USING A BOAT LIFT ON A SAILBOAT

I have a 30 foot, 10'9" beam, 3'10' draft and I am looking at putting it on my boat lift. The lift was setup for power boats, with bunks that can be moved in an out made of aluminum and covered with vinyl or rubber. I have been looking at various modifications online, most feature a keel stand and stanchions just like a land cradle. Is there any issue with not supporting the keel and just letting it hang? Any ideas or suggestions?

Most of the weight of the boat is in the keel. It needs to be supported or it will deform the hull and possibly damage it. The boat can support the keel in the water because the weight of the keel is distributed over the entire submerged hull. The bunks or pads concentrate all the weight in a small area that is not strong enough to support the weight for any length of time. The only time it is OK to not support the keel is when it is in the travel lift and being launched. That is a very short time, and the travel lift straps support the hull at its thickest and strongest part. Pads and bunks only serve to keep the boat from falling over.

The weight of a cubic foot of water is 62.4 pounds. If you have a fin keel that is approximately 6" wide by 3 feet long by 4 feet deep, that displaces 374.4 lbs of water. Hauling your boat out and letting the keel hang, would be the same, in this case, as adding 374.4 pounds to the middle of your boat. -Will (Dragonfly)

RoyS

Will, you lost me with that statement.

The weighted keel hangs freely beneath the boat when in the water, except for the support of the water as displaced by the keel's volume. In the example case I used, that volume would mean the water only supports about 375 lbs of the keel's weight. The rest is dead hanging under the boat. I think I gave my example keel more volume than a typical 30' sailboat would have, to be generous with the numbers. Let's say the weighted keel weighed 2000 lbs. That means, the boat is holding up 1625 lbs of keel, just sitting in the water. I seriously doubt that hanging the extra 375 lbs would not have much effect. -Will (Dragonfly)

All of the sailboat on lifts that I have seen around here have a central beam on which the keel sits and props to "balance the boat" I have kept/ keep two sailboats on a lift both were/are wing keels not sure how it would be in the case of fin keel. I would be happy to post a picture of my Beneteau on the lift if you would like to see.

Thanks for all the responses so far, inherently I thought the keel needed to be supported but didn't know the reasoning behind it. Would love to see any pictures of your boats on lifts. I have seen a bunch on the net!

Here's a couple of pictures I just took with my phone. Yeah I know I need bottom paint, I'm waiting till August when sailing is unbearable around here

So, it strikes me that if your boat is up on a lift and dry. Then you will need to use a different kind of bottom paint then you would if the boat was in the water all the time? Yes?

Yes, there are basically two kinds, hard and ablative. For a boat that is going to dry out more than 72 hours you should use ablative.

Terry Cox

Our area has a hard storage marina for boats of all makes up to 36'. The marina uses a for and aft fork lift between the fin keel to move, launch and stow these boats without any issues as far as I know (no direct experience due to the larger size of our 42' boat.

No. Don't do it. The keel needs to be supported. It will damage the hull.

Crazy Dave Condon

Having designed a few sailboat lifts, the keel which carry’s the weight needs to sit on a keel tray with supports to keep the boat upright. I have seen air tank style lifts as well. You need an experienced builder who has done a few with sailboats

When afloat, your keel is dead weight and pulls against the flotation of the hull. The is zero support from the water to your keel. As long as the lift is rated for the weight of the boat and the hull is properly supported you should have no issues... But why couldn't you support the keel. A keel support that this to each bunk would bolster them against splaying.... You just need to establish a good reference system so that can repeatedly spot the boat in the desired location...

I'd start with the spec weight of the lift and make sure it can handle the boat. Most scissor type lifts in my area have a 4k limit which you can find fairly regularly now for sale due to the newer boats (wakeboard/surfing) are needing larger lifts. A mechanical lift the size to lift a 10k boat would be significant. Through the manufacturers guidance, I upgraded my lift from 4k to 6k via bracing and trussing some components but my lift is galvanized steel and easy to alter. I needed a couple extra 1000 pounds capacity but not the step up in size. Unless it is a swing keel I can't image finding a regular lift (not make specifically for a sailboat) that would accommodate the keel due to the lifts cross members structures but I know there are out there.

