Where is ozark filmed filming locations explained.

Take a look at Ozark filming locations to see where Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, and Julia Garner filmed Netflix’s Ozark season 4.

Netflix’s hit crime drama has now finished and the  Ozark season 4 filming locations continued to showcase the Atlanta area. With an incredible cast including Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, and Julia Garner, the show has been a massive success for the streaming service with Ozark season 4 gaining a whopping 3 billion viewers in the first week of its release. The show's main storylines and unanswered questions were mostly settled in the ending of  Ozark season 4 part 2 . However, one key question remains in the minds of fans: where was  Ozark  filmed throughout the show's long run?

Ozark begins in Chicago with corporate-accountant-turned-criminal Marty Byrde. After becoming involved with the Navarro cartel, Ozark’s Marty Byrde moves his family to Missouri’s Ozark Mountains in a desperate attempt to keep himself and his family alive. The Byrde family integrates into the sleepy lakeside town, laundering money for Navarro through local Byrde businesses despite setbacks that cost them dearly.

Though set in the Ozark Mountains, the  Ozark season 4 filming locations weren't limited to here alone. Netflix’s hit show is filmed mainly in Georgia, specifically the Atlanta area, with some street scenes also shot in Chicago. Here’s a list of every filming location used by Ozark including season 4.

Lickety Splitz Night Club – Norcross, GA

Introduced back in  Ozark  season 1 , the Lickety Splitz was one of the first businesses acquired by the Byrdes. Ozark 's infamous strip club is actually an abandoned building at 6025 Oakbrook Parkway in the northern Atlanta suburb of Norcross. Marty acquired the business by getting Ruth to steal the ownership documents from Bobby Dean, who is murdered by his boss Darlene Snell shortly thereafter. After the heist, Marty hires Ruth to manage the nightclub. Though not one of the many  Ozark  season 4 filming locations, the Lickety Splitz deserves a mention because it's where Ruth begins to transform into a major player.

The Byrde House – Flowery Branch, GA

The iconic Byrde family house is one of the more gorgeous Ozark  season 4 filming locations, and it's actually located in Flowery Branch, another suburb north of Atlanta that's nestled on the southern shore of Lake Lanier. After relocating from Chicago, the Byrde family moves into the home and remains there after Buddy's death, until  Ozark's  divisive finale  during which Jonah kills detective Mel Sattem to protect the family, further burning the image of the Byrde family home into the minds of viewers. Indeed, Jonah's actions are an indication that he has accepted this life of crime, and Marty and Wendy standing by approvingly affirms what viewers have known all along: the Byrdes are the real villains in  Ozark.

Omar Navarro’s Estate – Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, GA

Probably the most impressive of the various  Ozark  season 4 filming locations, Omar Navarro's Mexican estate is actually the Westview Cemetery in the western portion of the city of Atlanta. Quite appropriately, the Navarro cartel headquarters is filmed in a literal cemetery. Westview Cemetery's gorgeous stone mausoleum and abbey provide the perfect location for when Marty and Wendy arrive at the Navarro estate in the Ozark season 3 finale to a bloody welcome, as Navarro lawyer Helen Pierce gets killed in front of the Byrdes, whose baptism in blood pulls them closer to the cartel's inner circle.  Ozark  season 4 shows more of Navarro's estate when Omar tortures Marty after tasking him to run things in Mexico and during scenes involving Javi Elizondro and his mother Camila, who ends up running the cartel from the same estate.

The Missouri Belle Casino – Stone Mountain, GA

Though the interiors of the Byrde’s casino, The Missouri Belle, were shot at Atlanta’s Eagle Rock Studios, a riverboat at Atlanta’s Stone Mountain Park serves as the exterior Ozark filming location. The riverboat casino serves as a way for the Byrdes to launder money more efficiently money for Omar Navarro, and the Ozark filming location is featured prominently since it gets built, serving as the location where viewers saw almost every single member of the  Ozark  season 4 cast . Memorable scenes from this  Ozark filming location include when Ruth pushes Frank Jr. from the boat in Ozark  season 3, and also when he retaliates and beats her in front of the casino. In  Ozark  season 4, The Missouri Belle served as the background for FBI auditor Maya Miller trying to recruit Marty, Ruth and Rachel's schemes against Wendy, and the scene where Camila Elizondro pressured Clare Shaw into revealing that Ruth killed her son Javi.  Ozark   may have ended, but these filming locations will forever be fondly remembered by those who've followed arguably the greatest antihero crime series.

