Outboard power gives the C107 a higher top end and a wider range of efficient speeds and a higher top end for cruisers to make the most of their time on the water.

The C107 is unlike any other boat ever designed, with asymmetrical hulls and asymmetrical power.

Perhaps counterintuitively, this is the quietest Aspen ever, and she scoots across the bay smoothly, under power from either one or both of her outboards rated for 200- and 70-horsepower engines. The outboards provide a balance for our Power Proa hull, though we changed the starboard hull so it no longer has the keel form and prop pocket. The engines are rated for the same maximum rpm range of 5,000 to 6,000, have the same lower-unit gear ratio, and use similarly pitched props. The hull shape at the bow still lets the boat run in balance: No helm correction is needed, and hands-free tracking is on par with our inboard design.

The C107 has a comfortable salon area with galley to port and a dinette to starboard. The galley is equipped with a propane stove and oven, and a refrigerator. The dinette seats four and converts to a double berth. Belowdecks, accommodations include a master forward with a king-size berth, and a separate enclosed head with shower, and there’s a quarter-berth beneath the galley. She’s nicely appointed with Burmese teak, a custom-selected tile backsplash, and more. The C107 is a true cruising yacht that makes the most of today’s outboards for quiet, efficient operation.

2022 Aspen C120

Aspen Power Catamarans employ asymmetrical hulls similar to Polynesian proas. These provide stability, seaworthiness, extraordinary efficiency and generous interior space for cruising accommodations. The C120, Aspen’s largest model, features a single Volvo Penta D6 diesel driving a conventional inboard prop shaft at a low, efficient angle. A shallow keel protects the propeller and rudder. Bow and stern thrusters aid maneuverability.

Both hulls of an Aspen are narrow enough for their length to beat the speed limitations of displacement hulls. Our test boat hit a top speed of 22.9 mph. High cruise is an impressive 17.2 mph, while low cruise is 9.1 mph at 4.4 gph, good for passage-making at trawler speed, with enough extra on tap to run ahead of a storm.

The genius lies in the fact that the port hull is 35 percent narrower than the starboard, and its actual drag is approximately 50 percent less because it has no keel, shaft, rudder or propeller. The single-engine design also saves machinery weight, which in turn eliminates the need for additional structural components and fuel. These savings reduce the boat’s weight approximately 40 percent, with corresponding efficiency gains.

Interior and Accessories

The configuration also offers comfortable living space, with a bright, airy pilothouse/salon with a full galley and dinette. The helm includes multiscreen Garmin electronics and seating for two. An optional Aspen Adventure Electronics Package ($43,658) hints at the C120’s designed long-range cruising mission.

Forward, a queen-size berth offers standing headroom on each side. Amidships, there’s a full head with a shower in each hull. Aft, there’s a queen berth in the starboard hull and a single in the port hull. The shaded cockpit offers seating and a teak table. Hatches provide access to the engine and 6 kW Kohler genset. A broad transom platform mounts an ingenious dual-winch system for carrying an 11-foot RIB with a 20 hp outboard. The flybridge offers a second helm, seating for eight, a drawer refrigerator, and a polished teak table with a compass rose inlay.

Toughest Competitor

There’s no other proa cats that we know of, but check out the Fountain Pajot MY4.S ($827,867 with twin 250 hp engines). Its two hulls are similar, with twin diesel inboard engines of 150 or 250 hp. It offers redundant safety and is faster at wide-open throttle, at about 25 mph. But it can’t match the Aspen’s range and efficiency.

This hybrid design starts with a deep single-entry forefoot that smoothly cleaves through waves for improved tracking and spray resistance. The hull contour then gently widens aft and at the stern resembles a modified catamaran hull which provides lateral stability and lift. Carbon Cat’s unique patent in process hull form provides the stability of a catamaran or an inflatable RIB but utilizes lightweight carbon fiber construction making them fast, efficient and easy to handle.

The gunwale is finished with a thick foam bumper made with SeaDek HD for durability and to eliminate scratches and abrasions. The seating area is also cushioned with SeaDek creating a softer surface and better grip.

The amazing Carbon Cat construction and design means that the power requirements should be 35% less than typical inflatables due to the hard bottom and hybrid cat hull shape. During sea trials the T11 reached a top speed of 21mph powered by a single 9.9hp Yamaha outboard. This is an incredible speed to HP ratio superior to other tenders.

Using more moderate horsepower increases fuel efficiency and reduces weight. This makes Carbon Cats and their engines easier to stow onboard and easier to launch and retrieve. Optional transom wheels make beaching the Carbon Cat even simpler.