BENEFITS OF A SAILBOAT LIFT INSTALLATION

So, why invest in a sailboat lift installation for your watercraft? A boat lift is designed to suspend a boat above the water - for either a personal dock or a commercial dock. Utilizing a sailboat lift offers several advantages over keeping it tied at the dock within the water. Read more here for boat lift information .

Security is one of the main advantages of using a boat lift. You’ll never have to worry about losing your boat or having it being smashed against the dock by the water. Neither will you have to worry about the boat sinking at the dock. The opportunity for marine growth is limited when the sailboat is kept out of the water, so you may not have to apply bottom paint.

Not only are sailboat lifts good for the safety and security of your boat, but they also protect your boat from corrosion. A sailboat stored on a lift is less subject to dings and scratches, so a lift can even add long-term value to the boat.

In addition, keeping a boat at the water is also much handier than launching from a trailer before each outing.

4 Types Of Boat Lifts You Need To Know (Explained)

' src=

Not all boats are on trailers. Even when they are, it isn’t always convenient or even possible to get them on the trailer.  A big benefit of using a lift is that your boat will not get covered in slime and biological growth. For these reasons, many people turn to boat lifts.

There are many different boat lifts that can be used to get your boat out of the water.

Some of the most popular boat lifts are:

  • Freestanding lifts
  • Boathouse lifts
  • Pile mount lifts
  • Floating lifts

In the rest of this post, we’ll take a look at these lifts in more detail. How they work and what you should know about them

Table of Contents

1) Freestanding Lifts

sailboat boat lift

A freestanding boat lift is a lift that is mounted directly into the ground, usually under the water next to a dock.  This type of lift supplies its own base, so no other structures will need to be present to make them work.

These boat lifts can be placed in the water, or they can be built on the land.  One of the main advantages of this type of lift is that it can easily be erected in a wide range of areas.

How Freestanding Lifts Work?

A freestanding lift is essentially a vertical or cantilevered lift that cradles the boat and lifts it into the air.

It will often use a hydraulic lift system, but you can find crank systems and electrical systems as well.

To use a free-standing lift that is in the water, you need to drive the boat onto the lift system .  Once in place, the lift will take the boat up into the air and out of the water.  In this case, you could use a vertical lift when you have plenty of water to work with over the top of the lift.

Otherwise, you might want to go with a cantilevered lift so that you can get some additional space between the boat and the shore.

This will give you a deeper water depth.

Freestanding lifts that are on land work in a similar manner.  However, to get a boat onto this type of lift, a person would have to take the boat out of the water and lay it onto the lift.

Depending on the size of the boat, specialized equipment might be needed.

When to Use Freestanding Lifts?

A freestanding lift can be used by a homeowner of a waterfront property who wants a simple method for getting their boat out of the water.

This type of lift is one of the easiest types to install, and a DIYer should be able to assemble and install the lift system themselves.

On top of this, you can even add large wheels to a freestanding boat lift.  With wheels mounted on the boat lift, the boat owner can move the boat around their yard or even into their garage after it has been lifted.

Professional docks might want to use these systems to make use of the vertical space on their land and to keep their customer’s boats out of the water when not in use.  I’ve been to boat yards that put your boat in the water for you, and when you’re done boating for the day, they put it up on a lift.

This type of boatyard gives you many of the conveniences of having your boat at a dock, but it costs less money.

The only major downside was that we would have to call ahead and ask the dock to get the boat off of the lift and into the water before we could use it.

Also, we’d have to be aware of the dock’s hours as someone would need to put the boat back onto the lift at the end of the day.

How Much do Free Standing Lifts Cost?

The cost of a free-standing lift will vary based on the size and weight capacity of the free-standing lift.  A small 2,500-pound vertical freestanding lift might sell for around $3,000.00, while a larger 6,000-pound boat lift might easily sell for well over $10,000.00.