Talk about casino destinations and you’ll most likely think of Las Vegas, Atlantic City or, if you are travelling outside the US, maybe Monaco or Macau.

Amelia Belle Casino

Yet what are called “land based” or “bricks and mortar” casinos to differentiate them from the online versions are not necessarily on land or made of bricks and mortar.

We refer, of course, to riverboat casinos, a little slice of Americana that’s as American as Super Bowl Sunday or Thanksgiving turkey. Riverboat casinos conjure up images of the Mississippi and Mark Twain complete with white suit, top hat and cigar. There are more than 60 riverboat casinos operating in the USA and every single one of them has a story to tell. Here, we highlight a handful of the very best.

The Grand Victoria, Elgin

Our first stop is not on the Mississippi at all, but on the Fox River in Elgin, 50 miles north west of Chicago . Owned and operated by Caesars Entertainment, the Grand Victoria really is a slice of Las Vegas on the Illinois waterfront.  With more than 1,000 slots and video poker terminals and 36 tables, there’s a great choice of games.

If all that gambling whets your appetite, there are four dining options on board, including the highly rated Buckingham’s Steakhouse and Lounge.

Casino Queen, Marquette

The Casino Queen would look like a lifeboat if it was moored alongside the Grand Victoria, but that is all part of its charm. It offers a more intimate and personalized experience, and although there are only eight tables, they host an intriguing variety of games that are not commonly found in land (or water) based casinos. If you know how to gamble online in the US , you’ve probably seen fusion blackjack and 21+3 at US online casinos. The Casino Queen gives you an opportunity to play them in real casino surroundings.

When you step ashore, there is an adjacent 31-acre entertainment complex with a variety of attractions and a huge choice of dining options.

The Amelia Belle, Amelia

At last, we arrive in Louisiana, where the Amelia Belle lies nestled in the Avoca Island Cutoff waterway. This classic four-story riverboat looks like it has stepped straight out of a photograph from the turn of the 20 th century. When it is lit up at night, it takes your breath away.

At the tables, poker is the order of the day. The casino offers Mississippi stud, 3-card poker and Texas Holdem. There are also 800 slot games, while the Fanduel sportsbook has self-service betting kiosks, a wall full of television screens, and a huge video wall to show the biggest events.

Sam’s Town, Shreveport

On the opposite side of Louisiana, Sam’s Town could not be more different to the Amelia Belle. This floating leisure complex houses a hotel, health spa, sauna and live entertainment venue.

The casino offers more than 1,000 slots and 30 table games that include blackjack, roulette, baccarat, Let it Ride and Craps No More.

Is The Missouri Belle Riverboat Casino From Ozark A Real Place?

Marty Byrde staring

The tale of a man relocating his family from the big city to a more rural area is usually a page from the sitcom playbook. But " Ozark " is anything but a laugh-a-minute romp. The crime family drama follows Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) as he's forced to relocate his family to Missouri and launder extraordinary amounts of money for a drug cartel. Over the course of the series, things have become unbearably intense, and moral compasses have steadily eroded among the characters, all of which have helped make "Ozark" a must-see Netflix series.

The Navarro Cartel in "Ozark" is no pushover, and panic sets in during the early seasons as Marty and his wife Wendy (Laura Linney) struggle to figure out an operation big enough for their money laundering goals. That all changes in Season 3 when the two enter the riverboat casino business. They open the Missouri Belle Riverboat Casino, which proves to be a huge success and helps further the family's descent into the criminal lifestyle. This particular story of a riverboat casino used to move drug money is a work of fiction (pending the days we read about it as headline news). But that doesn't necessarily mean that the riverboat as seen in "Ozark" is fake.

The casino is a real riverboat

While the use of exterior shots of the Lakes of the Ozarks would suggest that the series is filmed in Missouri, the actual truth is that much of "Ozark" is shot a little further south in the Peach State. Per The Atlanta Journal-Constitution , the Netflix series has used various counties in the Atlanta, Georgia, area for filming. This also includes Stone Mountain, Georgia, where the actual Missouri Belle Riverboat used as the Byrde's casino is located. Via Pop Culture , the riverboat's location is at a business called Atlanta Adventure Tours, where fans can likely catch a glimpse of the boat while on a bike ride or kayaking the river. However, don't expect to encounter a real casino. The series produces the interior shots elsewhere, as the actual boat doesn't have anything related to gambling other than the signs featured in the show.

