Orcas have sunk a yacht off the coast of Gibraltar - the latest in a string of similar attacks by the mammals over the past four years.

The Alboran Cognac sailing vessel was rammed by an unknown number of killer whales in the Strait of Gibraltar at around 9am local time on Sunday, the Spanish maritime rescue service said.

Two people were on board, who reported feeling blows to the boat's hull and rudder before it started taking on water.

They had to be rescued by a nearby oil tanker after they radioed the coastguard for help. The pair were taken to Gibraltar for safety, while the yacht was left adrift and later sank.

There have been around 700 interactions between orcas and ships since the trend emerged in the area in May 2020, according to the research group GTOA.

They believe such attacks could be the result of the orcas' playful curiosity or the animals confusing boats with competitors for bluefin tuna - their favourite prey.

Experts claim these incidents, which have been confined to the strait that separates Spain and Portugal from Africa, are the work of a sub-population of around 15 orcas.

In May last year, a yacht called The Mustique was severely damaged by several of the whales and had to be towed to Cadiz.

Guidelines issued by the Spanish Transport Ministry stipulate that whenever ships observe any alteration in the behaviour of orcas - such as sudden changes of direction or speed - they should leave the area as soon as possible and avoid further disturbance to the animals during the manoeuvres.

Yacht sinks after latest incident involving orcas in strait of Gibraltar

Vessel measuring 15 metres in length sank after encounter with the animals, Spain’s maritime rescue service reports

An unknown number of orcas have sunk a yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service has said, in the latest in a series of similar incidents involving the animals.

The vessel, Alboran Cognac, which measured 15 metres (49ft) in length and carried two people, encountered the highly social apex predators, also known as killer whales, at 9am local time on Sunday.

The passengers reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before the boat started taking on water. After alerting the rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and transported them to Gibraltar. The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank.

The incident is the latest example of recurring orca rammings around the Gibraltar strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and north-western Spain. Experts believe them to involve a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the designation “Gladis”.

According to the research group GT Atlantic Orca, which tracks populations of the Iberian orca sub-species, there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the region were first reported in May 2020.

Researchers are unsure about the causes for the behaviour, but theories include that it is a playful manifestation of the mammals’ curiosity, a social fad or the intentional targeting of what they perceive as competitors for their favourite prey, the local bluefin tuna.

Although known as killer whales, endangered orcas are part of the dolphin family. They can measure up to 8 metres in length and weigh up to 6 tonnes as adults.

My boat sat up for too long and caught a bad tank of gas. I was worried that I would have to take the boat off the slip and trailer it somewhere but Russell was able to go by my house, pick up the tank, clean it and let me pick it up on the way into town on a Friday. Was a huge time saver and was basically seamless. Really helpful and responsive. Brian C.

If you are looking for a no BS marine mechanic, Russell and his crew are your guys. They have always been great communicators and very timely. I have used them a few times now for trailer work as well as engine work. They have left nothing to be desired, and I can't recommend them enough.

My 97 Searay, purchased in May, never had chance to run and enjoy because it spent the entire summer at R and S. Poor diagnostic skills, paying for repairs( over $3000 ) that never got boat in acceptable running condition, and personal abuse by the owner are the hallmarks of R and S. I hate to dis a fellow business owner on the Island but Russell never failed in his attempts to characterize me as nothing but a pain in the arse even though he was happy to accept my money, charge me time and a half when asked to expedite repairs, and never properly diagnose the problems from day one. God forbid I would show up after the boat was there for weeks without any update, and be mistreated for asking for a progress report. Not the way to conduct business. Thanks for souring me on the whole boating experience.

I've done business with R&S Marine for over 3 years. Various services/repairs. I've found Russell (one of the owners) group to be very knowledgeable (we all get things wrong sometimes) and for the provided services request a fair priceI. If you don't make advance arrangements, it could take a few weeks before you see your boat again (this applies to most marine services). I've recommended another boat owner and as of this review, I've received no negative feedback from the owner.