In addition to this cost, you might have to pay money to have the lift installed.  This will depend largely on your DIY skills, the placement of the lift, and the conditions that surround the lift.

Accessories like boat canopies and guideposts can also be added to free-standing lifts.  These accessories also cost money, and if you end up with a lot of accessories, you could easily end up doubling the cost of your freestanding lift.

2) Boathouse Lifts

sailboat boat lift

A boathouse lift is a type of overhead lift.

This type of lift is often built into the homeowner’s docks, and it is a great alternative for people who can’t put a freestanding lift into the water.

This being said, a boathouse lift doesn’t actually have to be built into a boathouse at a dock.  A vertical lift system like this could just as easily be built into a business’s warehouse or even a homeowner’s garage.

How Boat House Lifts Work?

A boathouse lift uses a pulley system to lift a boat into the air vertically.  The weight of the lift as well as the boat is supported by the overhead structure.

This structure could be a dock with an overhead metal or wooden canopy, or it could be a structurally sound building built on the land.

These lifts usually use a hydraulic system, but other movement systems are available.  Typically, people prefer hydraulic systems because of their increased speed of movement and power.

One nice feature of a boathouse lift is that your boat is stored undercover on the lift, further protecting it from the elements.  You can even have solar panels mounted on top of the boathouse.

When to Use Them

Homeowners who already have a boathouse are a natural fit for this type of boat lift.  People who do not have solid enough ground near their boat dock will also greatly benefit from this type of boat lift.

People looking for a lift that they can put in their garage without occupying any additional floor space might also want to look into having a boathouse lift installed into their home.

Businesses might want to use this type of boat lift to help keep the boat stable while their customer moves on and off of their chartered or rented boats.  The boathouse lift gives customers a shaded and stabilized entry point that can be accessed by people with accessibility issues.

How Much Does a Boathouse Lift Cost?

Boathouse lifts are usually less expensive than free-standing lifts.  This makes sense as the lift boathouse is providing much of the structure of the lift, so you need fewer parts to build and operate a boathouse lift.

A typical boathouse lift kit for a lightweight boat can cost less than $1,000.00.  Even a heavier boat weighing upwards of 12,000 pounds might only cost the boat owner around $6,000.00.

Of course, these prices do not include the construction of a boathouse or the installation of the boathouse lift system.  If you have to build a boathouse to accommodate your lift system, you could very well end up spending much more money on this lift than you would for a freestanding lift system.

3) Pile Mount Lifts

sailboat boat lift

A pile mount lift is a boat lift that is mounted to the piling of a dock.

If you’re unfamiliar with what a pile is, it’s just that large wooden post that goes into the ground around stationary docks.  These posts are generally driven very deep into the ground under the water and could be installed with concrete, so they are sturdy and stable enough to take on tidal forces.

As a result, they make a good base for a boat lift.

This type of boat lift is often recommended as an alternative to people who need a structural boat lift but do not have a boathouse to mount it onto.

These lifts can be mounted to as few as one post, and they can often support a lot of weight:

sailboat boat lift

With a pile mount lift, more pile posts allow you to lift more weight.

Four post pile mounts can often support tens of thousands of pounds, while one post pile mounts should not be used to support boats of any significant weight.

How Do Pile Mount Lifts Work?

A pile mount lift will consist of two large beams that run parallel to each other on a separate set of piles.  These beams will have a set of pulleys on them that connect to the cradle that will ultimately hold the boat.

The boat owner will drive their boat over the cradle, and the pulleys will then lift the boat up out of the water.  Like the other lifts, pile mounts will often use a hydraulic design to lift the boat out of the water quickly.

When to Use a Pile Mount Lift?

A pile mount lift should be used whenever a person or business needs a secure structural lift that can support large amounts of weight.  They should also consider using a pile mount lift for conditions that require the boat to be lifted high out of the water.

An example situation might be a boat dock that is subject to extremely high tides.  In this case, you’d want to lift the boat high out of the water so that the boat would not float off in the event of a deep high tide.

How Much do Pile Mount Lifts Cost?