The Missouri Belle isn't the only riverboat fans can visit. An attempt to see the Big Muddy Riverboat, which also comes under the ownership of the Byrdes during Season 3, requires a trip to a Joe's Crab Shack in Savannah, Georgia (via Atlas of Wonders ). As to why the series would choose to film in Georgia instead of its story setting, the reason is likely because Georgia is a great cost-effective state for filming. The location offers some juicy tax incentives to filmmakers. And they are too good to pass up. For instance, in 2021, Georgia granted $1.2 billion in tax credits for numerous filming productions (via The Hollywood Reporter ).

Fans couldn't help but notice a small detail about the casino's name

Even though it's a front for some illegal money laundering, the Missouri Belle Casino is a catchy name. If the riverboat were a legit gambling operation, we're sure that commercial that Marty and Wendy made during Season 3 would probably bring in big business. Who wouldn't want to gamble the night away at the charming spot? The answer to that is fans who have been following the disturbing and heartbreaking trek of Marty and his family. But in case binging episodes of the Netflix show isn't enough to show that all is not good with the casino and the family, maybe we should think about its name.

Fans on a Reddit post , upvoted over 400 times, noted that when sounding out the name of the Byrde's riverboat casino, it sounds like the word "Miserable." The realization has delighted fans, and it has also caused some to draw a parallel between "Ozark" and another classic Jason Bateman series. "'Arrested Development's wordplay must follow Jason," u/RedTexas23 said. Fans have already noticed a few "Arrested Development" references in "Ozark," with some no doubt theorizing that the two shows are linked despite their starkly different tones. We're sure this clever riverboat wordplay will add more fuel to that raging theory fire.

'Ozark' production designer David J. Bomba

Coming aboard Ozark in Season 3, production designer David Bomba’s challenge was to tap into the style established for the series’ first two seasons, while honing exciting visual elements that would increase the scope of its world.

Created by Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams, the crime drama centers on Wendy (Laura Linney) and Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), a married couple who are forced to move their family to the Ozarks, when a money-laundering scheme goes awry.

A fan of the series prior to his involvement, Bomba came onto Ozark with a clear understanding of its world, as well as its striking aesthetic. “The tone of the show, to me, it’s very evident,” he says, in the latest installment of Deadline’s Production Value video series, which was recorder prior to quarantine. “It’s very blue, it’s very gray; it’s always cloudy.”

Exciting for the designer was the prospect of working within an impressive array of sets created for Seasons 1 and 2, including the Byrde’s lakeside estate and the Snell house, where one of the series’ most threatening local criminals resides. In the case of the latter location, “we’re not allowed to film at the exterior anymore,” Bomba says, “because the owners didn’t like the fact that we killed somebody there in Season 2.”

In bringing new elements to Season 3, Bomba hoped to carve out his own part of Ozark , finding the greatest opportunity to do so through the creation of the Missouri Belle. First introduced at the tail end of Season 2, this riverboat casino emerges in the narrative as a vehicle for efficient money laundering, which will allow the Byrdes to stay under the radar, while continuing to please their boss—the terrifying leader of a Mexican drug cartel.

In pursuit of the right designs for the interior and exterior of the boat, Bomba embarked on a real-world research trip. “[I] went to Indiana and Missouri, and saw two offshore gambling facilities,” he says. “One actually was from New Orleans, where I grew up, so I knew all about offshore gambling. But I wanted it in the context of this show.”

Looking specifically at a “Victorian, Mark Twain-ish style boat” and a Missouri barge outfitted for gambling, the production designer then presented his findings to executive producer, director and star Jason Bateman. “I put up boards—‘This is patterns, this is color, this is tone’—and I said, ‘I know that this show is very blue and very gray.’ And he goes, ‘I want to get outside of that,’” Bomba shares. “I said, ‘What do you think? Like reds and golds?’ And he goes, ‘That’s where I want to go.’”

The designer approached his pitch to Bateman with the understanding that the casino would naturally be different, in its aesthetics, than any environment seen on Ozark before. “It’s a completely different world. Any time you go into a casino, it’s an assault to the senses,” he notes. “It’s lots of bling-bling, lots of blinking lights.”

To create a realistic casino environment, Bomba would have to jump through a number of legal and logistical hoops. In terms of visual elements present within the set, casino tables were the most simple to put together, but slot machines were an entirely different matter. Engaging in a dialogue with the Gaming Commissions of Las Vegas and Georgia—where the show is shot—the designer wondered, “How do we get these things? How are we going to do this?”