I would like to preface this review by saying that I have worked with R & S on 2 separate occasions. My first experience was with their mechanic, performing a service on both engines and troubleshooting an electrical issue. The mechanic was wonderful, he went above and beyond to complete the job in a very professional manner. My second experience was a polar opposite, this work involved working with the 2 owners. My advice to anyone working with this company would be to communicate all details of the job, both before and during the process via email, text, etc. only ; you want a record of your conversations with R & S. Also, I would certainly recommend before and after photos of both the boat and trailer, if applicable. Also, if you store your trailer next door at Galveston Yacht Basin ( Nothing negative concerning the GYB or their staff, they are wonderful) , make sure it is behind the gate on the trailer lot, if that is not possible, place a sign in a visible location that contains your name and states for no one to use your trailer. When preparing to move my boat temporarily to Dallas, we could not find the trailer. With the help of the GYB staff, we spent several hours searching, we finally found the trailer in the R & S lot with someone else's boat on it, I have no idea how long they had been using it. When launching their boat from my trailer it started to sink, I feel for the owner of that boat. Minor damage was present on the trailer which was not noticed until I launched the boat in Dallas, the owner of R & S said I should have said something prior to leaving his shop, difficult to ascertain trailer damage with a boat on it. His camera must be able to see beyond the capability of the human eye as he said the camera revealed no damage. Again, my recommendation would be, should you choose to work with this business, to only communicate with the owners via email or text, don't pay them until the job is complete and to take plenty of pictures.

Russell and his technician Rick are two of the best in the business - any recommended service or repairs are reasonable in their prices and they make sure that you feel confident on the water and know your boat as well as they do. I asked specifically if I could accompany the technicial in doing a 300 hour service and diagnostics on some issues I was having. They made sure I knew end to end everything that needed to be done, made recommendations about what was and wasn't necessary (which saved a bunch of time and money), and even took my boat for a test drive to make sure everything was working properly and that all of the issues were fixed. These guys are so experienced they can diagnose issues just by a sound or description and often times have talked me out of costly unnecessary repairs and honed in on the real issues. They are two of the nicest most knowledgeable technicians I've ever met and are boat owners themselves and have your best interest and good honest business at heart. I won't be taking my boat anywhere else and neither will any of our friends and family. 2013 Robalo R200.

After a harrowers experience getting towed back from the jetties Monday after my boat died out there (Praise God for the folks that towed us in from Tiki in the middle of a Front passing!), I was scared I wouldn't be able to find anyone to work on my 115 Yamaha, and after a couple of tries to get thru, talked to Russell and explained I was only at the GYB for a week for our annual vacation. He explained they were very busy but would try and get someone for me on Tuesday AM. Sure enough he pulled a guy off a job long enough to come check mine out and he (Josh, great mechanic, I know cause I worked as one most of my career, albeit on much larger equipment!) immediately diagnosed a failed starter, and he and Russell found me a new one and had me going again later that evening! And at a very reasonable price, especially knowing I was in a bind. I'll definitely give these guys a shout again if I ever have any problems while in Galveston. I hate to see folks had not so good experiences with them, but thankfully I did not and they were great!! Thanks guys!!

Photo of Cindy D.

By far the best boat repair service ever! We broke steering in boat over spring break. They were kind enough to stay after hours to get us back going. Saved our vacation! Thank you guys for going above and beyond!!

We have used R&S for in-slip and shop service on our 11 year-old bay boat and shop repairs on two jet skis. Russell and his staff are very accommodating...great to work with. Boat and skis are running great. We hope not to be back for a while, but won't hesitate to call upon R&S for future service and repairs.

Orcas Sink 49-Foot Yacht in Mystifying Trend Around the Strait of Gibraltar

An unknown number of orcas sunk a sailing yacht in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar on Sunday, according to Spain’s maritime rescue service. While orcas are typically peaceful, this is the latest in a string of attacks that have hit the region in the past four years.

Reuters reports that a 49-foot-long vessel, named the Alboran Cognac, carried two people and encountered the high social apex predators at 9 am local time on Sunday. The passengers reported sudden blows to the hull and rudder before the water started seeping into the ship. A nearby oil tanker rescued the two onboard and transported them to Gibraltar. The yacht was left to sink into the ocean.

Experts believe the orcas involved to be a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the name “Gladis.” This group of juvenile males has sunk several yachts in the Strait of Gibraltar over the last four years, but experts are somewhat baffled as to why. While typically peaceful animals, the Gladis pod has plagued the small strip of water separating Europe and Africa for years.

There have been nearly 700 interactions between orcas and ships in the Strait of Gibraltar region since May 2020, according to Reuters. At the time, it seemed like one of many dystopian things going on in the world during the global pandemic. But the trend continues today, and we still don’t have much more of an explanation as to why this happens.

