workers from another famous boat builder, Elco, specifically for Sycara. Period-correct, dark brown & burgundy seating faces a good old-fashioned analogue gauge cluster centered on the dash.
Cradled high for keel clearance and strapped to the aft deck, this aerial close-up of Miss Sydney reveals a roomy runabout thanks to a current generation Mercruiser I/O sterndrive, as opposed to a mid engine, straight shaft drive from the time period. Although it was a little too early for that water skiing invention thing, it's perfect for short trips ashore or a visit to the chi-chi fine yacht next door.
Now, Welcome to 2009! Our Roaring 20's reminisce will pause here, for the time being, as we leap forward up to date; to the current, today. While the decor follows her original design, with varnished teak and exotic woods, her leather Stidd Captain’s chair is premium. Right Now. Sporting ergonomic adjustments, anatomically correct, it shows off a blue ultra-leather plus a brilliant chrome pedestal, folding foot-rest. Top of the line in 2009. Sternward, a pair of comfortably cushioned armchairs allow for interested onlookers, traveling in time.
This overview accents the organization and exceptional color contrast of the wheelhouse. Varnished teak decking as a middle ground hue, between light ecru seating and rich dark browns of cabinetry and trim, add to the ocular comfort zone. Here we see the extension of her color theme: Madrone Burl and Macassar Ebony, with Paduak molding against glossy white. Although white backgrounds produce glare, sufficient contrast exists for sighting through the broad expanse of her windshields. One of Sycara's more unique features is an old-school defogging system. The side windows crank up and down to allow fresh air in. (see 'Details' following review)
Laid out to enhance the Captain’s command, the bridge-wide console features an Anshutz Gyro Compass, Simrad AP50001 Autopilot, KVH Tracphone, Ericson W25 Quad-band GSM Cell, ACR GlobalFix EPIRB, Furuno NavNet vx2 Radar/Chartplotter, Furuno DS80 Doppler Log, Furuno LH3000 Hailer, Furuno NX-700 Navtex Receiver, Northstar 6100i GPS, Furuno FA-150 AIS, Furuno Fax 408 and Icom IC-M604 VHF. Three Hatteland TFT monitors display the ship's information, while a Pelco CCTV system supplies visuals through Sycara's back-up camera installed on the ceiling of the aft deck, as well as her main mast, to aid in docking.
Centered on the main deck, just aft of the wheelhouse, the Master stateroom follows her rich combination of light tan, Madrone Burl brown and Macassar Ebony dark chocolate, all exquisitely arranged and catering to the Owner’s relaxation and comfort. The Master berth is king-size, facing fore and aft. Overhead lighting for the raised berth is provided with small spotlights, adjustable for reading. Its luxurious headboard upholstery, medium tawny brown, is backed by a wall-size mirror which virtually expands the visual scope. (note: Master Bath image not available)

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital
There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.
How to find the right boat?
There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.
Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.
This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.
Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such option offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).
If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.
Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.
How to buy tickets?
Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.
“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!” wrote (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.
Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.
Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.
Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.
Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as this offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.
This website (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other website sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.
Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.
“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.
There are two main boarding piers in the city center: Hotel Ukraine and Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.
Where to sit onboard?
Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.
The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.
Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.
There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Patterned after the classic and Presidential yachts of the 1920s, Sycara IV's owners, Ray and Elsie Catena - whose previous yachts have crossed many a frontier - cast a fascinating challenge to her Naval Architect Bruce King, Yacht Designer Ken Freivokh, and Project Manager Steve Narkawicz.
#34: Sirona III—185'4" Northeastern car dealer extraordinaire Ray Catena sold this Oceanfast, formerly known as Sycara III, a few months ago in preparation for taking delivery of another yacht next year. The proud new owner wasted no time in putting her to good use, docking her outside the American Airlines Arena in Miami in June to catch the Heat in the NBA playoffs.
Catena says, "but we still needed equipment to allow world travel." In addition, the hull— designed by Bruce King, who's renowned for sailing yachts—tapers down to the keel. The reason: Catena wanted the yacht to have a wake of less than one foot while cruising and be able to cut through the water with minimal resistance.