If Bomba were to dress the set with real slot machines, borrowed from actual casinos, he’d have to “Greek out all of the graphics”—and given the glow that slot machines emit, there was the additional question of how the machines would jibe with the lighting of the interior set. “We imported 10 slots to begin with, just to get a feel for it, to see what the lights would do,” Bomba says. “[We] tested them; nothing worked.” Ultimately, the solution to these problems was to manufacture more than 160 slot machines specifically for the show.

Working within the art department for two decades, Bomba has designed a number of acclaimed films, including 2017’s Mudbound , as well as prestige series like Godless . In the era of streaming and ubiquitious screens, the designer has approached his work with the understanding that he can’t control how it will be viewed. “People might watch it on their cell phone; people might watch what you’ve done on their iPad; they might have a home theater,” he says. “[But] I’m not going to deliver anything but feature-quality sets that you know are realistic.”

While realistic production design is a must for the viewing experience, Bomba notes that it’s also in service of the actors at hand, on any given show. “Sometimes, the time frame is such, where you’ve got to slap things together and put it up. [But] I want…to deliver sets [where] actors can do what they need to do,” he says. “Because the acting in [ Ozark ] is phenomenal.”

History of Riverboat Gambling in the USA

When riverboat gaming first took the USA by storm, paddlewheel riverboats had long been used on the Mississippi River as a means of passenger and freight transportation. With the advent of the railways, riverboats saw their utility decline and started to be viewed as entertainment and leisure vessels by the public.

Boat cruises were popular for their live music and dancing, but also as a way to escape the crowded cities across the US. As these boats became entertainment hubs, gambling gained popularity on board . Initially, gambling was limited to card and table games, but slot machines were eventually added to most riverboats. Nowadays, players in states with legal online gambling can enjoy the best real money online casinos . For example, if they are within the state of New Jersey, they can enjoy the best online casinos in NJ without leaving the comfort of their own homes.

As the Mississippi River served as the border of several states, it created the perfect legal gray area. In 1903, several states simultaneously softened their stance on gambling due to the economic potential that it offered. Thus began the golden era of riverboat gambling . The first casinos were required to be located on ships that would have to sail away from the dock. In some parts, gambling was only allowed once the ship was sailing.

The Lyndon B. Johnson Era

The administration under Lyndon. B Johnson placed significant restrictions on what riverboat casinos could legally do. In 1951, the Transportation of Gambling Devices Act was passed, which made the transportation of gambling devices across state borders illegal. This placed limitations on how riverboats could operate.

Riverboat casinos were first approved by state lawmakers in the late 20th century by those states which prohibited gambling on land. In the 1980s, lawmakers had the vision to revive the golden era of riverboat gambling. Several states simultaneously introduced laws that permitted gambling on water vessels, creating the framework under which they still operate today. Iowa was the first state to fully legalize riverboat gambling . Apart from Iowa, Riverboat gambling is legal in Mississippi, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, and Missouri too.

Riverboat Casino Economies

In 2010, there were 10 operational riverboat casinos. This number might pale in comparison to the number of land casinos in the United States, but riverboat gambling saw a massive boom during the 2010s. In 2018, there were 63 riverboat casinos in operation across the legal states. This spike in growth suggests that riverboat casinos have a distinct appeal, separate from that of land-based casinos.

Riverboats make massive contributions to local economies, as all winnings are taxed by the state. Before you start playing, make sure to acquaint yourself with the gambling commission of the state in which you are planning on playing. In Iowa, if you win over $1,200, you’ll be paying an eye-watering 15% as tax to the state and 5% to the local community, whereas in Iowa, the tax rate stands at a little over 5%.

Proponents of riverboat casinos frequently argue that these floating casinos increase employment rates in the communities where the boats are docked. To support the requirements of large floating casinos, communities are engaged in the development of restaurants, shopping, accommodation, recreation, and other hospitality facilities to capitalize on the spending power of visiting tourists .

Since state legislatures were never willing to give up on the revenues generated by casinos. In a unique ruling in 1998, courts had stated that boats had to be “solely over and in contact with the surface” of rivers, thereby eliminating the need for actual floating vessels. Over time, the rules were amended to allow the construction of casinos on stilts , with the caveat that they had to be located in navigable water.