Pile mount boat lifts are an economical type of boat lift, especially when dealing with heavy boats.  In fact, you can buy a four-post pile mount lift capable of lifting 10,000 pounds for less than $5,000.00.

Lifts prices can go over $10,000.00, but with a lift this expensive, you’ll be able to lift boats that weigh in excess of 20,000 pounds.

4) Floating Lifts

sailboat boat lift

A floating boat lift is essentially a dock that you can drive your boat up onto.  This type of lift keeps your boat out of the water without the need for a pulley system.

Additionally, these boat lift systems generally require much less maintenance as they may not have as many moving parts.  The floats do get covered in marine growth, however.

On top of this, you never have to worry whether or not a floating lift will be high enough.  This lift will float higher as the tides come in, and it’ll float lower as the tides move out.

How do Floating Boat Lift Systems Work

A floating boat lift system will often use an airlift system to raise the height of the lift.  However, this isn’t always the case.

For lighter boats, the lift system may be as simple as a plastic dock with high buoyancy.  In this case, the dock is pushed down in sections while the boat is driven up onto it.  The dock then springs up and out of the water.  This dock then floats just above the water, keeping your boat out of the water until you push it back off the dock.

When to Use a Floating Boat Lift

Floating boat lifts are useful for homeowners who do not have a boathouse or space for a freestanding or pile mounted lift.  They’re also good for homeowners who want a boat lift that does not require a lot of maintenance.

Boat rental companies may also want to make use of floating boat lifts.  The reason for this is that they are quicker and easier to operate than more traditional boat lifts.  This is especially true if the company is renting out smaller boats and jet skis .

How Much do Floating Boat Lifts Cost

Floating boat lifts can be had for less than $2,000.00 and can cost well over $10,000.00.  The price will mostly depend on what type of floating boat lift is installed and how large the boat lift is.

Lifts with airlift systems will generally cost more than lifts without.  These types of lifts will also cost more money to maintain as there is an actual mechanical element to the lift.

Special Considerations When Buying a Boat Lift For a Sailboat

Some people are under the false assumption that sailboats cannot be put up onto lifts, but this isn’t true.

A sailboat can be put on a boat lift, but considerations for the mast must be taken beforehand.

For instance, you can’t lift or even drive a sailboat into a boathouse without taking the mast off.  In most cases, this makes using a sailboat in a boathouse impractical.

Even accessories like boat lift canopies should probably be left off as you won’t be able to use them while the boat is in place.

Tiny sailboats might be better off with floating boat lifts, while larger sailboats might need to take advantage of freestanding or pile mounted boat lifts.  In any case, you’ll want to choose a boat lift that makes using the boat easier rather than more difficult.

Why Get a Boat Lift At All?

Some people choose to forego getting a boat lift at all.  These people will either trailer their boat, or they’ll leave their boat tied up at their dock.

It is easy to see why someone would lift their boat rather than trailer it.  Trailering a boat is time-consuming, it’s inconvenient, and it usually requires the use of a boat ramp.

When it comes to lifting a boat instead of just docking the boat, it can be harder to see what the benefits might be.

However, there are a few thoughts you might want to keep in mind when choosing between docking and lifting your boat.

For starters, lifting your boat will help keep it from moving back and forth at the dock.  This reduces the chances that your boat will be scratched and dented while it is docked.

On top of this, having a boat out of the water helps protect it from any debris that might be floating by.  Many boats have been damaged from boards and other large materials floating into them while docked.  This is especially true just after a bad storm or hurricane.

Also, a securely lifted boat is easier to get in and out of.  The lift will keep the boat out of the water, and you’ll have a stable base to walk around on until you get seated.

Lastly, keeping the boat out of the water helps it last longer and reduces maintenance.  This is especially true if your boat is sitting in saltwater.

People who dock their boats in water have to treat the bottom of their boats, so that marine growth does not occur on their hull.

This treatment can be time-consuming and costly since it needs to be done every year or two at the most.

Final Thoughts

There are many different lifts that can be used to get your boat in and out of the water.  Each of these lifts has specific advantages and disadvantages associated with them.