In 2020, photos of the Gladis pod revealed several injuries on the orcas’ bodies, possibly indicating previous run-ins with fishing boats. In a 2023 interview with NPR, director of the Orca Behavior Institute Monika Wieland Shields said we don’t know the motivation, but this could be a defense behavior based on previous trauma. It’s possible the orcas had negative experiences with a fishing boat, so now they see all large boats as a threat.

“I definitely think orcas are capable of complex emotions like revenge,” she told NPR. “I don’t think we can completely rule it out.”

However, Shields doesn’t completely subscribe to the “revenge” hypothesis. There have been plenty of other times when orcas around the world were targeted by boats, and they’ve never responded in this way before. Further, it doesn’t seem that this behavior is spreading to other orca pods.

Another theory is that ramming boats is just the latest orca fad, according to Renaud de Stephanis, president and coordinator at CIRCE Conservación Information and Research, a cetacean research group based in Spain. He told NPR in 2022 that “this is a game” for the orcas, and when they “ have their own adult life, it will probably stop. ” As orcas grow older, they have to help the pod hunt for food and have less time to play with sailboats.

Director of Bay Cetology, Jared Towers, told NPR that fads like this come and go in the orca society. Towers said some orcas in the Pacific in the 1990s would kill fish and swim around with it on their head. Now we don’t see that anymore. Hopefully, the boat ramming phenomenon will come and go like any other trend.

The cruise ship, designed to accommodate almost 5,000 passengers at double occupancy, can reach full capacity at 6,327 guests, but this typically happens only during vacation periods when many more children are on board.

'Galleria Euribia' is the venue for many of MSC Euribia's restaurants, shops, bars and parties.

Euribia can feel crowded at popular times, such as pre- and post-dinner on sea days. That’s especially true when adverse weather drives everyone indoors—common in Northern Europe throughout the year.

However, it’s worth taking the time to fully explore the ship on embarkation day , as there are quieter spots to be found. The Carousel Lounge is open throughout the day, and there is a lot of seating around the atrium.

Entertainment For All On Euribia

MSC Cruises is known as a lively cruise line , and Euribia certainly lives up to that reputation, with multilingual, family-friendly activities throughout the day and late-night parties for adults.

The three-level atrium on MSC Euribia features the signature Swarovski staircases.

The ship’s central feature is the three-deck central atrium and ‘Galleria Euribia’, a visually stunning two-deck interior promenade with a curved LED roof, home to specialty dining, shops, bars, and lounges. It’s a venue for both organized and spontaneous parties, including the captain’s welcome. At one end is the atrium, home to the famous Swarovski staircases .

The ship boasts a spacious rooftop pool deck and a tiered aft sundeck. Key attractions like waterslides, a ropes course, and top-deck waterpark are all popular spots when the weather is favorable. Should that not be the case, there is sheltered seating on the main pool deck.

MSC Euribia features a main pool deck with a large screen. An adjacent indoor pool with retractable ... [+] roof gives flexibility.

Inside, the fun keeps going with a covered swimming pool, more hot tubs, a sports court and a vast arcade. Kids clubs are available for various age groups, giving parents a few hours of peace especially on sea days.

Evening entertainment includes three seatings for the main show in the Delphi Theater, which is bookable using the ‘MSC for Me’ app. Although there is no theater bar, the ship’s 21 bars and lounges mean you’re never far from a drink, although be prepared to wait a while at busy times.

Secondary performance space the Carousel Lounge hosts big band concerts in a more informal atmosphere. The flexible space functions as an additional observation lounge during the day, with snacks and full bar service available.

MSC Euribia's Carousel Lounge is an observation lounge by day and a secondary performance space by ... [+] night.

As with all cruise ships, the casino is only open when at sea, and as a welcome plus is entirely non-smoking. Smokers are nevertheless well catered for with several outdoor smoking areas around the ship.

Accommodation Options

The 2,419 cabins on Euribia offer a wide range of choice for guests, although the brown and beige color scheme won’t be to everyone’s taste.

The 755 interior cabins offer the best value, while duplex suites with balcony hot tubs are available for those seeking the most luxurious experience.

Balcony views can be worth the extra money on Norwegian fjords itineraries.

The high number of guests typically sailing on Euribia is one of two very good reasons to splurge on one of more than 1,000 balcony cabins. The other? Northern Europe itself, especially Norwegian fjords cruises .

Such cruises are partly about the ports, but just as much about the sailaway. Having a private space from which to enjoy the scenery is worthwhile. That being said, inside cabins on Euribia are spacious compared with industry standards, and offer the best value.

Inside cabins are an economical yet comfortable way of staying on MSC Euribia.