Fun Facts About Riverboat Casinos

Before we get into the list of top riverboat gambling destinations, we would like to share a few fun historical facts and trivia that you might find interesting. These facts might even make good conversation starters should you get down to maritime gaming.

When riverboat gambling was legalized for the first time in the late 1980s, different states put forward varying cosmetic requirements . In an inconvenience to casino owners, all Louisiana riverboat casinos were required to be constructed exactly like the 19th-century paddlewheel steamboats, for reasons unknown. To run a legal riverboat casino in Indiana, vessels had to have a minimum length of 150 feet and a minimum carrying capacity of 500 passengers.

There have also been violent incidents associated with riverboat gambling. As riverboat casinos operated on the water, it was often thought that they were somehow exempt from the laws of the land. Historians have discovered several instances of individuals punishing cheaters and thieves by taking the law into their own hands. in 1835, five gamblers were lynched in Vicksburg Mississippi when they were caught cheating.

Some of the biggest reforms to riverboat gambling were brought on – unfortunately – by Hurricane Katrina. Before 2005, most riverboat casinos only allowed gambling when the vessel was sailing. However, this was not realistic all year round, as boats could not leave their docks in unpredictable weather . After Katrina, most state laws dictate that riverboat casinos need to be docked for safety.

Riverboat Casinos Today

The Mississippi River region is still the hotbed of all riverboat gambling in the United States. Today, there are over 20 riverboat casinos that gamblers can choose from. Let’s take a look at some of the best riverboat casinos today. In order to make this list, the casinos that we evaluated have had to meet stringent requirements of variety, novelty, hospitality, and service.

The Amelia Belle, Louisiana

One of the best riverboat casinos in Louisiana that we recommend are owned by Boyd Gaming, the casino giant from Paradise Nevada. The Amelia Belle is located in Amelia Louisiana , between Houma and Morgan City, built on the edge of the water in the Avoca Island Cutoff waterway.

The Amelia Belle could easily be considered one of the beautiful casinos in this guide. Spread out over four stories, it sports a turn-of-the-century look and appears stunning when illuminated at night. The Amelia Belle has over 800 slot machines and 15 table games .

The Amelia Belle recently added dining options to feed the hunger of visiting gamblers. If you are visiting, drop by the Bayou Cafe on the first floor to grab a quick bite. The Amelia Belle is open 24×7 on the weekends and you can expect games like Blackjack, Texas Hold ‘Em, Three Card Poker, and Electronic Roulette.

Grand Victoria Casino, Illinois

The El Dorado Resorts-owned Grand Victoria Casino is located on the Fox River in Elgin, Illinois. The Grand Victoria stands out from the other top riverboat casinos in this guide as it has an abundance of restaurants on board . Before we look into their gastronomical offerings, let’s examine gambling aboard the Grand Victoria.

The Grand Victoria offers a gambling experience unmatched by others in the area. With a casino floor that covers 29850 square feet , you could spend hours at the Grand Victoria without going through everything that’s on offer. The casino even has a High Limit Room for big bettors.

Within the casino, you’ll find 1000 of the most popular slot machines and video poker games. You can also try your hand at 29 Vegas-style table games, a poker room, a lounge, and seasonal entertainment venues . There are also several well-established hotels near Grand Victoria, in case you want to make your excursion a multi-day affair.

While most riverboat casinos were slow to catch up to fine dining experiences, the Grand Victoria is ahead of the curve. You can indulge yourself at four restaurants on board named Buckinghams Steakhouse and Lounge, Indulge Show Kitchen Buffer, Crave Deli and Prime Burger house.

Casino Queen Marquette

Casino Queen Marquette is a smaller riverboat casino owned by CQ Holdings. Thanks to its small size and limited capacity, Queen Marquette offers a more exclusive and personalized experience in comparison to other top riverboat casinos. Located next to a 31-acre site, the casino has a marina, an enclosed dining pavilion on the first floor, and an entertainment center on the second floor.

Since it is a small and quaint casino, you will only find 8 live tables at Queen Marquette. This is balanced out with the provision of 566 slot machines and video poker games . Some of the games you can look forward to playing at Queen Marquette are Mississippi Stud, Ultimate Texas Hold ‘em, Blackjack and Fusion Roulette.

Ameristar Casino MIssissippi

The Ameristar Casino is located on the banks of the famed Mississippi River. It is conveniently located on the Mississippi-Louisiana border just off Interstate 20. The casino is part of a much larger complex featuring a hotel, three restaurants, a blues bar, a cabaret, and a full-service RV Park.