The type of boat lift you choose will depend on your dock, the size of your boat, and your budget.

Boat lift: Okay For A Sailboat?

  • Add to quote

PBzeer

As long as the lift is rated for the load, and is securely erected, you shouldn't have a problem. I would though, during storm conditions, lower the boat to the water to take strain off of the lift.

sailingdog

Aside from what PBZ said, I'd point out that lifts are fairly particular about how the boats are loaded onto them...and if you don't "park" the boat right, you can damage it or the lift if you try to lift it.

St Anna

What a great solution. Well sourced. I would recomend what SailingDog said.

lydanynom

A bigger boat may not have this problem, but with my boat I have to be very careful to make sure I'm supporting and matching the curve of the hull properly or it will dimple due to the pressure of the bunks. I have a swing keel as well, which adds to the problem since the hull bears all of the weight.

LandLocked66c

It would have to be a big lift for a 27 footer! I've seen tons of them on inland lakes with power boats. I would imagine it would certainly pay for itself depending on your location!

"Rather than pay to get 2 pilings put in in order to 'T' our boat to his pier firmly on all four sides of the boat , it seems to make sense to purchase a boat lift instead that we could simply drive the boat onto. They make them where only 2, or even 1, piling is all that's needed...." Four feet is really thin on a cat-27, the shoal draft wing keel is 3 and a half feet. 6" of wetness below that really isn'r much. Not to be a contrary old cuss, but why is this needed? Can't you tie off with a couple of lines and some fenders? Or those fiberglass spring poles that attach to the far side of the boat from the dock... Not to mention that a cat-27 dry is about 6800 lbs, thats one big lift. The price of the lift and pilings is going to be more than the boat.

cesarid

Boat lifts can get expensive. I checked one out for my 410 - $30,000. I think not. You need one custom designed for your boat.

Charrob said: (2) When not used, keeps boat out of water which stops corrosion of various engine parts that normally sit in water, as well as stops a ton of barnacles from hooking themselves onto the bottom of the boat-- alleviating maintenance issues. -Charrob Click to expand...

no, rust doesn't. How much rusting of a brass prop, a stainless prop shaft and brass/bronze shaft support is there going to be? What engine parts are going to be more protected?

Vertical Boat Lifts

FLOE’s vertical boat lifts and pontoon boat lifts accommodate watercraft ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 lbs. The bolt-together design uses lock-nuts to keep the frame components tight and eliminates structural welds that can wear out and fatigue over time. The sturdy V-brace frame design is the most rigid available while still allowing easy access to the boat. The main cradle beam lowers to 9.5 inches from the ground, allowing for smooth operations in less water than other vertical boat lifts.

Vertical Screw Boat Lifts

Vertical screw drive boat lift technology - a definite leap forward.

FLOE’s VSD technology lowers and raises your boat or pontoon in about one-half the time of most other powered boat lifts. It’s the most energy-efficient vertical boat lift in the world. The drive train is whisper quiet with no clicking winch gears or pinging cable.

The low-maintenance electric motor spins the screw so the ball nut travels back and forth as it pulls the lifting cable. The industrial strength ball-screw is rated for 20,000 cycles at 10,000 lbs. No need to ever replace a worn winch cable with a VSD boat lift!

Quickly raise and lower your boat with the push of a button using FLOE’s Wired Remote. The 30-foot cord makes it convenient to position anywhere on the boat lift and has a key switch so you can turn off your lift when you are not at the lake.

Add an optional Wireless Remote to operate your boat lift from a distance with no cord. Other options include a Flood Light system that plugs into the wireless system and a Solar Charging Panel so you’ll never have dead batteries.

Vertical Screw Lift Models

FLOE’s state-of-the-art, industrial-strength Vertical Screw Drive [VSD] boat lifts and pontoon lifts are the perfect choice for those who want the best of the best. The VSD boat lift is designed to be easy to use, quiet and fast, raising your boat in about half the time of other lifts.

VSD aluminum boat lifts are available in  a 24-volt DC version. Models include:

Boat Lift FAQs

What is a floating boat lift.