There is plenty of outdoor space on higher decks to enjoy the scenery, although you will struggle to find a window seat in popular lounges.

Varied Dining Venues

As a line firmly in the mass-market segment of the industry, MSC is not renowned for its food offering. Yet, steady improvement has been made in recent years.

Kaito sushi bar is a speciality restaurant on MSC Euribia.

The inclusive offerings are more than satisfactory, especially the seafood, and the ship’s breads and pasta, all made on board. Also produced on board is fresh mozzarella. More than 650 pounds of it is made—and eaten—every day.

Euribia’s buffet restaurant can be hit-and-miss and does get crowded at popular times, but at least one main dining room is also open for breakfast/brunch/lunch, depending on the day.

White corn tacos are among the menu items at MSC Euribia's Mexican-themed cantina.

Adding to the choice is a number of speciality restaurants, including French-themed Le Grill, Japanese grill, sushi bar, and a Mexican cantina. The latter, with authentic white corn tacos and a $20 all-you-can-eat option, is outstanding value.

Spa And Fitness

With the availability of delicious pizza almost 24/7, it’s wise to get familiar with the fitness offer on Euribia. A well-equipped fitness center with views is open from 6am, and the combined walking and jogging track on deck 16 is popular on sea days.

Part of the thermal suite on MSC Euribia.

The Aurea Spa features a thermal area, for which day passes or cruise-long passes are available. A variety of massages and treatments are available in private treatment rooms, while a nail and beauty salon, and a barber shop rounds out the offer.

Aside from the spa, a total of five swimming pools and several hot tubs are available throughout the ship.

The Yacht Club Experience

If the Vegas-style amenities and atmosphere appeal but you want some peace and quiet too, Euribia offers the MSC Yacht Club experience.

The Top Sail Lounge is an observation lounge and bar exclusively for Yacht Club guests on MSC ... [+] Euribia.

MSC’s take on the ‘ship-within-a-ship’ concept is an access-controlled area of the ship for 100 cabins with an exclusive restaurant, bar and lounge, and an outdoor deck with pool, bar and daytime buffet.

Situated at the front of the ship, both the outside deck and observation lounge offer some of the best views anywhere on Euribia .

Unlike other line’s premium offerings, Euribia’s Yacht Club features a range of accommodation, including interior cabins, giving guests a more budget-friendly way to accessing a premium experience.

The private terrace in MSC Euribia's Yacht Club features bar service, a daytime buffet, and a ... [+] private pool.

Guests staying in the Yacht Club pay substantially more, but have access to butler service, and a premium drinks package, among other perks.

A ‘Greener’ Ship

While cruising is anything but a sustainable activity, Euribia is powered by liquified natural gas (LNG), something which not all new cruise ships are.

Although still criticized by environmental campaigners, LNG is considered the ‘greenest’ fuel that’s available today at the scale required for cruise ships. LNG significantly reduces sulphur oxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions compared with traditional maritime fuels.

MSC also claims an advanced onboard wastewater treatment system, energy efficiency through smart HVAC systems, and the ongoing ocean conservation work of the MSC Foundation .

Euribia isn’t for everyone, but what cruise ship is? If you enjoy a lively atmosphere, a packed program of activities, and a healthy dose of Vegas-style sparkle and glamor, Euribia could be for you.

Orcas sink sailing yacht in Strait of Gibraltar

The Rock of Gibraltar is seen from a ferry in the Strait of Gibraltar

An unknown number of orcas have sunk a sailing yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service said on Monday, a new attack in what has become a trend in the past four years.

The vessel Alboran Cognac, which measured 15 metres (49 feet) in length and carried two people, encountered the highly social apex predators, also known as killer whales, at 9 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) on Sunday, the service said.

The passengers reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before water started seeping into the ship. After alerting the rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and transported them to Gibraltar.

The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank.

The incident is the latest example of  recurring orca rammings  around the Gibraltar Strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and northwestern Spain.

Experts believe them to involve a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the designation “Gladis.”

According to the research group GTOA, which tracks populations of the Iberian orca sub-species, there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the region were first reported in May 2020.Researchers are unsure about the causes for the behaviour, with leading theories including it being a playful manifestation of the mammals’ curiosity, a social fad or the intentional targeting of what they perceive as competitors for their favourite prey, the local bluefin tuna.

Although known as killer whales, endangered orcas are part of the dolphin family. They can measure up to eight metres and weigh up to six tonnes as adults.