The Ameristar Casino has 70,000 square feet of the casino floor. You can enjoy games at 27 tables or 1571 gaming machines. There are also 10 live-action poker tables. The casino has been designed to retain the atmosphere of a 19th-century gambling boat .

Are Ozark’s Missouri Belle and The Big Muddy Real Casinos?

Dhruv Trivedi of Are Ozark’s Missouri Belle and The Big Muddy Real Casinos?

When Marty and Wendy Byrde first move to the Missouri Ozarks in ‘Ozark’ season 1 , they struggle to find businesses big enough to launder cartel money without raising suspicion. That all changes once their casinos come into the picture, and by season 3 , Marty and Wendy are the face and proud shareholders of two casinos — the Missouri Belle and The Big Muddy. A lot of action goes down in these two joints, especially the former, which becomes the site of a massive FBI forensic accounting investigation. Ever wondered whether the casinos in ‘Ozark’ are real? We’ve got the story!

Are Missouri Belle and The Big Muddy Real Casinos?

No, Wendy and Marty Byrde’s shady casinos funded by drug cartel money are, as you might have guessed, not real. Any criminal activities depicted on the show aside, the Missouri Belle and The Big Muddy casinos are also not actual casinos, though the boats used to depict them are very real. In fact, The Big Muddy Casino is actually depicted using the gorgeous Georgia Queen river cruise boat, which is famous for its dinner cruises on the Savannah River.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Savannah Riverboat Cruises (@savannahriverboat)

For the show’s filming, the Georgia Queen was moored in front of Joe’s Crab Shack at 504 East River Street in Savannah, Georgia . Due to its already gorgeous facade, the real-life boat was only marginally altered to make it look like a floating casino.

Meanwhile, the boat used to depict the Missouri Belle casino dwells all the way in Stone Mountain Park, Georgia. The waterside building, which forms part of the Missouri Belle casino on the show, is real enough and can be found at 1000 Robert E Lee Boulevard in Stone Mountain. The structure seemingly houses the Atlanta Adventure Tours company.

The interiors of the fictional casinos are reconstructed on soundstages at the Eagle Rock Studios Atlanta, which can be found at 6205 Best Friend Road in the city of Norcross in Gwinnett County, Georgia. This is understandable, considering the lengthy sequences that play out inside the Missouri Belle.

Interestingly, the most authentic aspect of the casinos in ‘Ozark’ could be the matter of the casino licenses, which is explored in season 2 . With their sights set on opening a casino to greatly boost their money-laundering business, the first hurdle for the Byrdes to cross is raising the number of casino licenses given out in Missouri from thirteen to fourteen. As of writing this article, the total number of casino licenses in Missouri is actually limited to thirteen.

History of Riverboat Gambling on the Mississippi

riverboat casino movie

The South has always been at least somewhat friendly to gambling due to the rise of the riverboat in the early 1900s. Games of chance were kept on the water so that anti-gambling laws wouldn’t apply. Games like poker and roulette took place on grand riverboats, even if the ship never left the dock.

This tradition was greatly reduced when the railroad became the main way to transport both goods and people, but some riverboats remain in the South today. In Mississippi and Louisiana, especially, retired steamboats are now used for river cruising and for gambling in places like Vicksburg.

Online casinos are one of the latest innovations in the casino industry. Since the rise of technological advancements, they are solid competitors to U.S.-based land-based casinos. Many gambling restrictions still remain in the South and across the ocean. For example, every casino in the UK gets licensed by the UK Gambling Commission.

The regulations of the U.S. online casino market have led to developers existing who only get associated with U.S. casinos and are not available at UK-based gaming sites. Some famous developers for the U.S. market are RealTime Gaming, Relax Gaming, Rival Gaming, Elk Studios and Betsoft.

But for those players who want the old-time experience of dressing up and boarding a grand steamboat, the South has plenty for them. Just look along the Mississippi River from Missouri to Louisiana. According to Visit Mississippi , the first steamboat to travel the Mississippi River was the New Orleans, whose October 1811 maiden voyage began in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The New Orleans stopped in Natchez in December 1811 before continuing to its final port in New Orleans.

Wealthy Southerners could afford to travel by steamboat, and some were ornately decorated in the Victorian style. The riverboat casinos that remain today continue that grand tradition, with music playing onboard, restaurants available to players and even live entertainment offered regularly.