A floating boat lift is designed to raise and support boats out of the water when they’re not in use. It uses  pneumatic  flotation tanks to keep the vessel above the waterline,  protecting the bow of the boat  and the hull from damage and corrosion. The flotation system allows for lifting boats amid changing water levels which makes it perfect for use with floating docks and on bodies of water where the level fluctuates.

How does a floating boat lift work?

Floating boat lifts work  by using air (or pneumatic) chambers to provide buoyancy, allowing the boat to stay afloat. Some of these chambers are in the shape of large pontoon tanks while others use roto-molded poly tanks. They typically feature a cradle or platform on which the boat sits. The lift uses an electric pump to control air pressure in the flotation tanks to raise and lower the boat. The electric pump can also be conveniently controlled by a handy remote.

What are the advantages of using a floating boat lift?

Floating boat lifts offer several benefits, including preventing hull fouling, reducing maintenance, extending the boat’s lifespan, and providing easy access for cleaning, inspections, and repairs. Other benefits include ease of installation, the longer life and  protection against rust and corrosion  provided by keeping the steel above the waterline, and the ability to use where water levels change with weather events or seasonal drawdowns. Likewise, the advantages of a  floating PWC lift  include the addition of an excellent platform for quickly getting on and off the jet ski.

How much does a boat lift cost to purchase and install?

sailboat boat lift

Prices can range from a few hundred dollars for smaller lifts to several thousand dollars for larger, more advanced models. Installation costs may also vary, depending on the complexity of the setup.

On average, a lift designed for a 4,000 to 5,000 lb load may be priced somewhere near $5,500 to $6,000. A larger scale product, such as a higher capacity 30,000 lb lift, will necessarily cost more, and you can expect to pay up to $30,000 or more.

A generalized scale that could help get you in the ballpark would be to figure (roughly) $1 per pound. It would be best to remember that models, features, custom work, specials, the current market, etc., can cause your price to fluctuate a good deal in either direction.

As a supplement, read this article if you want  tips on purchasing a used boatlift .

Are remote controls available?

Yes! At LOTO Lift, we proudly utilize  Firstmate boat lift controls for all our boat lifts here at Lake of the Ozarks. To assist you in mastering these advanced systems, we’ve prepared an informative video that offers essential insights and instructions for boat lift controls. This comprehensive instructional video provides step-by-step guidance on operating your Firstmate control system, ensuring you can make the most of this technology.  Watch the video here .

How long do floating boat lifts typically last?

All boat lifts will require some maintenance over time. So if you will service and maintain an average lift as recommended, barring any unusual circumstances you can reasonably expect your boat lift to have a good 25-year lifespan. However, on our LOTO Lift models, because we build them to keep all the steel up out of the water you can reasonably expect a life span of 35 – 40 years. Furthermore, the basic product frame and tanks can still last much longer than that! (Read more here.)

Are floating boat lifts suitable for all types of boats?

Floating boat lifts can be suitable for a wide range of boat sizes and types, but choosing the appropriate lift capacity and design for your specific boat is essential.

What are the key differences between a Pontoon/Tritoon boat lift and a V-Hull boat lift?

LOTO Lift recommends our LT Model lift for a V-Hull, which has the bunks slightly angled so the hull fits into the bunks. Our pontoon and tritoon lifts are outfitted with flatter bunks, so the pontoons rest on top of the bunks.

Can I increase the capacity of my boat lift?

Certainly, here’s a revised response to the FAQ, “Can I increase the capacity of my boat lift?”

Absolutely! Our LT model system is designed to be versatile, allowing you to upgrade the lift to accommodate larger weight capacities. So if you decide to invest in a bigger vessel, no worries! Just get in touch with us, and we’ll facilitate the upgrade for your boat lifter to handle your new watercraft seamlessly. This not only provides a cost-effective solution but also enhances the overall value of your investment. Additionally, having one of our industry-leading boat hoists on your floating dock can boost the value of your property.

How much weight can a floating boat lift support?