So, if you want to step back in time and experience the old South by river—without all the outlaws and pirates —consider a riverboat cruise or evening of gaming.

Tropicana Las Vegas casino that hosted James Bond in ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ closes after 67 years to make room for an MLB stadium

People walk outside of the Tropicana hotel-casino on March 28, 2024, in Las Vegas.

In the 1971 film “Diamonds are Forever,” James Bond stays in a swanky suite at the Tropicana Las Vegas.

“I hear that the Hotel Tropicana is quite comfortable,” Agent 007 says.

It was the Tropicana’s heyday. The lavish casino was a frequent haunt of the legendary Rat Pack, while its past under the mob cemented its place in Vegas lore.

But after welcoming guests for 67 years, the doors to the Las Vegas Strip’s third-oldest casino will be chained shut at noon Tuesday and demolition is slated for October to make room for a $1.5 billion  Major League Baseball stadium  — part of the city’s latest rebrand as a hub for sports entertainment.

“It’s time. It’s ran its course,” Charlie Granado, a bartender at the Tropicana for 38 years, said of the casino’s closure. “It makes me sad but on the other hand, it’s a happy ending.”

The population of Clark County, which includes Las Vegas, had just surpassed 100,000 when the Tropicana opened on a Strip surrounded by vast, open desert. It cost $15 million to build three stories with 300 rooms split into two wings.

Its manicured lawns and elegant showroom earned it the nickname “ Tiffany of the Strip.” There was a towering tulip-shaped fountain near the entrance, mosaic tiles and mahogany-paneled walls throughout.

Black and white photographs  from that time give a view into what it was like inside the Tropicana at its height, when it frequently hosted A-list stars in its showroom — from Elizabeth Taylor and Debbie Reynolds to Frank Sinatra and  Sammy Davis Jr .

Mel Tormé  and Eddie Fisher performed at the Tropicana. Gladys Knight and Wayne Newton have held residencies there.

In a city known for reinvention, the Tropicana itself underwent major changes as Las Vegas evolved. Two hotel towers were added in later years. In 1979, a $1 million green-and-amber stained glass ceiling was installed above the casino floor.

Barbara Boggess was 26 when she started working at the Tropicana in 1978 as a linen room attendant.

“The Tropicana was pretty much sitting here all by itself,” Boggess said. “It was desert all around. It used to take me 10 minutes to get to work. Now it takes an hour.”

Now 72, Boggess has seen the Tropicana through its many iterations. There was the 1980s rebrand as “The Island of Las Vegas,” with a swim-up blackjack table at the pool, and the South Beach-themed renovation completed in 2011.

Today, only the low-rise hotel room wings remain of the original Tropicana structure. Yet the casino still conjures up vintage Vegas nostalgia.

“It does give an old Vegas vibe. When you first walk in, you see the stained glass and the low ceilings,” JT Seumala, a Las Vegas resident who visited the casino in March, said. “It does feel like you step back in time for a moment.”

Seumala and his husband stayed at the Tropicana as a way to pay tribute to the landmark. They roamed the casino floor and hotel, turning down random hallways and exploring the convention center. They tried their luck at blackjack and roulette and made conversation with a cocktail server who had worked there for 25 years. At the end of their stay, they pocketed a few red $5 poker chips to remember the casino.

Behind the scenes of the casino’s opening decades ago, the Tropicana had ties to organized crime, largely through reputed mobster Frank Costello.

Weeks after the grand opening, Costello was shot in the head in New York. Police found in his coat pocket a piece of paper with the Tropicana’s exact earnings figure. The note also mentioned “money to be skimmed” for Costello’s associates, according to  a post  on The Mob Museum’s website looking back on the Tropicana’s history.

By the 1970s, federal authorities investigating mobsters in Kansas City charged more than a dozen mob operatives with conspiring to skim nearly $2 million in gambling revenue from Las Vegas casinos, including the Tropicana. Charges connected to the Tropicana alone resulted in five convictions.

But the famed hotel-casino also saw many years of mob-free success. It was home to the city’s longest running show, “Folies Bergere.” The topless revue, imported from Paris, featured what is now one of the most recognizable Las Vegas icons: the feathered showgirl.

During its nearly 50-year run, “Folies Bergere” featured elaborate costumes and stage sets, original music that at one time was played by a live orchestra, line dancers, magic shows, acrobats and comedy.

The cabaret was featured in the 1964 Elvis Presley film “Viva Las Vegas.” Magicians Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn got their start in the show.

Today, the site at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip intersects with a major thoroughfare named for the Tropicana. It is surrounded by the towering megaresorts that Las Vegas is now known for.

But nearby are the homes of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders, who left Oakland, California, in 2020, and the city’s first major league professional team, the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights.

The ballpark planned for the land beneath the Tropicana is expected to open in 2028.

“There’s a lot of controversy as far as if it should stay or should it go,” Seumala said. “But the thing that I do love about Vegas is that it’s always reinventing itself.”

Business | Bally’s Chicago revenue up 12.7% in March as casino company weighs buyout offer

Bally's Medinah Temple casino in Chicago on Feb. 15, 2024. (Antonio Perez/Chicago Tribune)

As Bally’s navigates a buyout offer from its largest shareholder, credit downgrades from ratings agencies and an $800 million funding gap to build its planned $1.7 billion Chicago casino, business at the temporary facility continues to ramp up.

Revenue at the Medinah Temple casino grew 12.7% in March to more than $11.1 million in adjusted gross receipts, according to data released Thursday by the Illinois Gaming Board. Bally’s Chicago ranked fourth in revenue among the state’s 15 casinos.

Admissions to Bally’s Chicago increased 11.6% to nearly 118,000 visitors, ranking second behind Rivers Casino Des Plaines, the state’s busiest and top-billing casino.

Rivers welcomed more than 271,000 visitors and generated nearly $47.8 million in adjusted gross receipts in March, according to Gaming Board data.

For the first quarter, Bally’s Chicago generated nearly $30.3 million in adjusted gross receipts and more than $3 million in local tax revenue, according to Gaming Board data.

That is still far off the pace needed to meet Chicago’s revenue target for its first casino. The city has projected Bally’s to generate $243 million in adjusted gross receipts and $35 million in local gaming taxes this year.

“We continue to build momentum month-over-month and we expect it to continue,” said Soo Kim, chairman of Bally’s and founding partner of its largest shareholder, New York hedge fund Standard General.

As Bally’s Chicago gains traction at its temporary River North facility, which opened in September, larger questions swirl around the company and ambitious plans to build its flagship permanent casino in the city.

In February, Bally’s told the Nevada Gaming Control Board the company needed to bridge an $800 million funding gap to cover $1.1 billion in remaining costs to build the casino, hotel and entertainment complex at the Chicago Tribune’s 30-acre River West publishing site.

“We are proud to offer an outstanding experience to our guests in the Medinah Temple and look forward to this summer when construction will begin on our world-class entertainment complex along the Chicago River,” Mark Wong, vice president and general manager of Bally’s Chicago, said in a news release Thursday.

Bally’s is expected to open the permanent casino in 2026.

Both Fitch Ratings and Moody’s Investors Service recently downgraded Bally’s credit rating over concerns that the permanent Chicago casino will leave the company highly leveraged and less stable financially.

Last month, Kim’s Standard General submitted an offer to buy out the rest of the stockholders at $15 per share, valuing the company at about $648 million.

That bid is less than 40% of what Standard General was willing to pay two years ago in an unsuccessful attempt to buy the company. Standard General owns 23% of Bally’s outstanding shares.

The Bally’s board formed a special committee last month and retained Macquarie Capital as its financial adviser to evaluate the offer and explore strategic alternatives to the Standard General proposal.

Kim declined to comment on the buyout offer Thursday.

Earlier this month, minority investor K&F Growth Capital, which owns less than 1% of Bally’s stock, weighed in with a letter urging the board to reject Standard General’s “woefully undervalued proposal.” It also suggested that Bally’s “offload or de-risk the Chicago project” by bringing in a partner to develop and operate the permanent casino.

“We still stand by the plan outlined in our letter,” Dan Fetters, co-managing partner of California-based K&F, said in an email Thursday.

Bally’s stock closed at $13.60 per share Thursday, representing a market cap of $545 million.

The identical challenges were filed this week in appellate courts across the country. They call the Federal Railroad Administration's new rule arbitrary, capricious and an illegal abuse of discretion. The rail industry has long opposed such a rule. They say safety data doesn't support it and crew size should be determined by negotiations. But regulators and unions argue that there are clear safety benefits to having two people operating trains because they can keep each other alert and the conductor can respond immediately to any problems.