One definite advantage of a LOTO Lift is that you can  find boat lifts for small boats  to very large ones, even  pontoons or tritoons !  The weight capacity of a floating boat lift varies by design and model. Lake lifts are available to support boats ranging from a few hundred pounds to several tons. LOTO Lift’s LT Model can support up to 30,000 lbs. Consult with a professional boat lift manufacturer or dealer to choose a lift that matches your boat’s weight.

How do I choose the right size of a floating boat lift for my boat?

To determine the right size, consider your boat’s weight and dimensions. Another important element in considering the right size floating boatlift is leverage. You must account for leverage and ensure that you have adequate displacement spread over the appropriate distance proportionate to the length of the boat and the sweet spot where the weight is centered. To learn more, we recommend the following article:

How to Buy a Boat Lift: A Comprehensive Guide for Boaters

The goal is to find the right lift capacity for the actual dry weight of your boat. Many boat dealers diminish the dry weight of a boat to make more sales by advertising lighter hauling claims. The problem is that these claims factor out anything else that adds weight to your boat. So, we apply a rule that the listed dry weight of your boat should be 75% of the lift’s capacity or less. With this formula, we have never once had a problem with a boatlift not correctly managing the weight of a boat. So, please be careful not to buy a boat lift whose capacity matches or is near the dry weight of your boat.

As always, consult a  boat lift dealer or manufacturer  for guidance to ensure you select the correct lift capacity and design.

What maintenance is required for a floating boat lift?

sailboat boat lift

  • If you use a floating boat lift, primarily used here in the Midwest, the good news is that it requires less maintenance than other types of lifts. The most important thing to do regularly is to k eep the surfaces clean and debris-free.
  • Your boat lift is engineered to a particular set of specifications. So absolutely do not put more weight on your lift than it’s engineered to support. You should never even test its limits. (See our previous FAQ answer above.)
  • Inspect all your hardware and bolt mounts. If there is any movement at all in a bolt, this signals that there is a problem that needs to be addressed.
  • Maintenance typically includes cleaning, inspecting for damage, and lubricating moving parts. Consult your lift’s user manual for specific maintenance instructions.
  • You can  request service here for repairs  to your boat lift.

What are the installation requirements for a floating boat lift?

Installation requirements vary by boat hoist type and manufacturer. Generally, you’ll need a dock with an appropriately sized slip,  adequate water depth , and access to electricity to power the pneumatic pump. You may install your pneumatic lift yourself, but we generally encourage new customers to allow LOTO Lift to install your new boat lift. For more info on  installing a boat lift, read here .

Is water depth a concern when installing a boat lift?

You’ll typically need about 3 ½ to 4 feet of water for our smaller lifts. You’ll only need 24” of water for our shallow water lifts.  However, deeper water may be required if you have a larger boat. Contact us for personalized guidance based on your specific situation.

What materials are used in the construction of LOTO Lifts?

Our boat lifts feature tanks made from polyethylene plastic, produced through rotational molding. The metal components are crafted from American-made steel. Additionally, you can choose between marine-grade treated lumber or a reinforced thermoplastic composite with HDPE for the bunks. It’s worth noting that our flotation tanks, frames, and HDPE bunks all come with a lifetime warranty, ensuring a lasting and reliable solution for your boat lift needs.

Are there any environmental considerations with floating boat lifts?

Floating boat lifts are generally considered environmentally friendly since they help prevent hull fouling and minimize the need for antifouling paints. However, it’s essential to ensure proper maintenance and disposal of lift components to avoid environmental impact.

Does a boat lift need to be level?

The short answer is yes. Your boat needs to be as level as possible in order to drain out whenever you raise it from the water.

Can I leave a boat lift in water during winter?

When you research this online, there are differences of opinion on this one. At Lake of the Ozarks, most owners leave their lifts in with their boats on them.  A dock de-icer is the key here. You can protect the investment you’ve made in your boat and your dock for just a few dollars. Ice damages both docks and lifts.

Ice can literally change the dimensions or shape of your boat slip. As the ice freezes and expands, it can enlarge the slip. Your boat lift is calibrated to your dock’s slip size. So, if your slip changes, your lift will no longer fit properly, which will cause problems.

Here’s the rule of thumb: when your dock needs a de-icer, your  boat lift needs a de-icer . It’s a minimal amount to spend to spare you a headache and save you money.

Are there any safety features or precautions I should know when using a floating boat lift?

Yes, safety is paramount when using a floating boat lift. Ensure that you follow all the manufacturer’s safety guidelines, including proper boat positioning, securing the boat during lift operation, and using personal safety equipment when necessary. It’s also important to regularly inspect the lift for any signs of wear or damage.

Can I move a floating boat lift to a different location?

Yes! However, some floating boat lifts are designed to be moved easily, while others are somewhat more stationary. To move a LOTO Lift, you will need to make sure that it will be relocated to the same size of dock slip. If you plan to move your lift, choose a portable or design that allows for relocation. Consult with the manufacturer of your lake lift for specific instructions on moving your unit.

Do floating boat lifts come with warranties?

Many manufacturers offer warranties for their floating boat lifts. Warranty terms and coverage can vary, so it’s essential to review the warranty information the manufacturer provides before making a purchase. As a side note, this is one reason we advocate for new boats versus used boat lifts when possible. It’s always good to have a warranty!

Are any regulations or permits required for using a floating boat lift in my area?

Regulations and permit requirements can vary by location. Check with local authorities, marinas, or permitting agencies to determine if any permits or regulations apply to using a floating boat lift in your area.

Do floating boat lifts require electricity to operate?

Yes. Floating boat lifts require electricity to power the pneumatic pumps to fill the tanks with air in order for boat lifting to occur.

What is the difference between a floating boat lift and a traditional boat lift?

The primary difference is that floating boat lifts use buoyancy to keep the boat afloat, while traditional boat lifts are fixed to a specific point of stability. Choosing the  best type of boat hoist  is vitally important.

For example, a suspended boat lift (or,  hanging cradle lift ) is moored to a fixed dock or pilings, and the boat is suspended from above using a frame and pulley or hydraulic system.

Similarly, the  bottom-standing boat lift  is built to stand on the bottom of the lake, river, or ocean floor. Examples of this lift are hydraulic boat lifts, vertical boat lifts, and cantilever boat lifts.

Floating boat lifts are often more adaptable to various water conditions and are suitable for boats with different hull designs. The most popular lifts in the Midwest are floating boat lifts.

Can a shallow water boat lift be used in both shallow and deeper water?

Yes. Shallow water lifts can be used in shallow or normal-depth waters. Some boats with tall wakeboard towers in marinas may require a low-profile lift to raise their boats without hitting the marina or dock cover.

Is it safe to have the boat lift rest on the ground while the boat is on it?

In most cases, if the lift needs to sit on the ground due to a lack of water, your boat should be fine for the short term. However, if the ground is highly uneven or rocky, removing the boat is advisable before this situation happens.

What's the process for getting the boat on and off the floating boat lift?

To dock your boat on a pneumatic lift, position it about a foot away from the front of the slip and line it up as closely to the center as possible. Activate the air pump by pushing a button on your remote or flipping the switch in the dock control unit. To return the boat to the water, use the remote or the control unit to vent the tanks, allowing it to descend automatically.

How should I go about docking a Personal Watercraft (PWC)?

When  docking your PWC  on LOTO Lift’s platform-style Jet Ski lift, slowly approach the platform while idling the craft. As the watercraft contacts the Jet Ski stand, accelerate enough to push the PWC onto the platform stand gently.

What is the air pressure inside the boat lift tanks when fully raised?

  • Each of our polytanks contains 1-3 psi of air when the lift is fully elevated.

How long is the process to lift a boat out of the water and lower it back in?

  • Typically, the process for lowering or lifting a boat takes approximately three to five minutes. However, for PWC and our smaller 4,500lb lifts, the time is less: approximately 2-4 minutes.

**Please note that these answers provide a general overview. It’s best to consult with a reputable boat lift dealer or manufacturer for specific details and product recommendations.**
